Ah, the People's Choice Awards... The place where "Pretty Little Liars" can beat out "True Detective" and old guys like me learns that there are pop bands called One Direction and One Republic. If you voted, then hopefully your choices are represented here (unless you voted for "Maleficent" as "Favorite Movie" - what's up with that?), and if you voted but don't see your favorites, well, we apologize. There's always next year.

A Shark Tank rerun opened ABC’s night this Tuesday with 4.5 million total viewers and a 1.1 demo rating (per finals), improving on the 3.1 mil/0.9 that last week’s Selfie/Modern Family repeat combo averaged.
Leading out of that, Agents of Shield did 4.6 mil and a 1.6, ticking up a tenth from last week’s series low. Forever (4.4 mil/1.0) was flat.

CBS | NCIS (18.1 mil/2.6) was up 13 percent in the demo, NCIS: New Orleans (16.9 mil/2.3) rose 15 percent and Person of Interest (9.9 mil/1.6) popped 23 percent, improving on last week’s series low.

Fast National ratings for Tuesday, November 18, 2014. "NCIS" and "NCIS: Los Angeles" were both up week-to-week, leading CBS to a dominant overall win and a tight victory among young viewers on Tuesday. Tuesday primetime featured a lot of little week-to-week fluctuations, including "New Girl" and "The Mindy Project" both rising a tiny bit despite a drop for "MasterChef Junior." Over on ABC, a "Shark Tank" repeat comfortably outperformed recent comedy block numbers and helped "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." inch up. Presumably that "Shark Tank" repeat also was responsible for some of the "MasterChef" decline, though that's total speculation. Most of the night's increases and decreases were pretty minimal, but "NCIS: New Orleans" added nearly two million viewers over last week's airing, which came against the second half of a two-hour "The Voice," rather than NBC's significantly lower-rated comedies. And even those NBC comedies were way up from their last airing,...

Why Are Christopher Nolan’s Movies So Fun to Argue About?
The release of a Christopher Nolan movie, even one that “underperforms” at the box office like this week’sInterstellar, is by far the most fervently talked about work of art for several news cycles. Even in the face of constant barrages of Taylor Swift headlines, Nolan’s work is intensely debated and scrutinized in a way no other filmmaker receives for even one film, let alone all of them… read the full article.

It's been a remarkably bloodless fall TV season. There have only been a few shows officially canceled (and a couple more unofficially), while other modestly rated shows have received rather generous full-season pick-ups (like ABC's Forever). Still, some titles have yet to receive a network verdict and could go either way. Below is our Deathwatch guide to what's sticking around for awhile, which shows are still on the bubble and which are canceled (or sorta canceled). One thing you'll notice is there are remarkably few currently endangered shows. That's not to say every green show is actually doing well or...

Fox's Masterchef Junior returned to its best ratings ever Tuesday night. The cooking competition had 5 million viewers and a 1.8 rating among adults 18-49, up 13 percent from its Friday debut last year, plus rose steadily throughout its hour-long premiere. The performance helped improve Fox's struggling comedies New Girl (3.4 million, 1.6) and The Mindy Project (2.9 million, 1.3), which have taken a dive this fall, especially with the now-canceled Utopia having recently haunted the 8 p.m. spot. That NBC's The Voice—which airs up against Masterchef Junior—was a recap last night and CBS was in repeats probably helped. Tuesday was an abnormal night with all the election coverage.

Fast National ratings for Tuesday, November 4, 2014. Fox's "MasterChef" appears to have helped lift Fox to a Tuesday win among young viewers, while CBS' "NCIS" and "NCIS: New Orleans" repeats led overall. However, with live Election Night coverage impacting programming differently in almost every market, it'd be presumptuous to make any big calls based on the ratings equivalent of exit polling. Just as it'd be presumptuous to claim that "MasterChef Junior" is a saving grace for Fox's struggling Tuesday -- the cooking show hit series highs and boosted the network's comedies to post-premiere highs -- it would only be of limited use to note the huge drop for "Marry Me" and "About a Boy" out of a weakened "The Voice" lead-in, though the percentage decline can't make NBC happy. And, finally on the list of things we can't be sure about, ABC's two episodes of "Selfie" did soft numbers, as did the "Marvel: 75 Years,...

