She has come back to Earth to tells Clark that Jor-El has sent her to take care of the evil that is coming. Jor-El is sure that the doubt in Clark's heart will allow the dark force to possess him and use Clark's powers as the ultimate weapon. Clark is reluctant to give up on what he views as his own mission. In an attempt to push himself further along, he asks Kara to give him flying lessons. He tries to launch himself from the top of the windmill. It works momentarily, until he then plummets to the ground through the barn roof. Lois learns that Godfrey is planning to reveal Green Arrow's identity online when he posts the final chapter of his book. This will create doubt all over the world about the super-heroes so that he can manipulate them down a new path. Clark and Kara confront Godfrey at a seedy nightclub. Kara's Kryptonian bracelet exorcises the entity from Godfrey. Lois rushes to tell Oliver about the big reveal that is scheduled. It is unnecessary. They embrace and then she notes that he was the one who said she should take the job in Africa. Lois then mentions Clark's new partner, Cat, but Clark notes that there's only one Lois Lane. He wonders where Cat is, and Lois explains that she convinced the editor to send Cat to Alaska on a story. Meanwhile, Godfrey rants about faceless mutants skulking in the shadows, serving a secret agenda. Lois assures Clark that the Blur no doubt knows that Godfrey isn't anything significant. Godfrey turns to the Blur, and describes him as a disfigured vigilante. Lois takes offense and marches onto the screen, as Godfrey unveils a billboard. It starts to topple and Clark moves to catch it at superspeed... only to discover that his cousin, Kara, is wearing a red-and-blue costume has already caught it. She smiles as the crowd cheers, and then flies away.
Back at the Daily Planet, the newspaper is publishing stories about the new "Maid of Might." Lois notes that Kara must have obtained superpowers from meteor rock, and Clark admits that she never told him she had powers. However, he points out that she won over the crowd when she showed her face publicly, and wonders if the Blur should go public. Lois insists that the Blur is right, and Kara is putting herself and Clark in danger. When Clark wonders why Lois would be so concerned about him, she hastily revises her statement, but warns that the public will soon turn against Kara.
Kara is participating in a photo shoot when Clark comes to see her. She tells him that she's there for him, but Clark doesn't understand why she's doing something that isn't a favor. Kara says that they are the last survivors of the House of El, and she had to come back to the one place where she had family. Clark tells her that he's chosen to live privately, and asks her for a straight answer. In response, Kara tells her that she is on a mission from Jor-El, and that he has let Clark go because he no longer considers him his son.
Lois approaches Godfrey at a church and warns him that she won't tolerate him taking potshots at Metropolis' heroes. He insists that Kara risked people's lives and he has people investigating her and the other heroes. Lois suggests he might have something to hide, but Godfrey insists that he has nothing to hide. However, he warns that one of his connections has learned that Oliver is Green Arrow, and Godfrey plans to announce it in the publication of the last chapter of his new book.
Oliver is at his office at LutherCorp, exercising and remembering his time with Chloe. He angrily smashes a board as Lois comes in, and she insists that she doesn't know how she might affect Clark. However, she's there to warn Oliver that Godfrey knows his secret identity. Oliver suggests they ignore him, but Lois warns that Godfrey has evidence. He suggests that people might deserve to know the truth, and the cost of keeping his secret is too high. Lois says that if he isn't going to go after Godfrey, she will.
Godfrey meets with his publicist, and he explains that he has the only copy of his last chapter on a flash drive. He refuses to let her see it, and tells her that he needs her to put him on every television, computer, and newspaper so he can spread a seed of doubt across the world, devouring their faith in each other and in heroes. Then they'll be ready for someone to lead them on another path. His publicist suggests he take a break and then leaves. Once she's gone, Godfrey contemplates a brochure for a fetish club, Club DeSaad, and tells his driver to take him there. He's unaware that Lois has taken his driver's place.
Clark goes to the barn to get the teleportation key to the Fortress, but Kara already has it. She explains that Jor-El has warned of a spreading darkness, and that she is showing herself to draw it to her. Clark insists that he knows what he's doing, but Kara warns that the coming evil takes advantage of people's doubts. She points out that he still doesn't have control of his ability to fly, and he'll need all of his abilities. Clark asks if she trusts Jor-El more than him, and reminds her that they're family.
Kara takes Clark to the windmill and tries to show him how to fly. Clark tries to relax and embrace the moment, but is overwhelmed by everything he can hear. She tells him to focus on a butterfly, and live inside that one noise. Clark concentrates and then flies into the air... for a moment. He comes down hard inside of the barn, and Kara admits that at least it's a start. However, she admits she was wrong to go against Jor-El's wishes, and warns that Clark is too distracted to fly, much less fight the darkness. When she says that the darkness entered the universe three weeks ago, Clark realizes how it came there. They go to the church where the Kandorian device is hidden, and Clark explains that he used the Book of Rao to open a portal. He suggests that perhaps the darkness can leave through a similar gateway. Kara prepares her bracelet, which can open gateways, and explains that the darkness can seize upon a single doubt and possess is victim. However, it can't possess someone with total clarify of purpose. She warns that if possesses Clark, it could become the greatest weapon ever seen.

