Watch it for Shaan, for Shamoon, for Pakistan
aly2005-118 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't expected much of a story from this film, but watched it for SHAAN, our BEST hero who never got the role at par with his level. Watch it for Shamoon, the best Villain ever in a Pakistani movie, he stands out as Heath Ledger stood out in Batman Begins. Watch it, for those sick minded cheap TV anchors, who didn't reported this Mega Event in our Film Industrie's History. Don't just moved by the story, stories are stories, at the end of day, its about Patriotism. Support it for being Pro Pakistani. As far as film is concerned, it lacked focus, his movie had its individual moments of foolishness, and individual scenes that SHINED, movie lacked character building, it lacked realistic world setup, and worst thing was very fake English accent. But it was better then any Indian Action movie, which normally cross all levels of stupidity.

My first and contented experience with Pakistani cinema
BeneCumb10 September 2014
In my submission, I have not seen a Pakistani film before, but as the fame of Waar had reached my country as well, I decided to watch it, for another approach on terrorism matters (I have learned to avoid US films on the said topic). In spite of some clichés and Hollywood action influences (including Tarantino), I find Waar giftedly created and performed: directing, photography, music background and leading performances were all up to scratch, flashbacks were not annoying and were logical part of the script, religion did not dominate and was expressed in a decent manner, the apparently huge budget helped to create ungarbled thrill, etc.

The "problem" for me was to distinguish some actors at times (especially in dark/night environments), as well as to assess reliability-reality of the plot. Therefore, I followed the film as a distant outsider, enjoying the creation and obtaining additional information of this large and beautiful country.

Not up to the mark
khurramshamsi7 October 2014
I went to watch this movie with high hopes but it was far less than my expectations. The action sequences were brilliant and new to Pakistani Cinema but that was it. There was not much depth in the story. Local sentiments expressed in a foreign language felt like we were watching a dubbed movie. The subject of terrorism was explored in a lopsided manner. Instead of exploring the hardliner Islamists mindset, the story writer went for the easy and safe target i.e. India. I don't understand why this movie was made in English as there is nothing in it for foreign audience. The dialogs would have been more impressive if written in Urdu which was another drawback of the movie.

WAAR- A Satisfying Cinematic Experience
sabiyalsaghir1017 October 2013
Before i start,i want to clarify that I'm not a reviewer but merely a movie fanatic,so please excuse my poor language.

Watch this movie for Spectacular edge-of-the-seat Action Sequences,A Strong Plot,Some Top-Notch Acting and the Best Music Score ever in a Pakistani movie,It totally delivers what was promised in the trailer. For a Pakistani movie, this is extremely good and an Average Pakistani will surely enjoy it.Great job by the whole team, especially Mr.Bilal Lashari, you sir have proved that Pakistan can come out of watching dumb downed action movies.I'm looking forward to your next project.Extremely well job for someone so young and talented. It was worth the wait.

Detalied Review:

-Visually Spectacular, eye candy scenes,Top-Notch Action Sequences and Cinematography. The Action Sequences are gripping and on par with level of Hollywood movies, and the Screenplay is handled perfectly, except for a few scenes, the movie doesn't lag throughout it's length, which I think is the best trait of an action thriller.Extremely well job by the whole Editing team for bringing us this great cinematic experience.

-Direction is fresh and beautifully handled.Bilal Lashari delivered what he promised, and should be called a true perfectionist. His talent and enthusiasm reflects in each and every scene. The scene with the blend of Meesha and Shamoon's Waltz with Terrorist attack on police academy was an experiment done well.

-Plot wise, the movie is a bit biased against India, but that's pretty much the truth we face today,it's RAW vs PAK throughout the movie,a few plot holes here and there but it won't disappoint. It is very solid and true to a great extent, shows us the facts that caused our current scenario.Thumbs up to Mr.Hassan Rana, who did a fine job. What i loved about it was that it doesn't offend the intelligence of the viewer. The whole movie was handled perfectly except the ending, which i think was was poorly executed and hurried. The melodrama should have been avoided. That's the reason I rate it 8/10

-Acting wise, everyone did justice to their roles, particular mentions to Ayesha Khan and Hamza Abbasi for the brilliant chemistry, and Shaan was exceptional in his role of course, you give him a justified role,he can prove that he's so much more than an undead village superhero like his previous movies, with Khuda Ke Liye and Waar,he proves he is the best, and not in any way, less than any great actor you see in Bollywood or Hollywood. He is slowly evolving to perfection with each movie. thumbs up to Ali Azmat and Meesha Shafi who played their parts extremely well and made a great debut.Shamoon Abbasi fit perfectly in his role as a villain,he is evil and a perfect opposite match for Shaan.

