- Ben Mercer: You changed things for me, Annie.
- Annie Walker: And you left me. I was in love with you, and you skipped out with a note.
- Ben Mercer: If I would have stayed any longer, you would have been in danger.
- Annie Walker: From what?
- Ben Mercer: My mission. I was with the Agency.
- Annie Walker: [softly] I knew it. With Stas, on the train tracks. It was you who saved me.
- Ben Mercer: I was tracking him. I'm on my own now.
- Annie Walker: And... and somehow that's my responsibility?
- Ben Mercer: I was in love with you, Annie. That was it.
- Annie Walker: I've thought... so long about what I would say to you if I ever saw you again, and now, I realize I don't wanna talk. I want you to talk. Why are you here... now?
- Ben Mercer: The Cole painting at the auction.
- Annie Walker: You marked it on my programme.
- Ben Mercer: There's more there. Keep digging. Just... push it hard.
- Annie Walker: What kind of cryptic nonsense is that? You show up two years later, out of the blue, and you expect me to "push it hard"? You push it hard!
- [turns away]
- Annie Walker: I don't believe you!
- [walks past]
- Ben Mercer: There's an arms dealer. Seraf Murat. The auction is one of the ways he moves his money.
- Annie Walker: That's why that guy over-bid so much.
- Ben Mercer: Murat's Number Two, Russ Hilburn. He wasn't just buying a Thomas Cole painting. He was buying a Cole and schematics for a Russian missile guidance system.
- Annie Walker: That doesn't make sense. The CIA would wanna stop that. Why would...
- Ben Mercer: They want to control it. They wanna control him. I want to stop Murat.
- Annie Walker: So, just to be clear. You're not asking for forgiveness. You're asking me for a favor. What do you want me to do?
- Ben Mercer: Go to Sophie Jacklin, the Bramble's director. Ask her about February 22nd, Lots 19 and 75. It may take some coaxing, but I think she'll come into Langley with you. And if you have to use my name, you use it.
- Annie Walker: You know her?
- Ben Mercer: Call her "Mona Lisa" and she'll know you're not bluffing.
- Annie Walker: [shakes head] No.
- Ben Mercer: [whispers] Annie. I know this is a lot to take in.
- Annie Walker: The CIA would...
- Ben Mercer: Forget protocol. The Agency is using you to get to me. You can't believe anything they say about me or anything I've done.
- [emphatically:]
- Ben Mercer: Do not trust Joan and Arthur.
- [as she walks past, grabs her arm:]
- Ben Mercer: Maybe I don't deserve this, but I'm asking you to trust me. Trust the man you fell in love with in Sri Lanka.
- [and the beads are there to remind Annie]
- Annie Walker: [to the guard] I need to speak to Ms. Jacklin.
- [Sophie nods consent, and he unlocks the door]
- Sophie Jacklin: Sorry, I haven't much time.
- Annie Walker: I'm Annie Walker.
- Sophie Jacklin: From the Smithsonian. Yes. You were upset about the price of the Cole painting.
- Annie Walker: It was exorbitant.
- Sophie Jacklin: Like I told you, you know, people have their reasons. I can"t really guess why someone would bid what they bid.
- Annie Walker: What about February 22nd, Lots 19 and 75?
- Sophie Jacklin: [surprised] May I see your credentials... please?
- Annie Walker: [after auction] Excuse me, Ms. Jacklin?
- Sophie Jacklin: Yes.
- Annie Walker: Who was the man who bought the Cole painting?
- Sophie Jacklin: I'm... I'm sorry, I can't release personal information. Our bidders value their privacy.
- Annie Walker: Oh, I understand. Uh, lemme ask you. Wasn't that bid a little outrageous?
- Sophie Jacklin: No, I think if you can pay outrageous, you can buy outrageous. This happens from time to time.
- Annie Walker: Yeah, but the... the painting was not worth that.
- Sophie Jacklin: [coolly] Apparently, it was. Excuse me.
- Jai Wilcox: I appreciate the lack of pressure.
- Annie Walker: And... and I appreciate the understanding.
- Jai Wilcox: We've all had relationships that take time to get over.
- Annie Walker: Are you talking about me?
- Jai Wilcox: [smiling] You're a little gun-shy. A lot gun-shy.
- Annie Walker: I guess I am.
- Jai Wilcox: All I'm saying is, I've been there. If you wanna take your time, take your time. I'm around.
