Damon's flashback hair still unintentionally amuses me. It's so floppy and all over the place, it's hysterical.
I really liked the way they cut the opening scene together, with Stefan and Katherine dancing in flashback, then Stefan seeing Elena and him walking through the white door o' light into the present, where Elena and Damon were apparently happy together. The look on Stefan's face said it all (nice display of emotion there, Paul). Was this a glimpse of what Elena/Damon might be like as a couple at some point in the future? Maybe, though probably not for quite some time. I also liked seeing Past Katherine looking so out of place in the present and how the two time periods crossed over/meshed. Then came the real shocker, of Stefan waking from his dream to Elena at his side in bed, only to realise a moment later it was in fact Katherine (reminded me of Darla pulling the same trick on Angel in his show). Maybe he was drunk from sleep and the horrid visual of seeing Elena and Damon smooching, but it took him longer this time to realize it was Katherine and not Elena. Maybe he was subconsciously enjoying being so close to Katherine? He obviously did love her at one point, even if he adamantly denies it and blames it all on Katherine compelling him.
I always enjoy Katherine showing Stefan who's boss, so her shoving him to the floor and "We both know I could rip you to shreds and do my nails at the same time." line were good.
For someone who does unforgivable things on a regular basis, Damon sure took Elena's rejection of him last episode personally. He can dish it out, but he can't take it. Stabbing you in the back, Damon? Least she doesn't do it *literally*. And, as Elena said, she tricked you into telling her the truth/used your own tactics against you. I think she was at least partially justified in doing so.
Tyler actually made a good point to his uncle (about him blowing into town with a supernatural secret and him expecting Tyler not to ask questions). All things considered, I think Tyler reacted pretty reasonably to learning his uncle's a werewolf and the possibility that he himself may be one too.
I liked Katherine's lines (in reference to werewolves) "I know not to pat one." and "They mainly exist now in books and really bad movies." (it's true, the number of *good* werewolf movies can be counted on one hand). Nice acting job, Stefan, with your "What is it about you that makes me still care?" line to Katherine and smooching her right before (literally!) stabbing her in the back with the Vervain syringe. She got to spend some quality time in the same room as both Damon and Stefan himself had before her. Stefan got his Jack Bauer on with the Vervain-to-the-face torture trick.
Enjoyed all of the interaction between Damon, Mason, Jenna and Alaric at Jenna's so-called BBQ. Highlights...
Mason saying he'd heard great things about Damon, to which Damon replied "Really? That's weird. Because I'm a dick.".
Damon's 'Dances with Wolves' drawing (he's no artist), Caroline's "Puppy! Puppy! Puppy with a tutu!" guess and Jenna's disbelieving "HOW is that a wolf?!" line.
Damon's "Aunt Jenna is getting tipsy." line.
Damon's wolf 'jokes' wore a bit thin after a while, but least Mason got him back with that "ladykiller" dig.
Really didn't like the way Caroline acted this episode towards Elena, but I guess she didn't have much choice, since it was revealed towards the end she was doing Katherine's bidding because Katherine threatened her. Still, Caroline was a bit difficult to like this episode.
While I think Stefan was pretty truthful when he told Katherine that he just gets to be himself around Elena, I think there's still a part of him when he's around her which is a front. We've seen him let loose previously, and I think he was more relaxed around Lexi (*sniff*) and even Caroline - since they were both vampires, whereas with Elena he does have to keep himself in check on occasion.
Poor Damon, being rejected by Katherine (and having her choose Stefan over him) even in the early days.
Was interesting seeing Stefan get so mad at Katherine for setting up all her vampire "friends" to be burned in the church.
I liked seeing those flashback scenes from Season 1 tied into the flashbacks of this episode.
Finally! Elena and Katherine came face to face...or rather more 'boob to face' (given how it looked like Elena was thrusting her chest out at Katherine when she got up close). I actually think Elena was asking the RIGHT questions ("How do we look exactly alike?"), despite Katherine telling her otherwise. Damn the cryptic crap and not just giving a straight answer to Elena.
I personally thought the fake break up between Elena and Stefan was well played by the show. So much so that I was actually surprised to see Stefan revealed behind Elena when she got back home, after publicly 'breaking up' with him for Caroline and Katherine's (and Damon's) benefit. Good on Elena for realising that Caroline wasn't acting normal. Smart Elena's always a good thing. I'm glad both she and Stefan figured out that Katherine was behind the way Caroline was acting.
That was a pretty effective flashback scene, of Katherine looking back at the bodies of Stefan and Damon. All these flashbacks are awesomely shot, but that one in particular was kinda creepy.
I also like how Season 2 has gotten into the habit of having 'The Vampire Diaries' at the end appearing while we're still seeing stuff on screen and not waiting until the screen goes black first.
The absence of Bonnie, Jeremy and Matt this episode was appreciated.