-Character Roles were a bit poorly developed and should have been given more thought.Dialogues were perfect, enjoyable and a wave of clapping pursued whenever Shaan came on-screen with his witty remarks. The Decision to shoot 90% of this movie in English can be justified, majority can understand the movie but i saw a guy sitting there who was being translated each and every scene in Urdu by his friend so he can understand what's happening, although Urdu Subtitles were available.

-The Music Score of the movie is something worth particular mention, extremely great job by Amir Munawar and the whole team, the score is what that makes the scenes feel interesting and enthusiastic. The songs were emotional and energetic.

On the whole,it was an enjoyable experience and we are proud to see Pakistanis coming forward and making great cinema.Don't miss it! It's a MUST-WATCH!

One of the finest Pakistani movies I have ever seen
movais17 October 2013
On the way back from the cinema.. feeling proud and hopeful with the Pakistani Cinema taking its shape. Bilal Lashari has done tremendous job by producing this great movie Waar, which has every thing to keep the viewer glued. Great visuals, excellent acting and spectacular action makes "Waar" a must watch.

From beginning to an end its a complete entertainment. The background scores and sound effects are great. For me the movie which takes applause, laughter and screams is the movie for masses and Waar got it all. My experience in Cinema watching the movie was great.

Had it been a better video quality would make Waar fairly comparable to any Hollywood movie.

It's better than what we expected! the best Pakistani movie of all time.
muhannidkhan-821-90035118 October 2013
This is my first ever movie review so if there are some mistakes then i would try to do better in the future review. for me the movie is a 10/10. Waar was the most anticipated movie for a lot of reasons, for example the amazing cinema-tics shown in the trailer , the dialogue's with patriotism in them , a strong cast , and a young and talented director. For me it was the same like every other Pakistani movie freak and i had to watch it the day it got released. As expected the movie met my expectations and even surpassed them at times. It was a complete action packed entertainment flick with minor flaws, The direction and editing for instance was superb and Bilal Lashari showed the audience that he is one of the best in Pakistan and for me , even better than any Indian director at present. The editors have done a great job. The score in the movie deserves a standing ovation because it was brilliant . The cast did exceptionally well and Shan,Ayesha,Shamoon and Hamza were simply outstanding. The one thing that is worth mentioning is the patriotism in the movie. The downside of the movie was it's story , it was soft gripped and its would have been a perfect one if the story was better , the anti India thing wasn't the thing i was worried about but the sudden change of the feeling between scenes and the action sequences suddenly changing to drama scenes made it some what off balanced. The thing that got me glued to the chair was the acting , direction , the music and the beautiful cinematic experience of the movie. In the end i want to say that nobody is perfect there were some small flaws in the movie but over all it was Amazing and at times it made me wonder, if it was seriously a Pakistani movie , A job well done by Bilal Lashari and i hope that he would carry on his great work. and Shan should sign only good movies cause his talent has been wasted for years.

The Biggest Movie Pakistan Has Ever Produced !
mohsinzlife17 October 2013
Waar comes to us after much anticipation that spreads over the course of almost 1.5 years and it certainly lived up to the anticipation...The movie's execution is immaculate and needless to say it is very well linked with the current situation of Pakistan. Also that it brings forth the contributions of armed forces of Pakistan, what most of common Pakistanis and foreign media is unaware of. The closing message which is remarkable as it says "As long as the history is being written by hunters...lions would never be known as heroes" speaks for the overall concept of the movie which certainly is a major leap in attempting to build the history right...Kudos

Blockbuster and Record Braker
hamfah17 October 2013
After watching the theatrical trailer of Waar a month or so ago, I was extremely excited about watching this big budget, action movie. Its not everyday that a slick looking film comes out of Pakistan.

However, after sitting through the nearly 140 minute film, I felt Proud and Don't really expected that it will be a Blockbuster and record broker Movie of Era and A solid stand to our Country and Film Industry as well.

The cinematography is Marvelous, with some Extra ordinary action sequences which was never been scened before in our Films.

