The Fringe Division investigates the case that is classified since The Secretary does not want that the population learns that the family and friends are alive enclosed in amber. Olivia interviews Matthew, who is the twin brother of Joshua, and suspects that he is lying. Meanwhile The Secretary lures Olivia and convinces her to be submitted to n experiment while she has daydreams with Peter.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- The alternate universe Fringe Division investigates a shocking breach of security when a twin frees his brother from a quarantined Amber area. As the team sets out to crack this sophisticated case, Walternate experiments over there more with Olivia as she reenters the tank. Meanwhile, visions of Peter continue to haunt Olivia about returning to the "other side."—Fox Publicity
- Brandon the lab nerd examines Olivia (Anna Torv). Walternate (John Noble) checks on her, telling her the other Olivia could cross between universes. He tells her they think she might be able to do the same. He wants to put her through some experiments.
Later, Olivia pops a pill and opens her locker. Peter the Hallucination (Joshua Jackson) starts talking to her, telling her she's not their Olivia. "I'm not a lingering symptom, you can't ignore me," Peter tells her.
Brooklyn, New York Two men saw through an amber quarantine, removing a chunk. They laser away at it. It's a Han Solo-frozen-in-carbonite situation. They find a man, one of the man's twin, inside. He's not breathing. They inject him and shock him, but he doesn't breathe. The quarantine alarms go off. The man sputters to life. We see the other people trapped in amber. A vapor starts creeping and the twin's partner is caught up in it. The twin takes his resuscitated brother and leaves his partner to become trapped in the amber.
The Fringe team hits the scene. Lincoln (Seth Gabel) is almost completely healed from his burn. Olivia is late again. They watch a video on the amber quarantine and Charlie (Kirk Acevedo) notices the amber in the video is different than what they're in front of. They ID Mark Willner, a petty crook and find the amber shell which was around the twin.
Walternate tells Broyles (Lance Reddick) about using amber for the first time in 1989. More than 100 civilians have been trapped in amber since. Walternate says the quarantine victims can be removed and resuscitated, but removing them weakens the structural integrity of the amber. He doesn't want that getting out.
In the lab, they make a plaster mold of the amber cast and find he's Joshua Rose (Shawn Ashmore), a bank robber. He used a device that disabled bank alarms but also made unstable areas, leading to quarantines everywhere he robbed.
The location hit today was near his last job. Broyles tells the team about the people in amber being in suspended animation.
Josh is tended to by his brother, or maybe vice versa. He's not conscious.
Charlie tells Olivia his first partner got caught in an amber quarantine in Boston. They visit Josh's locked up apartment. Peter the Hallucination joins Olivia. Lincoln mentions Josh's brother Matthew (Aaron Ashmore).
They find a hidden room with lasers and drills. Lincoln thinks it could have been used to create a device that would allow him to walk through walls.
Olivia hears a quiet throbbing noise. They run and make it out the front door just as the apartment explodes.
Back at Fringe Division, Charlie tells Broyles that Olivia heard the bomb and saved them. They're all knicked up with shrapnel. When she's left alone, Olivia goes pill seeking and swipes a bottle.
Lincoln and Olivia go to see Matt Rose -- the twin who rescued Josh. He says Josh wouldn't contact him because he blamed Josh for people getting trapped in amber.
Olivia gets beeped to come for her tests.
With Olivia and Lincoln gone, Matt checks on Josh. Except we learn it's vice versa. Matt came to stop Josh from robbing the bank and got trapped and Josh ended up with his life. Matt's wife, Danielle (Holly Elissa), comes to see him. They have a tearful reunion.
Back in the lab, Walternate puts Olivia in the sensory deprivation tank and tells her they're putting her on psychotropic drugs to help free her mind for cross-universe travel.
She bobs in the water, breathing through a scuba mask. They pump her full of drugs. After four and a half hours, nothing has happened, so Walternate calls for more drugs.
In the tank, Olivia goes critical and starts thrashing around.
Suddenly, she's outside the tank, dripping wet in a gift store.
Walternate takes her out of the tank and she reports where she went. It worked.
Back home alone, Peter the Hallucination asks her if she understands now why they needed her to do their test voluntarily -- they knew she could cross over.
Olivia's mom drops by. Olivia starts to tell her mom she's tired when Peter pops up with the story of twins she knew in high school and one was smart but they both got straight As.
She has an epiphany and goes to work where she tells Broyles that Josh took Matt's place. When they questioned him, he seemed ashamed.
Cut to Lincoln taking photos of Matt's eyes. The scan shows it's really Matt. Olivia thinks they switched again and says she'll prove it.
She goes in to talk to Matt and asks what they talked about at his house yesterday. Matt accurately recounts what they said. Olivia is sure Josh filled him in, but Broyles calls her into the hall. He says they can't hold him on a hunch.
Olivia's mom comes to see Broyles, saying Olivia hasn't been herself.
Lincoln finds evidence. A chemical Josh used to use was stolen from a lab two weeks ago. Olivia presents it to Broyles, who tells her to go home.
Matt leaves and calls his brother, saying they know.
Back home, Danielle relays to Josh that Matt told her he was conscious the whole time he was in amber. She tells Josh he should turn himself in.
At Fringe, Olivia asks Astrid (Jasika Nicole) to run some probability scenarios. She asks for targets with less human collateral. Astrid comes up with three.
Cut to Josh firing up a device underground.
Olivia walks up to a bank and goes down into the subway next to it. She sees the lock on it is broken. Josh has a ring stuck to the wall and the wall material vibrates and disappears.
Olivia comes down and sees it, but not Josh. He tasers her.
At Fringe Division, they get a breach warning. Astrid tells Broyles that Olivia was right.
Matt comes down in the tunnel and checks on unconscious Olivia. The Fringe team arrives and sets up a quarantine perimeter.
Matt finds Josh in the vault. Lincoln and Charlie get Olivia from the tunnel. Matt realizes Josh didn't bring his tools. Josh explains they'll never stop looking for him. Josh tells his brother to leave then trips the alarm so the gate slams shut. "Let me do this one good thing," Josh says. Matt runs.
Later, the Fringe team reports the quarantine is secure and Josh was the only casualty. Broyles tells Olivia she broke protocol, but good job.
Olivia visits Matt and tells him they found Josh. She shakes his hand then asks him what the skin sample she took would show. Instead, she tells him he can consider the investigation closed.
Peter joins her, saying she let him go because she understood what being trapped is like. Olivia finally starts talking to Peter, saying he has no proof. She says he knows things, which he points out means that she does, too.
Peter recaps the things she knows about the other side about her family, like her niece Ella is alive and it's her birthday, and the fact the twin towers have been destroyed. Olivia says there's no way to prove it. Peter says there is, then disappears.
Cut to Olivia going to the lab and telling Brandon the lab nerd she wants to go back in the tank.
When Walternate arrives, Brandon tells him about a synthetic compound in her brain. Olivia goes critical and is back dripping wet in the gift shop. She sees a postcard for remembering the Twin Towers and looks at the skyline and sees they're gone.
She picks up a phone and dials. Ella answers, pleased Olivia remembered her birthday.
Olivia is whooshed back to the other side, where Walternate is waiting. She tells him it didn't work -- all she saw was black.
