Shawn repeatedly says "oh my god" to his dad after learning that his dad got kicked out of Prescott's class. Shawn then says "One more, Chandler Bing style." Matt Perry, who played Chandler Bing on Friends, was offered the role of Shawn Spencer, and James Roday Rodriguez had to wait after accepting the role to see if Perry would respond with a yes, which he did not.
In the scene where Shawn is hanging upside down, he mentions that Lance had a "Super Troopers" pinball machine. This episode is directed by Jay Chandrasekhar who directed, co-wrote, and co-starred in "Super Troopers".
Shawn refers to Prescott as "Santa Barbara's biggest dirty rotten scoundrel." Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988) is a film about two conmen - a gentleman and a crass grifter - who make their respective livings seducing wealthy widows and conning them out of their fortunes.
Shawn makes his first appearance as "Soup Can Sam"
As Lassiter and O'Hara are questioning Gillian Tucker, Lassiter puts his leg up on his chair and asks "Ms. Tucker, are you trying to seduce me?", the camera aimed under his leg at her. This is a nod to the similar line and camera angle made famous in the film "The Graduate" (1967).