It will take Revolution to Pakistani cinema after a long time. The signs are positive, but there is still a long way to go.

waar; make is really good.
amjadsohayl20 October 2013
I am really a film lover. But First time I saw a Pakistani film that is incredible to see. Although it is hard to describe it in few lines. But the director did his job to his best and available sources. Some scenes are very awesome and remarkable. One could imagine that it could be a Hollywood standard film. The make of the film, made the WAAR first film in Pakistan history that will break all previous records in Pakistani cinema.DOP is really good. Aerial scenes are credit of the director. There are some weaknesses but could ignore it.I believe that Director Mr. Bilal will do his best next time. And we will see his abilities soon. It is revival of the Pakistani cinema. Houseful tags are hanging outside the cinema gates. I give the credit to all the WAAR team. who gave the Pakistani people a fresh stance after long time. And have the good wishes to all, those made it possible. Especially thanks to ARY and its efforts for Pakistani cinema.

Cinematography only thing that was good
riaz981-987-24768520 May 2014
I'm not sure why this is being hailed the best movie ever made in Pakistan. I feel there are quite a few Pakistani movies that are better than this. Yes this has Shaan and yes this movie seems to have a big budget backing it. The only plus points in this movie is Shaan and cinematography. The acting is pretty average, for a Pakistani movie I am not sure why everyone in this speaks English. Even the terrorists. The script is quite shallow. Action sequences at some points are not detailed and there are some places where they just don't make sense. I think the ratings are because of the type of advertising that was done for this movie. Otherwise, script and plot-wise, this a below average movie. Unless you are just blindly nationalistic and forcefully say it is the best movie ever made... I would say Bol and Khudah Kay Liye were top class compared to this.

"Waar" An Epic & Unapologetically Awesome Movie
aakhan4518 October 2013
Considering the limitations and trends in local cinema Waar is truly a masterpiece. It outclasses most of Bollywood's action movies and is even better than some Hollywood Movies (Mind you if you are a fan of Hollywood action movies like Expendables etc. than believe me Waar is way better than any such movies). Though the dialogues and script had some flaws and weak points especially in connecting scenes but overall its a must watch. One may argue that the story is not new but believe me its execution is something that is new for this part of the world. On the other hand it also had some scenes that were outstanding, exceptional, mind blowing and superb. The action, the cinematography, acting and direction were outstanding. Action, Thrill, Drama, Humor and a little romance.... name anything that a movie should have in it and you will find each n everything in this movie. For me it is 9/10 (-1 for some minor flaws in script, story and connecting scenes). I would highly recommend that it is a must watch movie but plzzz don't wait for torrents and pirated copies of this movie go and watch it in cinemas near you as I believe we all should support such projects by contributing our bit.

11/10 for effort, 10/10 for a Pakistani movie & 7/10 if seen as 'any' movie
gashtmali20 October 2013
Wasn't expecting much when my family entered the theater. The opening sequence however blew us away and set the pace for the rest of the movie! This is far and away the best Pakistani movie ever made. It is also way way superior to any fare produced by the (not so) friendly neighborhood 'bollywood'. Here is a story with a beginning, a middle and an end; the characters do not break out into impromptu song with everybody falling into step for a quick dance and the fights are actually choreographed. The story moves on at a fast clip with only a couple of scenes that could have been edited for brevity.

The odd lecture notwithstanding, the screenplay is well conceived, timely and topical. The movie however would have been more realistic in Urdu with English subtitles for the intended international audience. Bilal Lashari has set the bar high, now it is up to the industry to step up and give us more movies we can watch and be proud of.

An American Review
siamese_aphina23 August 2014
This movie was OK by American standards. Not deserving of a 9.1 as is the current review at the time I wrote this. I appreciate the attempt and enjoyed the movie overall. Most Americans will most likely see this movie as cheesy or B Grade but that is not to say they would view it as a bad movie. There is some subtle art here that makes me wish I knew the culture a little bit better so that I could fully appreciate. What really gave the movie some weight was that it was based on true events. To see the problems of terrorism through another cultures eyes would do the average American some good. Hope to see more movies coming from the same director. I recommend this movie for anyone wanting to learn about the fight that the Islamic country of Pakistan has with terrorism or who wants to sample the culture.