In the clip below, master procrastinator Will spends some time bubble-wrap-sumo-wrestling with Marcus instead of packing up his San Francisco apartment — and Marcus sees a perfect opportunity to get Will’s help in finding a new best friend. (Ideally, a friend that isn’t a total jerk this time.)

Rob Lowe‘s vacation from NBC may not last that long, after all.
The Parks and Recreation actor will lead a comedy pilot about a newly sober narcissist whose decision to be a good parent doesn’t come until his kids are teens, our sister site Deadline reports.
The potential NBC comedy follows Lowe’s character, who dries out and returns to his hometown to issue mea culpas to his son and daughter, as well as to his ex-wife and her new family.

Houston, NBC has a problem.
Related Unforgettable Cancelled by CBS
The network has decided not to continue production on its midseason comedy Mission Control, THR reports, which was to star Krysten Ritter (Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23) as a strong ’60s woman who clashes with her egotistical astronaut co-worker (The Mindy Project‘s Tommy Dewey).
According to the report, recasting issues are to blame for the cancellation.
And here’s another bummer: Mission Control would have featured a mini Better Off Ted reunion, with Malcolm Barrett and Jonathan Slavin both among the cast.

Congratulations are in order for the new couple: NBC looks like it chose a good partner in “Marry Me,” as the sitcom scored the best ratings for a Tuesday network comedy since March. In other notable news, CW sped to third place again in the demo thanks to “The Flash,” while Fox fell back to sixth. NBC was first in ratings with a 2.4 rating/7 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and second in viewers with an average of 8.7 million, according to preliminary numbers. At 8 p.m., “The Voice” scored a night-high 3.3/11 and had 11.9 million viewers. The debut...

Fast National ratings for Tuesday, October 14, 2014. The second week of "The Flash" kept The CW in third place for Tuesday in the key demo as the impressively steady "NCIS: New Orleans" helped CBS win the night overall and the "Voice"-boosted "Marry Me" premiere contributed to NBC's win among young viewers. The drop for "The Flash" was easily within expectations and still led into another strong showing for "Supernatural." ABC got most of Tuesday's negative news with the flattish "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." as the night's lone bright spot. "Selfie" was down to The Mulaney Line (a 1.0 in the key demo), "Manhattan Love Story" remained below The Line and dipper in viewers and "Forever" continued its steady slip. Fox's comedies were also in a low place, as repeats in the 8 p.m. hour put the network itself below The Mulaney Line for Tuesday. On to the numbers.

The CW’s The Flash in Week 2 drew 4.3 million total viewers and a 1.7 demo rating (per finals), dipping just 10 percent from its very strong premiere.
Leading out of that, Supernatural (2.2 mil/1.0) was down 12 percent and one tenth.
Elsewhere….
CBS | NCIS (17.3 mil/2.5), NCIS: New Orleans (15.9 mil/2.2) and Person of Interest (9.7 mil/1.5) all ticked down a tenth in the demo.
NBC | The Voice (12.3 mil/3.4) was down from both Monday’s battle rounds (13.3 mil/4.0) and its year-ago Tuesday numbers (13 mil/4.0). Leading out of that, Marry Me debuted to 7.5 mil/2.3 — broadcast TV’s highest rated Tuesday comedy since March — and a “B+” grade from TVLine readers.

“Push your belly out — like as if you’re gonna go take a poop.”
That may be the most alarming piece of advice dispensed by a guest mentor in seven seasons of The Voice Battle Rounds, but I’ll be darned if Alicia Keys’ prescription for hitting a challenging high note didn’t pay off for Team Pharrell member Taylor Phelan. (Wait, is this what musicians mean by putting some stank on it?)

I wrote about NBC's "Marry Me" — and about my wish that I could have seen some more episodes beyond the very premise-y, very grating pilot episode — this morning. Now it's your turn. For those of you who watched tonight, what did you think? Did you find the opening scene hilarious or did it turn you off? Did you come out of the pilot liking Annie and/or Jake? How did you feel about the friends and assorted parents? If you're a "Happy Endings" fan, how did the experience of the two compare? And will you watch again? Have at it. I will try to check back in again sometime in the next few weeks. Hopefully, I'll like upcoming episodes more.

