Jim Longworth has transferred to Southern Florida to escape the harsh Chicago winters. He has found the perfect spot in the sleepy town, but little does he know that crime is everywhere, even in the peaceful setting of the fictional Palm Glade, where he wanted to live, work, and relax, playing a lot of golf and enjoying the beaches.

As the story begins, we watch a young couple sleeping in a vehicle. Justin, and a friend, Erin, have come to the side of a swamp within the Everglades. When he wakes up, he discovers an object floating in the water. To his complete amazement, it is the headless body of a woman. Jim, who has been on the golf court, is summoned to go to the scene of the crime.

The investigation of this case sends Longworth to the place where the body is found. As he tries to get something from the water, he is bitten by what he thinks is an alligator. That sends him to the local hospital, where he is treated by Callie, a nurse, with whom Jim seems to enjoy meeting, even when she had to give him a tetanus shot. On further investigation Justin and Erin are questioned again. Jim finds a connection between the girl and the dead brother of Justin.

Some signs have been appearing all over town with a strange message about a teacher. Erin has a lot to do with the obnoxious graffiti. Mike Ogletree, a police officer, comes into the picture when the evidence found inside a crocodile Jim killed in the swamp. Among the things they get out of the digestive system the medical examiner finds a human jaw. Mike has been acting in an erratic way. It is made clear his wife has not been seen in a while. Jim is able to put the pieces of the puzzle together in an unexpected finale.

The creators of this series, Clifton Campbell, places the action in a small town near the Everglades where surprisingly a lot of crime will take place in the upcoming season. Judging the opening episode, this is not going to be another CSI Miami, or a Dexter, or even a Miami Vice. The pilot introduces the characters that are likable, but our overall impression is that it plays as a sitcom with some crime on the side. Director Peter O'Fallon keeps things moving at a steady pace.

Matt Passmore, playing Jim Longworth, shows he has the makings of a good presence in the show. Kiele Sanchez is Callie, the nurse that becomes Jim's main interest, and Carlos Gomez, a medical examiner, doubles up as his golfing partner. John Carroll Lynch is a more familiar face in the cast, but alas, he was just a guest in this chapter.
