- Sam investigates a case about missing babies whose parents are being murdered. At one of the crime scenes, he discovers a baby that was left behind and calls Dean for help. Reluctant to leave Lisa and Ben, Dean finally agrees to meet Sam and surprises his brother with how parental he has become. The brothers take the baby to Samuel, who decides to raise it as a hunter, which infuriates Dean. However, before they can decide the baby's future, a shape-shifter breaks in and attempts to kidnap the baby.—CW Publicity
- The scene opens with a shot of a roaring fire in a nicely appointed home. On the mantle, photos of a happy couple holding their infant. A bloody hand smashes into the glass of one of them.
It's the wife, holding the baby and running upstairs. She locks herself and her baby in a bedroom and slides under the bed, holding her hand over her infant's mouth to muffle the baby's cries. She's forced to stifle her own when she notices her husband's bloody body in a corner.
Under the crack in the door, she sees the shadow of feet stop for a moment, then walk away. She quietly breathes a sigh of relief. Hands pull her from under the bed and she screams, leaving her baby behind.
Cut to a scene during the day, in a rented house. Dean (Jensen Ackles) is in the garage inspecting the weapons cache in the trunk of the Metallicar. He pulls out his sawed-off and considers it for a moment, then replaces it and closes the trunk. He grabs a box marked "kitchen" and heads into the house.
Lisa (Cindy Sampson) and Ben (Nicholas Elia) are unpacking. Ben is sulking. He wants to go outside to check out the neighborhood, but Lisa and Dean keep inside, promising to take him out for lunch later.
But later comes, and Dean orders pizza, much to Lisa and Ben's dismay. Dean looks upset with himself.
Lansing, Michigan
Sam (Jared Padalecki), dressed as an FBI agent, shows up at the scene of the double homicide. The baby is missing, one of many such disappearances. He calls Samuel to tell him doesn't think that it's a supernatural case, but then he notices that the home happens to be guarded by a specific security firm. He points out that the cops said the alarm never went off. He asks Samuel to see if there's a connection and, indeed, there is another couple that fits the profile. They're still alive and they have a six-month-old baby.
Back at Lisa and Dean's new place, Dean catches Ben playing with the sawed-off and yells at him, sending him up to his room. Lisa comes in later and asks what happened, and Dean tells her that he caught Ben playing with his tools. Lisa doesn't buy it and asks Dean to talk about why he's yelling at Ben and keeping them in the house. Not just that, but she's wondering why Dean made them move. She tells Dean she knows he's trying to protect them, but admits he's also scaring her.
In Lansing, after dark, Sam pulls up to the house of the couple Samuel (Mitch Pileggi) reported to still be alive, and goes inside...but he's too late. During a deeper search of the house, he encounters a security guard who attacks him. Sam stabs him with his knife, at the guard's wound smokes and burns. He runs away. Sam continues his search and finds a changing table. And underneath the changing table?...
Dean's phone rings. It's Sam, telling him that he needs his help. He asks Dean to meet him and reluctantly, he does. "Where is it?" Dean asks Sam. Sam directs him to the back seat.
Dean looks inside and is instantly horrified. For what he sees there is... a baby.
"Welcome to the party, Guttenberg," Sam quips.
Dean heads back home to tell Lisa he's going to be gone for a couple of days, and makes sure she knows how to load the gun. Dean tells Lisa he's reluctant to go, but she sends him off. "Just be careful, OK?" she tells him, and they kiss goodbye. Dean heads to Sam's car to get the details on the Big Bad -- he's fast and doesn't react well. They narrow it down: shifter, ghoul, zombie. Dean gets into the car and tells him they need supplies. Sam says he has an arsenal in the trunk.
"Not that kind," Dean says.
They head to the grocery store and pick up diapers (with an African-American baby on the wrapper...which comes into play later...) diaper rash cream and other things. When the baby starts to cry in the checkout line, Dean can't stop him. An elderly woman (BJ Harrison) comes up and kindly offers to help, saying she'll change the kid's diaper. At first it seems very sweet until Dean notices her in the security camera footage: her eyes glow, like a shifter's. Dean politely declines her offer. When she insists with the baby in her arms, Dean tells her to hand it over before he stabs her in the neck.
The woman takes off with Dean and Sam in pursuit. Sam cuts her off and grabs the kid. When Dean tackles her she cries out, drawing the attention of the store security guard. Dean runs out and jumps into Sam's car, and they take off. They still don't understand what a shifter wants with the kid.
But the shifter watched them go, and kills a cop, taking on his appearance before running Sam's plates.
Sam and Dean check into a motel. Dean hums the baby "Smoke on the Water" to get him to go to sleep. Sam is amazed Dean has paternal instincts. Dean shares that he thinks of Ben as his own. He admits to Sam that after they way they grew up, he wants to do something different with Ben. Sam isn't so sure. He points out he knows Dean cares about Lisa and Ben, but also says they have them on lockdown...just like their dad used to do to them. Sam warns him against turning into their father.
