- Vidal Sassoon is more than just a hairdresser-he's a rock star, an artist, a craftsman who "changed the world with a pair of scissors." With the geometric, Bauhaus-inspired hairdos he pioneered in the 1960s and his "wash and wear" philosophy that liberated generations of women from the tyranny of the salon, Sassoon revolutionized the art of hairstyling and left an indelible mark on popular culture. This documentary traces with visual gusto the life of a self-made man whose passion and perseverance took him from a Jewish orphanage in London to the absolute pinnacle of his craft.—Tribeca Film Festival
- Set against a literal and figurative backdrop of storyboards for a book on him, the life of Vidal Sassoon is presented, he arguably the most well-known hair stylist of all time. This documentary largely focuses on his career, including the unlikely path to his prominence in the business growing up in an orphanage where he was placed by his mother who could not afford to look after him herself. When entering into the business, he, who did not go onto higher education, was influenced by architecture, and knew that he wanted to take hair styling in a revolutionary direction, which he was able to do in the 1960s, especially with what is known as the five-point cut, which allowed women of all socioeconomic backgrounds to have a hairstyle that is known today as wash and wear. That five-point cut today is seen as synonymous with the mod look associated with the miniskirt which came simultaneously. Wanting to have influence in the business when he wasn't styling hair, he embarked on a line of mass market hair care products with a salon pedigree, which further led to celebrity status in other areas of media. Other areas of his life are also presented, including his love of soccer, the large amount of his focus on keeping fit, his philanthropy and activism which may have been spurred by being Jewish and taking steps against the anti-Semitic sentiment of the time, three of his marriages, the most high profile being that to his business partner at the time, actress Beverly Adams, and his family life.—Huggo
