I like the new cast addition!
JaneBirmingham22 March 2022
I'm digging Cassie, the new partner! Yes, the show is melodrama and it moves pretty fast with the relationships, but once you expect that, it's not bothersome. The show is a family drama! You get, you know, DRAMA. I do think the show is finding its footing and feeling more comfortable with itself. I hope it starts to take its time with the characters and their evolutions now, and get a little more pithy with the dialogue. We shall see! I see so much potential down the road.

Fantastic new partner!

This actress is phenomenal and the chemistry between the actors is obvious! Hoping that the dynamics of the new Ranger will be a plus for the beautiful Walker!

Best Episode

This series is enjoyable, but it has been drifting downhill recently. Now - wham/bang this is an excellent episode driven by the introduction of a strong sassy new female officer and partner. Lots of good interplay between the characters, some great lines and action. For me the development of Cordell's relationship is also a good one and sits naturally with the show's history - others seem unhappy with this, but not me.

Great, Except for the Final Two Minutes

Warning: Spoilers
To get the Negative Out of the Way: I understand why the show runner might want to pair actors Jared Padalecki (Cordell) and Odette Annable (Geri) together.

They're hot. They have great chemistry. And viewers can see that that on the screen. Both CAST MEMBERS are well suited for romantic lead work.

The problem is the writers made Geri an absolutely trifling woman, even if she was Emily's friend and an "Aunt" to the Walker kids. (By the way: how to explain Dad sleeping with Auntie? I'm not sure how that's supposed to go.)

Geri whines, whines, whines about how SHE feels guilty about her part in Hoyt's death and earlier Emily's (Well, guess what, sis, you WERE directly a part of not protecting Emily's six. And your choice to not only turn down Hoyt but also send him to confront Cordell led to Hoyt's death as well.)

YET THE CHARACTER SEEMS TO BE ALL ABOUT CENTERING HERSELF TO GET SYMPATHY FROM HER GROUP (or men in her group. Or Cordell)

On a rewatch over hiatus, I realized how many small things the writers included throughout that play into my dislike and build a case against Geri as more weak than vulnerable; poor at business; careless about relationships, though she mealy mouths family loyalty words.

Whereas other women on Walker are strong, Geri is shaky as hell.

The last two minutes if they'd been any other characters? Sizzling. Well acted. Well directed & shot. But the writers gave us GERI and made her a person that got less and less of my respect as we went on.

So they'll need a lot of heavy lifting now with me & my friends, having made this plot choice. I will try to stay open to that major fixer upper job.

--- --- FORTUNATELY, there was another forty minutes before that.

Writer Casey Fisher and Director Steve Robin gave us a tightly structured show with comedy, action, and even romance (though as above, I disapprove of the character chosen) Ordinarily a 10/10.

Dialogue was spot on, with everyone having a distinctive "voice"--no small feat in this crowd. The ensemble was there everyone was given their chance to swing for the fences.

Kudos also to.the stunt department (Coordinator listed as. Chad Dashnow) because this ep was action packed. Car chases & fights all were top notch, movie quality.

Editing was sharp, including the timing on that one Abeline entry, which was a visual joke of sorts. Every transition felt carefully chosen and executed. Great stuff.

The selection of shots, too, must have been a joy to work with. Just gorgeous visuals, all.

Acting?

The cast was all on its A-game. Even the ending which I disliked due to character seletion was incredibly acted.

No one wasted a scene or a shot--even small things like Liam (Keegan Allen) reacting in the background as Abeline (Molly Hagan) neatly dissects new Ranger Cassie's (Ashley Reyes) ploy to "apply" as a ranch hand.

The scene was AMAZING with the two women--Abeline has grown into a fave--but then add in Allen's small but absolutely perfect choice of reactions? Love.

Liam also bonds with Trey (Jeff Pierre), a combo I didn't know I needed, but now I do. Liam's character seemed to move the seasonal story forward as others fleshed out the new Ranger a bit. (And had action with a case well integrated to all that.)

So many plates spinning, but the writer & director kept it going.

Ashley Reyes had the dicey job of taking on the role of Walker's partner after Lindsey Morgan left. But the writers created a totally different character--and what a wonderful world where two such strong, complex women are given voice.

That Captain James (Coby Bell) would choose her for his division makes sense.

Bell seemed freer in his reactions this episode, perhaps a result of his character's recent near death. And I gloried in all the little things reminding us of his and Cordell's history, as well as simply having fun as a viewer seeing James smile.

Jared Padalecki? The man brings it.

He's done a ton of television, so I shouldn't be surprised, but the skill level this script took was definitely high and he knocked it out of the park. I've already re-watched the episode and have picked up on the many little embellishments he adds to each scene.

It takes a pro.

Finally, the younger cast, too: all four teens showing a lot of depth this episode (Side note: I want to give Todd a hug and entitled Colt a smack--will they try to rehab him or his grandma? Interested to know.)

Anyway, just thoroughly well acted and produced.

Hate to even knock it down from a ten, but, again, that last questionable choice after making the character so low grade? Hard sell.

No, no

Warning: Spoilers
A new partner who attacks Walker without consequence or anyone taking his complains seriously? And she is just a more violent version of Ramirez?

Even the structure of her name is similer (cute nickname - a very common Latino family name). And she does not trust Walker because...? Who knows.

I really think her character is a bad choice.. I laughed when the captain called Padalecki a moose, though. Like Crowley in Supernatural.

WHY ??
doug2go4 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I actually had this episode at an 8 until the last 5 minutes of the show . I like the feisty new partner that portended a chemical bonding between Walker and Cassie making for an interesting partnership. That was dashed in the last 5 minutes when Cassie ( after knowing walker for all of 2 days ) offers romantic advice that he takes and hooks up with Geri who he as mostly ignored for 2 years . Why give Walker a female partner if there is no chemistry intended - bring back Jimmy and give Walker a male partner - the Producers of this show have made a mess of what could be as good as the original by trying to be different. That goes for the screwy relationship between Mickie and Trey who is now a 3rd wheel and unnecessary for the show.