Direction, Acting & Action....
sirfahad91117 October 2013
EPIC!!... Worth watching & was worth waiting 3 years 4 it(after the trailer)... Da age of Gujjars & Dogers sort of movies in Pakistan is at an end.... 1st "Khuda K Liyay" then "Bol" and now "Waar", truly a marked difference in Lollywood mentality... A crystal clear picture of likely events prevailing in Pakistan ... Dark clouds and nightmares of this country & the efforts by each and every soul here to clear it... Patriotism & Devotion at its highest level is shown.... Top class actors of Pakistan ShowbizZz industry take the movie to an exceptionally different level.... True enemies of Pakistan are indirectly referred to as well ... Glamour, Money and Arsenal is posed in true color...

A story based on true events that happened in Pakistan... and how Pakistani Nation is facing the war on terror...

A True Inspiration for all Pakistanis... I was feeling more proud when I came out of the Cinema... Felt even better after seeing hundreds waiting outside for the next show... This is the appreciation for this extra- ordinary effort from The Great Shaan, Shamoon, Hamza, Ayesha and Meesha... And of-course Bilal Lashari - The Architect of New Pakistani Cinema...

Great Visuals Effects, Scenic Photography, Superb Dialogues, Good Sound Effects, Excellent Acting & Spectacular Sequences makes WAAR "A Must Watch"... Quite Comparable to any Hollywood Stuff... The Gunship Helicopters, ammunition, action, thrill... were just WAOOO.....!!! A complete Entertainment Package for almost everyone...

Brilliant Movie, look forward to more of the same.
rafiq_rule26 October 2013
Wow, what a movie, brilliant acting - this is the rebirth of Pakistani Cinema, the action scenes brilliantly choreographed. Shaan at last a project suitable for this big an actor. Ayesha and Meesha also brilliant, also Ali Azmat and Shamoon were also excellent.

The plot is how the local terrorists are linked up with foreign espionage agencies, Shaan plays Major Mujtaba, and Army Officer who has come back from retirement, because he is the only Special Forces guy with the experience to apprehend the bad guys.

Top marks and more of the same for Pakistani Cinema.

This is going to change the future of Pakistani cinema.

Overall 10/10 for acting

10/10 for acting.

Awesome Movie
handsome_devil8627 October 2013
Pakistan had made a huge progress in the film Industry.

This is a must watch movie. The Special Effects And Animation Used In The Movie Is Topnotch And Plays A Very Vital Role In Scene Building. The Helicopter Scenes And The Blasts Which Are Shown At The Operation Stage Are Just Amazing And Very Close To Reality, You Can Not Feel That Those Scenes Are Done In Post Production Phase.

The Supporting Cast also Played their Role Very Efficiently.

As A Whole Waar Is A Brilliantly Made Action Packed Big Budget Patriotic Pakistani Feature Film Which Leaves You With Just A Single Word "WOW". A Must Watch !! My Rating 10/10 !!

An awesome depiction of real events!!!
nothing_is_perfect28 October 2013
From direction to Acting , from sound quality to visual effects , from script to delivery it's a mark of film-making!!! it also gives you an insight about the nation which suffered the most in terms of assets and men in this was against terrorism!!! 140 minutes running time, you will not find yourself inattentive towards the screen at any time. The film is a story of dedication, emotion , sincerity, passion and patriotism!!! one can not recommend a better

movie giving insight of how Pakistan suffered in this was against terrorism than Waar!!! hope those who label Pakistan as a terrorist state would find it helpful as an antidote of their venom!!!

Totally away from reality!
maulikoct-591-41850913 July 2014
I watched the movie with a great expectations after rave reviews and praise from friends! I heard a great things about its action sequences and storyline! But, watching movie resulted into sheer disappointment. Yes, this movie had great production value and great performances, the storyline is totally compromised and totally away from reality. The movie very well captures the emotions of common Pakistanis, but it totally misguides us. As always, the movie shows that India is behind all our problems and we are totally innocent. All the problems have been imported from outside. I believe that unless we will live in such ignorance and do not take full responsibility, we would not be able to address the actual problem our nation faces. Coming back to the movie, the performances, screenplay, camera-work and direction is one of the best I have seen in Lollywood for long time. But, the story is totally fictional and gives wrong message to nation.

WAAR - the most important movie..
murtazaaly8427 October 2013
Since i first saw the trailer of this movie i knew it will be massive.. not because it was based on true events, not because it has Shaan, Ali Azmat, not because it was directed by Bilal Lashari but specifically because of the subject of this movie, it was not just an important one but a delicate one too and had to be handled carefully and tell you what it was not just handled carefully but beautifully too..

