When the idea for her upcoming novel “Expiration Dates” began percolating in her head, author Rebecca Serle worried at first that the concept was “gimmicky.”
“There was something missing,” she tells Variety over the phone, two weeks before the book’s March 19 launch. The premise — based on the question, “What if a woman got slips of paper that told her how long she’d spend in a relationship?” — felt like it verged on triteness. But the story evolved beyond that initial fear when Serle figured out the book’s midpoint, a major revelation that raises the stakes for its protagonist, Daphne, and introduces a sobering depth to an otherwise lighthearted concept.
“All of my books through ‘Expiration Dates’ have some kind of midway twist,” she says. “I discovered what that was, and then I started writing.”

“The Last of Us” Season 2 has found its Abby.
The fan-favorite character, a conflicted soldier embroiled in conflict between her own post-apocalyptic militia and a religious cult, will be played by Kaitlyn Dever. Production is set to begin in February, with filming on the critically revered and Daytime Emmy-winning show previously postponed due to the since-ended strikes.
In Naughty Dog’s “The Last of Us Part II,” released for PlayStation 4 in January 2020, Abby is as much a co-lead of the game as the original’s star, Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey in the series). Throughout the game, players alternate between Ellie and Abby’s points of view in fighting off humans infected by Cordyceps as well as their fellow survivors left in the United States. “Part II” takes players from rural Wyoming to a dystopian Seattle.
No spoilers, but the sequel game finds Ellie and Abby on a collision course...

Horror remains as vital as ever. While other films flounder at the box office, horror almost always reigns supreme. Audiences simply cannot get enough. We inherently love to be scared; to be disturbed; to be frightened. To sit in the dark and let something scary take hold of us. The horror films of 2023 were an eclectic bunch — weird, wonderful, both fresh and familiar. Slasher throwbacks, modernist takes on classic tropes, and bold new voices in the genre all presented themselves to us, giving us the creeps in the process.
As is always the case when making a list like this, it's important to recognize the titles that didn't make the cut. So while we're proud of our ranked list of the top 10 horror movies of 2023, we also want to highlight several titles not on the list — "Knock at the Cabin," "The Sacrifice Game," "Haunted Mansion," "The Conference," "The Outwaters," "The Passenger,...

Why isn't every genre fan talking about Brian Duffield? He served as the screenwriter of fan-favorite hits like "The Babysitter," "Underwater," "Love and Monsters," and the new Netflix animated series, "Skull Island." He also made his directorial feature debut with the explosively emotional "Spontaneous," which I will fully admit was my #1 film of 2020. Now, Duffield is back with the alien invasion film "No One Will Save You," featuring "Booksmart," "Rosaline," and "Unbelievable" star, Kaitlyn Dever. The film is yet another homerun for Duffield, but the story differs from his usual snappy dialogue and witty banter, as Dever's character, Brynn, isn't one for talking.
/Films own Ethan Anderton recently had the chance to chat with Duffield about the film and learned what led to a story with minimal dialogue. Turns out, it was kind of an accident. "There's a moment in the movie where Kaitlyn's character goes for help, and it doesn't go well,...

Wow, can you believe that Halloween will be here in just over five weeks? Oh yes, it’s time to get in the mood with a creepy thriller mostly set at night but stretches well past dawn. Okay, we’ve got some of the essentials for a modern “chiller-Diller”. There’s a big house near the woods, far away from any neighbors. Check. Its sole occupant is a single young woman. Double check. Naturally, there are eerie shadows passing by the windows at night, accompanied by strange noises. Yup, a hat trick! Must be a distant cousin of Jason or Michael. Let’s put the brakes on, because this menace is much more sinister…and otherworldly. Now if he (or it) could “use its words”, I’m sure it would utter a variation of this dire warning to the home’s solitary occupant: No One Will Save You.

When last we saw Kaitlyn Dever in a Disney+ (Hulu across the pond) film, she was getting romantically entangled in the story of Romeo & Juliet for comedy Rosaline. She probably wishes that was her biggest problem now she's facing off against threatening extraterrestrials in new horror thriller No One Will Save You, due later this month. Check out the trailer:
Writer/director Brian Duffield, who last made Spontaneous here goes full Close Encounters for the story of lonely young woman Brynn, who normally spends most of her time shut in at home.
But she's forced to draw on her considerable reserves of courage and adaptability when aliens invade – home invasion meets nasty space creatures – and Brynn must fight back.
"I think there's a deeply buried feeling that every alien invasion movie could turn out to be true because they remain such an unknown in our daily lives," Duffield says in a statement.

