I Want to...
Mehki_Girl14 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
...roll my eyes, but then I realize that people actually believe this nonsense and that religion is a billion dollar business, so no one who benefits or has been brainwashed is ever going to point out the emperor is naked.

The founder literally pulled the doctrine out of his hat and made it up as he went along and he wasn't the first or the only one.

I don't like religion and what it does to people, but I'm fascinated by the brainwashing and ability to believe despite the cognitive dissonance.

I don't understand how adults can believe the fantastical, but maybe that's why you have to get them when they're young and turn off their brains.

I get it. I get the draw. The need to feel like you have the protection of a large family - but there's always a price to pay. Heck, I'd want to join, except I can't make myself believe or pretend I believe.

Anyway, this slow burn is finally getting to the "juicy" parts. Basically, these men couldn't hack it after their sociopathic father went on a mission and so it was everyone's else's fault (big eyeroll here) - the government, the dark-skinned people, the neighborhood dog, women who don't obey like dogs (more eyerolling).

Here, we get more exposition as to how this fanatical splinter group thought and saw themselves.

In one of the 1 star reviewers, one of the commenter's was just seething at, in their mind, this series painting Mormonism as creating criminals and that just doesn't happen.

Oh really? What about the splinter group in Mexico, which also murdered people in a blood covenant? Or the group that shot a family and buried them in a barn? Or communities that allow men to rape children and women? Or the guy cheating on his wife and drowned her in the tub and his daughters brought him to justice? Or entire families committing fraud against the government they rail against?

This person also claimed that mostly it's people without fathers who commit crimes. Well, as a true crime junkie, I can't tell you how many times criminals come from overly religious homes with abusive dads (and moms) who constantly abuse his wife and children.

Maybe we should say households with a healthy dose of reality and fathers who don't beat their wives and abuse their children might be the best for children.

Religion is not a panacea against the bad in the world. Many times it is the cause and the result of men doing evil things.

We get many flashback in this episode and a little more about the Lafferty family and how their parenting style created monsters who committed terrible crimes. We also get to see more of our lead character's family life and his questioning of his own faith in the LDS and the things he tells his little girls.

Getting to where it's at
Mesina021 September 2022
This episode really does well in most parts. It still continues to be an intriguing crime story that gets more intense further into the investigation. It's also really interesting to see Andrew Garfield's character starting to question his faith in the LDS. He wants to find answers and we do get some here in this episode but it's as though it still has yet to make any sense.

It is quite challenging to decipher but ultimately that's what the show is trying to do. There is a fine line between right and wrong but in this case, it sort of becomes non-existent. This episode showcases the harsh reality of religious fanaticism and the violence it spawns.