Sam looks of the case files and notices a case where the mother was killed, the baby was kidnapped...but the father is still alive because he wasn't in the house. Sam goes to interview the man as Dean stays with the kid.
Sam, again playing an FBI agent, talks to the man. He says his wife cheated on him, and explained it had been a while then, wham, his wife was pregnant. He says his wife said it was his, that it happened when he was supposed to be out of town, but that he came back early and that's when she got pregnant. The man insists he never came back, but whoever the guy was who slept with his wife during that episode is the kid's real father.
While Sam is interviewing the man, Dean is lying down for a nap when there's a wet exploding sound. Dean peers into the crib to see a bloody, slimy mess on the wall above the crib. He finds the formerly white baby is now the African-American baby on the diaper package.
Sam calls at that moment. He tells Dean the shapeshifter who attacked them is the father.
"Oh, ya think?" Dean wisecracks.
The baby's crying. Dean finishes cleaning him up as there's a knock on the door. A voice on the other side claims to be the motel manager, telling Dean the baby's cries are disturbing the guests. He asks Dean to open the door. Dean politely declines. The doorknob starts twisting. Dean realizes the man is trying to get into the room. He puts the baby in the crib and stands on the side of the doorjamb as the intruder picks the lock and comes in.
Dean grabs him. They start to fight. The intruder -- the shifter, still looking like a cop (Jackson Berlin) -- tells Dean to hand over the baby, saying he should be with his father. Dean refuses. he shifter insists, "I'm not just talking about me. I'm talking about our father."
The shifter is strong and overpowers Dean. Before he can kill him, Sam comes up from behind the guy with his gun and blows him away. The men decide it's time for an express checkout.
Dean can't figure out what to do with the baby. and Sam tells him that he's going to take the kid to Samuel. Dean isn't smitten with the idea, but they head to Samuel's compound anyway.
At the compound, Grandpa Samuel and the cousins chat about it, and Samuel decides they're going to keep the kid and raise it as a hunter. The idea upsets Dean. Samuel hands the baby off to Christian (Corin Nemec), pointing out he and his wife haven't had any luck on the baby front.
"You guys are joking, right? I mean, c'mon...you can't Angelina Jolie a shapeshifter," Dean says.
Dean opines the Campbells have no business raising anything, and he doesn't trust them, but before they can have a conflict about it, the dogs outside start barking, indicating the compound has been breached. Sam and Dean take the baby downstairs to the compound's panic room.
The Campbells pick up their guns and aim them at the front door. After a pause, the door opens and in walks...another Samuel Campbell. He smiles and informs the room they have something that belongs to him.
The Campbells try to engage the shapeshifter, but it's incredibly strong -- so strong, in fact, that when Gwen (Jessica Heafey) shoots him twice with a shotgun, it shakes off the blasts. The thing grabs Mark (David Paetkau), the quiet one, and breaks his neck. He moves to do the same to Gwen, but Christian and Samuel plug him with tranquilizer darts. At first, the beast releases Gwen and starts to go down with the tranquilizers, but just as quickly he shakes it off, forcing the darts to fly back out of him.
Downstairs, Sam and Dean are holding the baby inside the tank when suddenly another Sam appears outside of the door. It rips the door off of its hinges and knocks Sam aside like a ragdoll. It turns its gaze to Dean and, turning into him before his eyes -- and without shedding its skin -- steps up to Dean and grabs him by the throat with one hand, taking the infant with the other. He holds Dean by the throat until he drops, nearly unconscious, then calmly leaves with the child.
Sam and Dean head back upstairs and Samuel observes he's "pretty sure it's not a myth now."
Dean, irked by this, asks what Samuel's talking about, and Samuel reveals they just encountered the alpha shapeshifter, the one who spawned all the others.
As Sam and Dean are heading back to the car, he points out to Sam the shifter back at the motel mentioned the alpha, and wonders if Sam overheard him. Because if he did, that means Sam brought the baby to Samuel's compound to use it as bait. Sam insists that's not the case, but Dean doesn't believe him. He doesn't press the issue, though, and they get into Sam's car.
Later, Samuel is on the phone with an unknown person, reporting what happened. He says he's not sure if they can find a way to catch it, but they'll try. He sarcastically tells the person they'll bring it to him, gift-wrapped.
Dean gets home just as Lisa is drying the dishes. He tells her he doesn't know what's best for them, staying with them to protect them or getting as far away from them as possible. He doesn't want to turn into his dad.
Lisa responds she doesn't know whether she and Ben are safer with him there or gone, but the one thing she knows is he's not a construction worker. He's a hunter. And with Sam back, things have changed.
So she proposes he go. But she's not breaking up with him.
"If there's some rule this all has to be either or, how about we break it?" she says.
"Me and Ben will be here, and you come when you can. Just come in one piece."
"You really think we can pull something like that off?" Dean asks her.
"It's worth a shot," she says.
Cut to Dean, his old jacket on, and the tarp off the Metallicar. The car's finish gleams, and Dean grins confidently.