- [nods]
- Jai Wilcox: There's nothing I like more than a good barbecue.
- Annie Walker: Don't play games with me.
- Sophie Jacklin: I have no idea what you're talking about.
- Annie Walker: Do you want me to mention Murat?
- Sophie Jacklin: Maybe you should show me your other credentials now. FBI? Interpol? Well, you can't be CIA.
- [reaches for drawer]
- Annie Walker: What makes you say that?
- Sophie Jacklin: 'Cause they would have sent someone else.
- [levels gun at Annie]
- Sophie Jacklin: So, tell me, Annie Walker... who the hell are you?
- Annie Walker: I'm not here to arrest you, or kill you, or whatever you may think. Put the gun down.
- Sophie Jacklin: [advances, the pistol held steady] Oh, you just... happen to be interested in those particular lots.
- Annie Walker: I know about Murat's deals. And Hilburn making the transactions. That was him at the auction, wasn't it?
- Sophie Jacklin: You must think I'm naïve.
- Annie Walker: I was sent here to help you.
- Sophie Jacklin: By whom? You haven't told me anything, yet.
- Annie Walker: I was sent by Ben Mercer.
- Sophie Jacklin: Ben's dead.
- Annie Walker: I saw him last night.
- Sophie Jacklin: I don't believe you.
- Annie Walker: Believe me, Mona Lisa.
- [that hits home, and Sophie lowers the gun]
- Annie Walker: Who was he to you?
- Sophie Jacklin: He didn't tell you?
- Annie Walker: Ben has... many secrets.
- Sophie Jacklin: He was my contact at the Agency. He was the operative who first approached me. I facilitated certain financial transactions for the company, similar to what I do for Hilburn and Murat. Ben made me feel safe. Protected. When they told me that he'd been killed, it wasn't the same way anymore. I felt exposed.
- Annie Walker: You started double-dealing.
- Sophie Jacklin: No. I... I was having some financial troubles and Russ Hilburn's money looked awfully good.
- [scoffs, hands in hair]
- Sophie Jacklin: So, why... why didn't Ben come himself?
- Annie Walker: Ben's in a... complicated situation. And so are you.
- [approaches Sophie]
- Annie Walker: It's the Russians who are selling the plans to Murat, right?
- Sophie Jacklin: I don't... know anything about any plans. They don't tell me.
- Annie Walker: [shakes head] That's not gonna hold up when they start handing out indictments. Or when Murat and Hilburn decide that you're the one causing this problem.
- Sophie Jacklin: [nods] They'll kill me.
- [panics]
- Annie Walker: But they won't have the chance if you come with me to Langley now and tell us what you know.
- Sophie Jacklin: [nods] We have to hurry. Uh, Hilburn's men are on their way now to pick up the painting.
- Annie Walker: That's who you were with on the phone?
- Sophie Jacklin: If you're here when they arrive, they... Look, they're not the kind of men to waste time asking questions.
- [they're outside the office now]
- Sophie Jacklin: There's a... side exit through the warehouse.
- Annie Walker: [looking at Sophie's firearm] You always pack that much heat?
- Sophie Jacklin: I don't even know if it works. I guess what you said about Hilburn... It's not the first time that I thought about what they might do to me.
- Sophie Jacklin: [pointing with gun] The loading dock's through that way.
- [looks down at the pistol]
- Sophie Jacklin: Hey, do you want this?
- Annie Walker: No, keep it. Keep moving towards the dock. Take your shoes off.
- [they both do, and try to sneak past barefoot]
- Sophie Jacklin: Quickly!
- [heads off towards dock]
- Auggie Anderson: You know what that is, right? A huge break. Don't kid yourself. Joan must like you.
- Annie Walker: [scoffs] Right! I can't stop thinking about Sophie. I feel like it's my fault.
- Auggie Anderson: Hey, don't do that, Annie. You can't shoulder that. Russ Hilburn killed her.
- Annie Walker: [she nods tearfully] Just tell me it gets easier.
- Auggie Anderson: When it does,
- [Annie turns to look at him]
- Auggie Anderson: that's when you have to start worrying about yourself.
- [she nods and looks down]
- Joan Campbell: [coming to Annie's assistance] I'd like to speak with my client, alone.
- Vincent Rossabi: Your client? She's as much your client as this is my gavel.
- [pulls his jacket back to reveal shoulder-holstered pistol]
