In this episode: Fred returns to Carrie in LA to tell her how about Portland (and sings a song about it); a couple need to get the full run-down of where the chicken came from and how it was raised before eating it; a man is harassed in a store for using their bathroom without buying anything.
And so it begins. The first episode of Portlandia sets the tone for the series, skewering the pretentiousness and superficiality of society (and of one city in particular) and offense-seekers and generally those that try to force their agendas on others.
Hilariously funny at times, often in an understated way. There's the problem though: unless you're concentrating 100% and on the same wavelength as Carrie and Fred, the joke might just over your head.
Talking of Carrie and Fred, while Fred Armisen's comedy credentials are well-known from SNL, before this Carrie Brownstein was known as the vocalist and guitarist of Sleater-Kinney, an alternative rock band with social commentary in their lyrics, and had no significant acting credentials (comedic or dramatic) to speak of. She is quite the revelation here.
