Mumbai, Feb 24: While people are more open to films on serious and hard-hitting subjects now, filmmaker Nila Madhab Panda feels the Indian audience still needs to be more accepting towards documentaries.
Panda has submitted his Odia film 'Kalira Atita' for the Oscars and the film will also have world premiere at the 28th Prague International Film Festival next month. The film is about villages being consumed by the sea.
"We have been habituated to a certain kind of cinema. We have all grown up watching Bollywood cinema or regional cinema where everything is larger than life. So, who will be interested in my film that shows plants and trees and is about the sea eating a village? Our audience is habituated with sound, music, larger-than-life stars and sets," said the filmmaker.
"Documentaries don't work here. With Ott, people have gradually started watching documentaries. Nevertheless, I thought let me create a character that is emotive.

Filmmaker Nila Madhab Panda has received Padma Shree, one of the highest civilian honors in India, presented by the president of India in 2016. He has directed six Hindi feature films. His first feature, the iconic I Am Kalam, has won thirty-three International awards and one National Award. He followed that success with a series of acclaimed films, including Jalparia, Babloo Happy Hai and Kaun Kitney Paani Mein.
On the occasion of his latest film, “Dark Wind” (Kadvi Hawa), screening at Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles, we spoke with him about climate change and its consequences, Sanajy Mishra, and other topics.
Climate change is real and Indian theatrical release of “Dark Wind” coincided with the Delhi toxic smog problem, which made the international news. This made a lot of people realize the importance of the film, so the timing was perfect I’ve heard you have been working on this script for a long time,...

It’s not easy to sculpt a satire out of the raw material of misery. In a wretchedly poor part of Odisha there once lived a low-caste lover-boy who swoons over the zamindar’s daughter and pays with his life for his misplaced ardour.
From this melodramatic starting point director Nila Madhab Panda (I Am Kalam) weaves an intriguing gentle fable of class differences where water is the precious bartering commodity. So we see an over-the-top prostitute being given pouches of water as her price for …ummm…. service rendered. And we see a derelict and obese zamindar drinking whiskey in lieu of water and when quizzed whether he’d like his drink with water or soda, Saurabh gives his man-Friday the kind of shriveling glance that could destroy a whole village of infidels.
Shukla as the doddering relic of a rapidly evaporating feudal order is in splendid form, as usual.

We have seen him give scene-stealing performances in Shor In The City, Shanghai and I Am Kalam. Now Pitobash Tripathy is the latest Bollywood actor to make an impact in Hollywood. Pitobash's bravura act in Craig Gillespie's Million Dollar Arm has won him a new fan following in the West. Among the lineup of Indian actors in the film it is Pitobash who has won the maximum acclaim. "Aur mazey ki baat yeh hai ke film abhi Us mein release nahin hui hai. It has only been released in India. And the response is tremendous. The film opens on May 16, in the Us," says Pitobash excitedly from Los Angeles where he has been stationed since April 30 for his big ticket to Hollywood. Discernibly excited the young Oriya actor who started his Bollywood career with a brief role in Krishna Dk and Raj Nidimoru's 99 in 2009 says he feels...

The clamor has begun. As many as four films are releasing this Friday and interestingly, each of these belongs to a different genre. ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’ is a romantic comedy with a twist. ‘Heartless’ is a romantic drama. ‘Babloo Happy Hai’ is a buddy comedy while ‘Ya Rab’ is a social thriller.
Amongst these four films, ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’ would be seeing the widest release, what with Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap joining hands. The film has been promoted quite well while the premise is looking interesting too. Seeing a decent mid-sized release for itself, the Sidharth Malhotra-Parineeti Chopra starrer should enjoy an opening around the 50% mark and then see youth stepping in greater numbers, if the word of mouth is good.
‘Heartless’ is the comeback affair for Adhyayan Suman and has enjoyed decent promotion too. It boasts of some good songs, something that has been the case with Adhyayan right through (Haal-e-Dil,...

