Duality, one of the most fascinating topic. With such an academic theme I thought the contestants would be inspired but all the pieces were just tasteless and boring.
Heaven or Hell. Mark and Peregrine were paired up and I was surprised how the first failed at delivering something beyond good and evil. I mean he's one of the dark horse of the show so I was expecting him to blow our mind, like Simon requested them to. But somehow the idea she chose to conduct their work sort of scared him and he wasn't able to show us his talent. In fact his piece was almost lazy and as for hers it was just a mess. And like the judges pointed it out it was far too literal. Life isn't just black and white. Instead they should have focused on all the shades of grey that compose it. Otherwise we have to consider how short their planning phase is, only thirty minutes long. I mean it's probably the time it takes me to scratch my head. How can you get things done in such a short notice ?
Male and Female. Miles manipulating Jaclyn was hilarious but I can't believe she was that naive. I mean she's obviously competing to both show off her slim body and skills as an artist but I can't help question her authenticity. Doesn't she already know that men are sharks ? But I suppose it's really hard, nearly impossible, to be yourself on TV. She can be so superficial at times but in some challenges she proved herself as a valuable talent. As for their work it was a complete disaster, despite what some of the judges said to save the appearances. The guest was so right about the lack of cohesiveness. Miles boredom on one side, Jaclyn shy piece on the other. Seriously how can you pretend to be in control where you're doing such a thing ? Isn't it a lot about losing it ? And what's with the awkward position ? Free your mind to better let the libido flow in your body. Sex is definitely an ambivalent thematic. But I can only applaud Miles for his arguments to sell his work to the judges. He really knows how to explain it and find the right words to describe it. However I just don't like his work because it doesn't make me feel anything. He would make a great carpenter but as an artist, he makes me fall asleep.
Order and Chaos, Dr Nicole & Mr Abdi. I thought these two would mesmerize us but like the others their pieces ended pretty badly. The first concept was interesting and quite modern as it was an interactive wood machinery but its execution was rushed and the idea behind it very obscure. Society ? An opening mouth ? It just didn't make sense and one of the judges almost broke it while activating its wheel. As for our friend Abdi he struggled again to deliver. I think he's just tired, like Ryan was in the previous challenge. I mean how can you be at your best with so few sleep and pressure on your shoulders ? But still I had high hopes for him to succeed at the beginning when he decided to go for a sculpture. Indeed that's how he won some challenges so I was surprised when he changed his mind and decided to go for a flat painting. I mean what's more three dimensional than chaos ? From fractals to twisted structures there were plenty of solutions to picture the dark side of the order. Moreover like with Miles and Jaclyn their pieces had no connection.
Last but not least I think Abdi's question wasn't so bad. Indeed asking for feedback from your peers, specially more experienced artists, is a wise move when you're stuck. When you can't find the resources within, gather them in your environment. You would have to be quite arrogant to think you have all the answers. Moreover getting some help from other people doesn't mean you won't be able to express your talent nor provide them with fresh and creative ideas. As often it's a question of compromise and by blocking Abdi's request I think the judges made a selfish and unwise decision. Haven't they heard of collaborative projects and the Web 2.0 revolution yet ?