Aliens have arrived, and that may be just one of Kaitlyn Dever’s problems, in the new trailer for “No One Will Save You.” The sophomore effort from director Brian Duffield, whose “Spontaneous” was an unusually of-the-moment horror parable for kids growing up in an era of mass shootings and climate change, arrives on Hulu courtesy of 20th Century Studios on Sept. 22.
Dever stars as Brynn, who puts up a surprising amount of resistance when aliens show up on her doorstep. The trailer cleverly starts with a tease that the film will be a home invasion thriller before revealing that the invaders aren’t from our planet. We then get a montage of our heroine doing her best to fend off the intergalactic menace, including period details like a rotary telephone and what looks to be 1970s wardrobes.

While “Love in Taipei” promises transportive and transformative escapades with its adaptation of Abigail Hing Wen’s novel “Loveboat, Taipei,” the story’s core strengths are undervalued in the translation from book to screen. This Paramount Plus feature, centered on a young woman embarking on a life-changing overseas journey, only pays lip service to the struggle of a first-generation Asian-American caught between two worlds. Instead, it places more emphasis on her romantic entanglements with two young men who all too often motivate her foundational change. Director Arvin Chen cleverly brings us into her psyche through whimsical aesthetic techniques and fantastical asides, but doesn’t make her emotions palpable enough to touch our hearts.
Eighteen-year-old Ever Wong (Ashley Liao) has always felt like an outsider in her tiny suburban town of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, being one of only three Asian-American students in her predominantly white school. Her parents (Jacko Chiang and...

After Disney unceremoniously removed dozens of titles from Disney+ and Hulu at the end of May, the company on Friday recorded via an SEC filing a “$1.5 billion impairment charge in its fiscal third quarter financial statements to adjust the carrying value of these content assets to fair value.”
And that might not be the end of it – according to the same filing the company could incur charges up to $400 million “related to produced content.”

It was a baffling move given how closely connected many of the series and movies were to already-established Disney IP, making them an odd fit to shop to other streamers or linear platforms. In early May, Disney announced it would be removing various titles from its streaming services, Hulu and Disney+, in a move reminiscent of Warner Bros. Discovery late last year. Despite Twitter bullying the company into keeping the 2018 documentary on The Little Mermaid animator Howard Ashman (as its live-action remake hit theaters), it wasn’t able to save over 105 titles on the chopping block. Disney gave audiences a week to watch these titles before they were permanently removed from the platforms as a cost-cutting measure. Rosaline, Willow, Cheaper by the Dozen (2022), and several other titles with recent premieres have been removed. Older fan favorites like Marvel’s Runaways have been scrubbed from both platforms. With no physical releases or complimentary YouTube uploads, there’s no way to watch most of these shows legally. It’s possible we could see these shows resurface on a Fast service, but that remains to be confirmed.

In what has become a grim reality of the next phase of the streaming era, 60 movies and television shows have left Disney+ and Hulu. That includes Sundance crowdpleasers like “Timmy Failure,” initially-intended for theatrical releases like “Artemis Fowl” and “The Once and Future Ivan,” big-budget IP adaptations like “Willow” and “Y: The Last Man,” and high-concept YA dramedies like “Stargirl” and “Rosaline.” Once such casualty is “The Princess.”
Released in August of 2022, the original high-concept hybrid of “Die Hard” and “The Raid” features Joey King (star of “The Kissing Booth” trilogy) as a princess trapped in a tower having to fight and kill her way floor-by-floor to save herself and her family from a violent coup attempt. It’s the kind of clever genre exercise that might have been a theatrical release a generation ago. Had it been given a theatrical release, however token, it would also have been available on DVD,...

Disney is going there, you guys.
As previously teased during the company's quarter one earnings call, the company is purging several titles from its streaming services, Disney+ and Hulu.
The practice has become common in recent months, with HBO Max leading the charge, wiping several projects from existence.
Undoubtedly, fans and creatives are struggling with the concept, but maybe some of the affected shows could show up elsewhere.
"We will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion," Disney's chief financial officer, Christine McCarthy, said during the earnings call.
Westworld, The Nevers, and other HBO fare popped back up on Fast services shortly after the controversial decision.
But for some shows, this could be the death knell that could be the difference whether new fans find them down the line.