Acting, direction, dialogues, cast, music, editing, cinematography everything was just too good, halfway through the movie i had to remind myself that i am watching a Pakistani movie just because i have never seen such spectacular aerial shots and breathtaking camera work in a Pakistani movie before.

Everyone justified their roles, two thumbs up to Ali Azmat,Meesha Shafi,Hamza Abbasi and Ayesha Khan.A very strong performance from Shamoon Abbasi too.

and Shaan wowww,i think now we should all understand why is he in almost every Pakistani movie these days.. I dare say Pakistan film industry does not have a better actor / personality than him at the moment..

Just one little thing that bothers me is that the use of English language (in some scenes) in the movie was not all that necessary particularly because this is the movie which should reach every Pakistani and i guess a complete Urdu movie would be a lot easier to understand.

Finally, i would rank it 8/10. and urge you all to go and watch it, i can assure you that you will come out satisfied and proud.

Thankyou Bilal Lashari what a wonderful thing you have done for Pakistani Cinema and not just that, you have also shed light on a very important aspect of war on terror in Pakistan in a very charismatic way.A big well done to you and your team. Pakistan Zindabad.

Are People Blind or Just Dumb
greaper_8917 February 2014
This movie has been afforded an atrociously high rating that is not in the least warranted, for was it warranted, this movie would surpass the likes of The Prestige, Blood Diamond, The Gladiator, 12 Angry Men and all the rest of the IMDb top 250.

Unfortunately this is simply not the case. I am a Pakistani, and while this movie deserves respect as a product of our local movie industry, it simply is decidedly average when it comes to objective cinematic criticism.

Bilal Lashari should not even attempt to tie shoelaces for Nolan, Spielberg, Aronofsky or any of Hollywoods good directors for he simply has not the ability. The cinematographers should really commit never to assaulting audiences with their talents ever again, for apart from a couple of sequences the camera work consisted of dramatic closeups reminiscent of Star Plus dramas rather than a feature length production.

The acting was bearable from a portion of the cast whereas some dabblers who existed to give this film commercial appeal ( take a bow Ali Azmat and Meesha Shafi) were completely out of their depth. The special effects while considerably above par as far as Pakistani cinema is concerned were the work of 2nd grade drop outs when compared to modern Hollywood cinema, often looking decidedly cheap and cheesy. Add to this an average plot with its fair share of holes and you have the masterpiece that has our local audience raving to the point of hysteria.

The movie has a decent soundtrack and some good performances, however for a serious watcher and not a simple patriot, this movie was a waste of both time and money.

Great movie!
rockingguy22016 October 2013
No matter whether you agree with the story line narrated in movie or not, WAAR is one brilliant effort by the young film maker, Bilal Lashari and his supporters. It is truly a new face of Pakistani cinema and in our opinion this could be Pakistan's official entry for Oscars. (Fingers Crossed for the next year nominations) Coming to the acting, Shaan has won the show along with Hamza Ali Abbasi, who impressed the audience with his amazing character. Ayesha Khan who played the role of an agent brilliantly, can also be seen doing some action sequences in the movie. In negative roles, Shamoon Abbasi and Meesha Shafi are worth watching. While frequently swearing words by Meesha Shafi entertain a large number of audience, few of the viewers get irritated by them.

As the characters in the movie mostly talk in English, it might not be able to get great response among the masses in Pakistan and recover its cost which is exaggerated to 2 Million USD by the promoters.

Great dialogues done justice by some equally great acting! Must watch!
khummy17 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
In the current turmoil Pakistan is going through, this movie was direly needed. The 8 pm blame-game by politicians and anchors, the bias of a few of the news groups and what they portray on their channels had left the nation confused. This movie clears a lot of that confusion in the common man's mind regarding our friends and foes and the evil within.

Without spoiling it for the potential viewers, I can just say that despite the storyline being controversial for a few schools of thought, the script was impeccable and the dialogues absolutely flawless. Add Shan Shahid's and Shamoon's effortless acting, and Ayesha Khan's amazing dialogue delivery, and you have a masterpiece for viewing.

Despite big channels not promoting it because of its storyline being against one of our neighboring countries, its doing absolutely great at cinemas..and deservingly so.

My only issue - more Urdu wouldn't have hurt to appeal to the masses. Urdu subscripts would be nice too.

9 out of 10 from my side.
