Interesting but Missing Details
thalassafischer21 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know what it is about this documentary but it almost seems like they were downplaying the extreme violence of Paul Bernardo's behavior. They do mention early on that his rapes of young girls on the streets of Toronto at night went unnoticed for years, likely due to his clean cut appearance, boyish baby face, and charmingly psychopathic personality. They also indicate that he would press their faces or body parts into the dirt to humiliate them, insert objects other than his own genitals or fingers into the victims, and that he broke one girl's arm by stepping on it. Yes, it's all very shocking.

But aside from that litany of terror, there's SO MUCH EMPHASIS of repetitively showing video clips of how cute and normal the couple seemed to other people for about six years prior to their convictions. I thought that part was way overdone. Like, yeah, we can see that they were reasonably cute people who came across as basics. We don't have to told over and over again how innocent they both seem.

In fact, the documentary doesn't delve at all into all of Paul's criminal activity (including losing his job as an accountant and turning to smuggling before his marriage to Karla) and it's SO obvious that Karla is guilty from how happy and nonchalant she seems at their wedding just two weeks after raping and murdering an underaged girl together.

If anything, I feel the directors downplayed Paul to throw more suspicion on to Karla. Like okay okay we get it, Karla was complicit in her own way, but Paul Bernardo is a straight up psychopath and terms like "child pornography" and "sodomy" should have been used much more frequently during multiple episodes of the documentary to hit home at how very deeply sick and disturbing these serial killings actually are.

Lies

Stop making karla out to be a victim!! She was just as involved as he was if not more so. No one died until she came along. You can see in the tapes she's not traumatized in any way. Several times she was left alone with both Leslie and Kristin. She is pure evil.

Alan Young needs to shut his karla loving mouth!

Homolka is the Devil!

Warning: Spoilers
The fact that that woman was able to walk free is a clear sign of the weakness of the Canadian justice system. How those two weren't thrown in jail forever is atrocious! System failed the victims and their families. She literally drugged, raped and murdered her little sister with that other psychopath! Tragedy all around.

Four parter, two part more than needed.
mandagrammy22 July 2023
Although this documentary was quite thorough and held back no details of one of the most sickening couples and their crimes in history, the series ended up being bloated to the point of dulling the horrific impact of the overall story. I lost count of how many times they showed the same video clips to make the same points that had already been made repeatedly. Talking heads, who knew a great deal behind the scenes as well as some knowing the perpetrators personally, also seemed to repeat themselves far too often. Overall, my rating was lowered simply because we could have learned all the same information about this notorious case from a 2 hour series just as easily as the long drawn out 4 hour series we got.

Well done

Warning: Spoilers
It was well done. I didn't know that Paul's lawyer hid the tapes. Anyone who thinks that Karla was painted as a victim clearly didnt watch this documentary.

OK Series
alinaterry-8307820 March 2022
This series was only OK. It didn't have to be as drawn out as it was. I noticed in the 3 episode they kept repeating what was said in the previous 2 episodes. It was just a waste of time to keep rehashing what had already been said 3 or 4 times.

A well down doco

Warning: Spoilers
This was hard to watch, hearing about how messed up and psychotic these killers are. The documentary was well done, wasn't confusing and very informative. 4 episodes was a good amount too, not too much. I'm so angry that woman is out there with a family of her own.

Somewhat decent but misleading
xxlaragyxx4 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This show presents the facts of the case really well but does leave out some of the horrid details of the crimes, out of respect for the victims.

Calling it the lost tapes is a bit of a clickbait, they were destroyed and doesn't show anything new in this sense.

I still think you should watch this if you haven't watched anything regarding the case before, especially considering it was very controversial due to the deal handed to Karla.

They do discuss who was "worse" Paul or Karla. Personally they are both pretty bad

Overall the presentation is decent but the clips from the tapes the same couple of clips repeated, if you get past this. You will enjoy it.

Good series
tmdarby2 March 2022
I thought it was well done. A lot of information I didn't know about the case, including the footage. These two are monsters. People complaining how easy they were on Karla didn't watch the whole series clearly. I'm glad to see they spent a lot of time on the victims, which is how it should be. Hope the police keep an eye on Karla though.