She then takes photos of him, and Godfrey asks what she has planned next. Lois sends the two girls out and then reveals who she really is. When she tells him she's going to publish the photos in the paper, Godfrey points out that she'll sacrifice anyone for a story, and offers to give her the evidence against Oliver so she can get a headline. Lois refuses and transmits the photos to the newspaper. Godfrey speaks in a darker voice and breaks himself free, and then realizes that Lois is pure of heart. Lois grabs a stun gun but Godfrey easily subdues her, his eyes turned black.

Clark and Kara track Lois' cell phone, enter the club, and split up to search for Lois. Clark finds Godfrey in the back, and Godfrey warns that Lois is in over her head and has served her purpose. Now Godfrey has a vigilante, and asks Clark if he think she can win against him. Godfrey talks of the doubt in Clark's heart and warns that when people stop believing in him, he'll shatter. He warns Clark that he's afraid he'll never be the hero he wants to be, and that he wants to kill. Clark insists he won't help him, but Godfrey warns that he'll never have a choice. The dark force emerges from Godfrey and approaches Clark, but Kara arrives and uses her bracelet to drive it away. When she asks Clark if he's alright, he notes that the dark force could see inside him. He then hears Lois and rescues her. Clark quickly leaves and Kara makes sure that Lois is all right.

Lois wonders if it's easier to be a hero when there is no one to tie her down, but Kara reminds her that even heroes need someone to come home to.
Later, Lois meets Clark at the planet and shows him the Godfrey photo, which she got published in the Inquisitor. Clark warns that she shouldn't have put herself at risk, but Lois explains that she was afraid of living in a world without heroes. As she tries to come up with a heroic name for Kara, Clark warns her that putting heroes up on a pedestal could lead to disappointment. Lois tells him that the Blur is a hero, and will always be there for her.
As Clark leaves, he bumps into a brunette... and realizes that it's Kara in disguise. She admits that Clark was right about avoiding attention, and says that she will be staying until the darkness is defeated. Kara explains that the bracelet can only banish the dark spirit if it's in a host, and that she has doubts of her own. Clark worries about failure, and Kara tells him that he will have to learn to overcome it. She asks him to leave the darkness to her and then goes, while Clark wonders if the Blur isn't the hero he claims to be.
Lois gives the flash drive with the evidence to Oliver, and explains that she stole it from him at the club. However, Oliver tells her that he can't have the people he loves fighting his battles for him, and explains that Chloe left and isn't coming back. Lois insists that Chloe will be back, and Oliver says that things have gone on long enough and it's time to do what he has to. He then calls in the press and announces that he is Green Arrow.
