Martin smells a drop following Joey's poisoning, and assumes that the miscreant will return to see if his plot to poison Martin has paid off or not. Martin sets a trap, and is left in no uncertain terms that he is definitely a marked man. On the run, Martin goes through dangerous and uncomfortable experiences in order to meet with Doctor Dowdall, who he believes can shed more light on the events of the Caistor. Francis Main is pushed aside by his superior over his recent actions, but Main has ideas above his station.