Side note. Leigh-Anne Plato is stunningly gorgeous, almost derails the documentary.

Unethical editing and lots of padding
On_The_Mark20 January 2023
This is a four part show that could easily be 3 or less without the repetition and padding. There are tons of shots of streets and cityscapes and trees and stills and video of Bernardo and Holomoka repeated over and over and over and over. The same things said by the same people and then other people are repeated over and over and over. We have to see people being interview coming in, sitting down. We get a shot of one guy's whiskey glass. Another shot of a guy stopping to take a drink. We get long (unethical) shots of the interviewees holding back tears. We get the people repeating things like "she should have never got that deal" over and over. Yeah, we know, do we need every single person on the show to repeat the obvious?

There's lot of unethical editing. In episode four where they talk about Karla being released from prison, we get long shots of the interviewees looking sad. Some crying. That's it. It's seriously immoral, done simply to evoke emotion by using these people's grief. I hate the people who produced this.

The name of the show implies you're going to be watching the "murder tapes" as well. More immoral stuff about this show. When I saw that title my first thought was "wait, they destroyed the tapes after the trials. What "lost murder tapes" are they referring to? They talk about the tapes in the episode like they do in any other doc about these two. That's it. There's no new light or video we haven't seen here.

We see TONS of the same video you've seen on every other documentary about these two. Over. And over. And over. The same 20 or so shots. And every time someone says "Paul Bernardo" we have to see a still of him or video of him making faces. It's beyond annoying. There came a time when I had to look away every time they did this.

They also do lots of reenactments intertwined with the same video we've seen already and it's edited to imply it's part of the video. For example, she's talking in an interview about how they'd drive around looking for girls - then we see a shot of Paul driving (just a random shot they took, NOT of them looking for girls) intertwined with reenactment shots of young girls walking down the street, implying this IS video of them looking for girls and that's some of the girls they got on video. It's mind bogglingly unethical.

But as I stated, things are repeated ad nauseum throughout the show, stringing out this to four episodes. It would have been a much more solid 3 episode or even 2 episode show.

That said, it's the fourth episode that you get most of the stuff not seen in other documentaries and that's what happened during the trial. This was pretty good. Still a lot of dishonest editing but overall the episode is far and away the best of the four.

One reporter described Karla on the stand as "a beige curtain." Her descriptions were great.

You have Bernardo's lawyer team talking and they think all funny. They laugh and smile throughout. One lady who was a paralegal is is on episode 4 for a lot, talks about how she hates Karla and what a terrible person she is but "we wanted to give Paul everything." She never says anything bad about the guy who orchestrated the whole thing - who besides this was the Scarborough rapists. I hated this lady with a passion, even more than the lawyer.

A lot of the interviews have the camera RIGHT UP AGAINST THE INTERVEES FACE. Why is it so close? Is this a Jonathan Demme film we're watching? Pull the camera out. We don't need to see every pore on the person's face.

Overall, if you're as familiar with this case as I am, you only need to watch the fourth episode. It was good. And you do leave feeling sad for the 3 victims (outside the rape victims who you also feel bad for). I wish this had been produced by better people then ones who did this, though. Could have been better.

Jim Nally is garbage.
kfrankie-657229 January 2022
He avoided professionals who deal with trauma victims, grooming and the resultant behavior, sociopathy, psychopathy, and he does so to deliberately rile up the stupid general public who want to bring back public executions because they're lives are worthless. Please, from a professional psychology, philosophy, and psychopathy lifetime student, rise above the stupid hate and watch something else.

The biggest lie told about Canadian Justice
shaunellsworth2 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I've had my fair share of criminal life in Massachusetts I've studied Canadian Criminal justice for 20 years the average serial killer gets less than 20 years the average kid killer gets less than 20 years bank robbers for Massachusetts went to Canada on purpose because of the last law after robbing almost five banks and getting caught for three they got 3 years and sells that look like dormitory rooms now Canadians are known for boasting how light they are on criminals why is this one any different it's not it just gets people on the TV screen if you watch the documentary there are irrelevant.