This fall has been littered with sitcoms that want to get noticed so badly that they don't realize how badly they're going about it. As in, yes, you're so incredibly annoying that I notice you and never want to come back. Part of this is because it's a pilot, but most of this is because the system is broken and people making pilots are trying to pop on that first effort despite the damage that may be done. Take tonight's Marry Me premiere on NBC for example, which starts off annoying and unlikable and rarely dips from that, even though

First Kate talks some reality, then we dive in with the week’s comedy, including a preview of Marry Me’s pilot and a lengthier chat about the pilot for Jane the Virgin. Next up is a full week in genre, most of which Kate covers in a roundup, leaving time for more in-depth American Horror Story: Freak Show and The Flash talk, and we round out the week in TV with the dramas, including eventful episodes of The Knick, Boardwalk Empire, and The Good Wife. Afterwards, Latoya Ferguson of the Av Club and the Televoid joins us to discuss the one-season teen drama Life As We Know It.

“No Good Deed” producer Will Packer has sold a comedy script for a father-son comedy to NBC. The script, “Like Father, Like Son,” is inspired by actual events from Packer's life, and will center on a recently divorced man in his early thirties who's just starting to enjoy the benefits of being young, successful and single when he learns he has a fifteen-year-old son from a one-night-stand he had in college. Also read: ‘Marry Me’ Review: NBC Comedy Gets an Enthusiastic ‘I Might’ Packer is executive producing the half-hour comedy project, which stems from Packer's first-look production deal with Universal Television.

Demi Lovato is engaged! Well, at least in the eyes of one little boy. The singer stopped her show during a gig in Moline, Il, on Saturday to pull an adorable 5-year-old fan named Grant onto the stage after she noticed his handmade "Marry Me" sign. The cute kid was clearly a little overwhelmed by the sudden attention (and also forgot the engagement ring he had for Demi!) but he still pulled off the proposal. Spoiler alert - she said yes! Hopefully Demi's on-again, off-again boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama is Ok with her new fiancé. Watch the whole interaction above, and be sure to check out more must-see viral videos. Like those old episodes of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom where the straggler impala gets picked off by the hungry lioness, The Voice‘s Battle Rounds are compelling (though not necessarily comforting) viewing.
Only the strongest voices — or at least those attached to the youngest, doe-eyed-iest, most social-media-approved bodies — survive the two-person, one-song contests.
And while I understand those who wince at the inherent cruelty of whittling a pool of 48 singers down to 32 (eight Battle “losers” get second chances via The Steal), it’s nevertheless a necessary evil. I mean, let’s be honest: After three consecutive weeks of Blind Auditions,...

Happy Monday, Boys & Girls. Time for a slightly early-in-the-week installment of The Firewall & Iceberg Podcast. We bumped this podcast up to Monday so that we could get in a review for The CW's "Jane the Virgin," which we both kinda like. It also adds some freshness to our discussions of Sunday's "The Walking Dead" and "Boardwalk Empire." In this busy podcast, we also reviewed NBC's "Marry Me," discussed the first few "Parenthood" episodes of the season and answered a few pieces of Listener Mail. Whee! Next week's podcast might be a bit later in the week so that I can catch up on a few things that I won't get to this week. That was just a warning. Worry not. A podcast will exist. And here's today's breakdown: "Jane the Virgin" (00:00:55 - 00:13:30) "Marry Me" (00:13:30 - 00:21:50) Listener Mail: Fox's fall struggles (00:22:...

This week’s installment of Saturday Night Live with host Bill Hader had the potential to go one of two ways.
On the optimistic side of the equation, what better choice of emcee than a beloved, eight-season vet of the show, a guy who certainly wouldn’t have any issues with the on-the-fly workings of Studio 8H?
Nevertheless, with SNL presenting its third fresh installment in a three-week period, the question loomed, would the show’s inconsistent writing staff have enough time to create memorable setups and zingers?
Thankfully, this was an instance where — despite a deplorably unfunny cold open...

Confession time: we're not the most emotional people in the world. Laugh-crying, like what we do when watching NBC's new comedy Marry Me? That comes easy. Actual crying? Not so much.