National award-winning filmmaker Nila Madhab Panda is in shock over the liberal attitude of the Censor Board Of Film Certification (Cbfc). He had gone for a certification for a censor certificate for his new film Babloo Happy Hai with much trepidation. "My film is about the casual attitude today's youngsters have towards pre-marital sex. Both my earlier feature films I Am Kalam and Jalpari have featured children as protagonists. This is the first time I've gone into adult territory. I thought the censor board would go over-board cutting the scenes and dialogues where sex is discussed explicitly. I thought they'd treat my film like Grand Masti. To my surprise they agreed to give me a UA certificate. The censor board felt youngsters under the age of consent should also know about the pitfalls of pre-marital sex. " It seems it isn't only Panda who earlier made children's films, who has grown up.

Disney has announced that Jon Hamm's new film, Million Dollar Arm, has started shooting. The movie is being directed by Craig Gillespie (Fright Night), and also stars Bill Paxton, Lake Bell, and Alan Arkin. Here's what the film is about:
Based on a true story, Disney’s “Million Dollar Arm” follows Jb Bernstein, a once-successful sports agent who now finds himself edged out by bigger, slicker competitors. He and his partner Aash (Aasif Mandvi) will have to close their business down for good if Jb doesn’t come up with something fast. Late one night, while watching cricket being played in India on TV, Jb comes up with an idea so radical it just might work. Why not go to there and find the next baseball pitching sensation? 2012 turned out to be a year when a number of smaller or independent films made their way onto many Top Ten lists. But, as always, there are films that, for a number of reasons, risk being forgotten or overlooked, especially in a year where there are so many great films to choose from. Here are 13 films – 10 already released, 3 from the festival circuit – that you should have seen in 2012. It’s still not too late!

Director: Nila Madhab Panda, Writer: Deepak Venkateshan, Actors: Lehar Khan, Krishang Trivedi, Harsh Mayar, Parvin Dabas etc.
Nila Madhab Panda deserves accolades for presenting an issue-based film in an entertaining and gripping manner. Jalpari, based on the issue of female foeticide, maintains a fine balance and never goes overboard preaching the cause. In fact, it weaves it cleverly into an adventure thriller which successfully drives the message home and is palatable to children and adults alike.

Ten million female fetuses are estimated to have been aborted over the past two decades in India according to ActionAid. 35 million females are also ‘missing’ according to the 2001 National Indian Census. Female feticide is an urgent and prevalent issue, and this horror does not only apply to India. Oxford University research based on birth statistics revealed that 1500 females from England and Wales have gone ‘missing’ since 1990. Sons being valued higher than daughters seem to have become ‘the norm’ in Indian Society. Whilst some parents feel their daughters to be the ‘Laxmi’ (Goddess) of the house, others are repulsed by them. The expense of paying a dowry, the responsibility of family honour resting upon a daughter, as well as daughter’s being viewed as ‘parahi’ (belonging to her husband’s family) are some factors that encourage the murdering of an unborn female child.

One of the finest finds of recent times, Pitobash Tripathy, has made his mark in almost all the films that he has acted in. Be it a fleeting appearance in Rajkumar Hirani's 3 Idiots, his breathtaking performance in National Award winner I Am Kalam or his brilliantly spontaneous act in Krishna Dk's Shor In The City, for which he also won the Screen Award for best comedian. Even though he is working in many films, we were still quite curious to know what Pitobash is up to in...

Recently, I was at a round table discussion on “Managing and Protecting Creativity” at Iim Bangalore. Alongside me were several legendary filmmakers and dancers. When their turn came, each of them said they were not great speaking in front of an audience. But I feel if our generation does not speak out, we will keep on having such seminars and talks, on Indie cinema, and on creating and protecting creativity, without any result ever. So, I believe in speaking my mind,...

1. Pyaar Ka Punchnama: The year’s sleeper success that kept us awake for a good 2 hours with its celluloid anthem of ribtickling misogyny. Three room-mates and their troubled love relationships formed the core of the comic conflict. Every character and each episode spilled over with a delightful déjà vu. Debutant director Luv Ranjan managed a 3-guys-in-a-sexist-soup comedy much better than Madhur Bhandarkar in Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji. And the director did it with untried actors. Kartik Tiwari(who is now doing the same director’s nextSaathi) and Divyendu Sharma(who is in David Dhawan’s Chashme Buddoor) were among the best discoveries of the year.We luv you,Luv, for bringing push to shove without tripping over.