Disney did a little (late) spring cleaning of its streaming services this week, removing several properties from Disney+ and Hulu. Among those that will go on May 26 include some high profile recent shows like “Willow,” “Y: The Last Man,” “Dollface,” and “The World According to Jeff Goldblum.” What makes this troubling for many home viewers who may have been fans (or even stans!) of the affected programs is that, in most cases, there are no Blu-ray/DVD options. In the old days you could always hit record on your Vcr to build a personal library, but it’s not so easy to capture material from streaming—and the whole point of streaming is not needing to do that, right?

Get ready to hug your physical DVDs, Blu-rays and 4K discs a little tighter, film fans – because while the age of streaming seemed to come with the promise of everything being available everywhere all at once, that has recently begun to give way to a less optimistic reality. After multiple HBO Max projects were dropped from that service – with no other home to view them on, and no physical release either – it now seems that Disney+ is following suit, with major series, documentaries and original movies set to be dropped from the service on 26 May. It is expected that this is being pursued as a cost-cutting measure, though the exact metrics and cost implications are unclear.
Among the projects leaving Disney+ one week today, according to Deadline, will be the likes of the recent Willow streaming series, sports drama sequel series The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, the Turner & Hooch show,...

As expected, Disney is following Warner Bros. Discovery and removing under-performing titles from its streaming services in a bid to write off nearly $2 billion from its bottom line.
Scripted titles set to be removed from Hulu and Disney+ include FX’s Y: The Last Man, Pistol, Little Demon, Hulu-turned-Disney+ series Mysterious Benedict Society, Disney+’s Big Shot, The Mighty Ducks, Turner & Hooch, Willow and ABC-turned-Hulu comedy Maggie, as well as National Geographic’s The World According to Jeff Goldblum. In all, there are more than 30 shows that will be removed starting next week from the platforms in this first round of reductions. The titles, many of which are listed below, will vanish starting May 26. Sources say the programming could be made available elsewhere, like digital sell-through platforms, etc.

Film rights to Rebecca Serle’s novel “One Italian Summer” have sold to Paramount Pictures.
The Brian Robbins-led studio won a competitive auction for the bestseller, published by Simon & Schuster’s Atria label. Temple Hill will produce a feature adaptation and Serle is executive producing with David Stone of Tfc Productions.
“One Italian Summer” follows Katy, a young woman reeling from the recent loss of her mom and best friend Carol. Katy embarks on the trip of a lifetime, meant to be spent as mother and daughter, over two weeks in Positano. Buoyed by the stunning waters, beautiful cliff sides, delightful residents and delectable food, Katy feels herself coming back to life. Things take a supernatural turn when suddenly her mother appears in the flesh — healthy, sun-tanned and thirty years old. Over the course of the summer, Katy not only discovers Carol as a young woman, but more about herself than she expected.

Disney's decision to send most of 20th Century Studios' recent films directly to Hulu has proven a bit of a mixed blessing. On the one hand, it's allowed those with either health issues and/or access-related concerns about going to movie theaters to have safe, immediate access to films as worlds apart as "Deep Water," "Prey," and "Rosaline." On the other hand, it's deprived those who might have preferred to catch those movies on the big screen of the option of doing so. That's in no way to suggest that making films more accessible is somehow bad — precisely the opposite. The real issue is simply the limiting of viewing options.
Personally, as someone who is perfectly content watching films for the first time at home and not particularly fussy about spoilers, I'm fine with waiting a little while for a movie to play in theaters before hitting the home market.

One decade after injecting their relentless and bold style into the Evil Dead franchise (I'm still in awe of the Abomination's blood rainstorm), director/co-writer Fede Alvarez and co-writer Rodo Sayagues are bringing their talents to the Alien franchise in 20th Century Studios' new film that begins production in Budapest on March 9th, and we have a look at the cast list and brief synopsis:

Update: In addition to Merced, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu are also joining the film, with the story described as "a group of young people on a distant world find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe."
The most recent challenge that Isabela Merced faced was to her romantic life in Rosaline. She'll face an entirely different level of threat in a new project, as she's joining Fede Álvarez' Alien movie.
Cailee Spaeny is aboard to star in the movie, which is still being kept in the dark aside from the fact that it'll feature the usual assortment of xenomorphs and their associated terrors.
Alvarez wrote the new film, and is at work on it, with Alien overlord Ridley Scott producing. It won't directly connect with either the original movies or Scott's prequel films, but it is set in the same universe.

Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet remains one of the more iconic movies based on the work of William Shakespeare, but the project wasn’t exactly free from controversy. Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting were just 15 and 16 years old at the time of filming, respectively, and the movie included a bedroom scene which included glimpses of Hussey’s breasts and Whiting’s buttocks. The two Romeo and Juliet actors have now filed a lawsuit in Santa Monica Superior Court accusing Paramount Pictures of “sexually exploiting them and distributing nude images of adolescent children.“
According to the lawsuit, Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting allege that Franco Zeffirelli, who died in 2019, had told them that there would be no nudity in Romeo and Juliet. Toward the end of filming, he said that they would need to perform in the nude or else “the Picture would fail.” To make matters worse,...

2022 marked a very complex year for the ever-raging streaming wars. While consumers pondered which of their many subscriptions to finally cancel, HBO Max got busy purging its library, Netflix made preparations to crack down on password sharing, and Peacock tried bulking up to finally spark some interest. Meanwhile, the House of Mouse is still experimenting with the best of both worlds, uniting sister services Disney+ and Hulu with shared titles and bundle deals. Which of the streaming services is triumphing above the others remains up for debate, but for better or worse, they'll certainly continue to evolve until they successfully trample the competition.
One of the most exciting signs of change came from Hulu, which sought to bolster its library with more original titles, exclusive to the service. That mission was certainly accomplished, in large part thanks to a partnership with 20th Century Studios, the Disney subsidiary that announced a...

Kelvin Harrison Jr. has been on quite the biopic tip of late. For the record, I'm not complaining. Since breaking out in "Waves," Harrison has proven his mettle as one of the most exhilarating young actors working today. Watching him in anything is a total treat because no matter the project, no matter the character, Harrison always brings an exciting, earnest perspective.
After appearing as B.B. King in Baz Luhrmann's "Elvis" — and before transforming into the "Radiant Child" himself, Jean-Michel Basquiat, for "Samo Lives" — Harrison is set to star in the classical music biopic, "Chevalier." The film has already garnered fresh interest after debuting a trailer in November, so here's everything you need to know about the forthcoming film and more.

Rosaline — “Rosaline” is a fresh and comedic twist on Shakespeare’s classic love story “Romeo & Juliet,” told from the perspective of Juliet’s cousin Rosaline (Kaitlyn Dever), who also happens to be Romeo’s recent love interest. Heartbroken when Romeo (Kyle Allen) meets Juliet (Isabela Merced) and begins to pursue her, Rosaline schemes to foil the famous romance and win back her guy. Going into production as Hollywood was starting to emerge from its Covid lockdown protocols, Rosaline proved to be a fun and therapeutic shoot for its cast. The fact that it was a light-hearted movie helped, and Minnie Driver says the fact that they shot overseas with a cast she truly loved certainly didn’t hurt. Photo: ‘Rosaline’ Hulu has given the world a steady lineup of original content, and their latest release ‘Rosaline’ is a gem of a film. Everyone knows the tale of Romeo and Juliet, the star-crossed lovers who meet a tragic end. The story has been told countless times throughout film and literature, it almost feels as if there’s nothing more to squeeze out of the Shakespearean classic. Alas! Along comes ‘Rosaline,’ a fresh take on the play which tells the story from the point of view of Romeo’s ex-girlfriend. The concept alone is a stroke of genius, but that’s not the only factor that makes this film feel like a worthy watch. Hmmm, now this is something pretty rare. The two films I’m reviewing for this weekend have a few things in common, “subject-wise”. This too concerns an estranged couple reuniting for a non-holiday event. With Raymond & Ray, it’s about two stepbrothers having to travel to their dad’s funeral, while this new release is about an estranged (long-divorced) parents having to travel to their daughter’s wedding. And it’s not a two-hour car trip, but a rather long flight to an exotic island. Oh, and the former marrieds are played by Oscar-winning Hollywood royalty, or about as close as you can get to that. Plus it’s their fourth flick acting opposite each other (fifth if you count when he directed her). So lots of moviegoers are hoping that their chemistry is still potent as they go to their multiplex box office,...
