Stars: Julian Sands, Charlotte Hope, Aoibhe O’Flanagan, Pippa Winslow, Philipp Christopher | Written and Directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen
What are the chances that two films called The Piper, both horror films involving the legend of The Pied Piper, would come out in the same year? And that both would be hard to see? While I haven’t seen the one starring Liz Hurley yet, I did get a chance to see the one written and directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen and featuring the late Julian Sands in one of his last roles.
It opens with the voice of Gustafson (Sands) on the phone trying to talk Katherine out of destroying the last copy of her Concerto for Children. She tells him “It is evil, no one must ever know about it” before rushing outside to try and burn it in her fire pit. But something with glowing eyes intervenes, and she burns while the manuscript survives.

The director of In the Company of Men continues his run of terrible films with this awfully acted, ungripping drama
In the most dismaying possible way, Neil Labute has done it again. The dramatist and film-maker who gave us the 90s toxic masculinity classic In the Company of Men and the interesting and undervalued Samuel L Jackson thriller Lakeview Terrace in 2008, seems now to be going through a period of churning out exploitation content like a hack-for-hire. Last year we had the dismal revenge horror House of Darkness; now it’s this terrible home invasion thriller, with awful acting, clunking dialogue cues and drearily ungripping action and suspense sequences, along with a ChatGPT-ish title.
Maggie Q plays Tess, a military veteran who has seen action in Iraq and is now a recovering alcoholic struggling with a return to civilian life. She agrees to come to her sister’s bachelorette party...

"Screaming is not going to keep us alive! Listen to me – and maybe that will..." Quiver Distribution has revealed an official trailer for an indie home invasion thriller titled Fear the Night, arriving to watch later in July. Filmmaker Neil Labute has been making quite a comeback recently, with two films out last year (Out of the Blue and House of Darkness) and this next one already ready for release as well. He's probably got a few others in the works, too. In this film - eight women attend a wild bachelorette party at a remote farmhouse in the California hills. They are interrupted by the arrival of masked intruders who surround the place and begin shooting arrows. One partygoer—Tess, a military veteran who is fighting her addictions and her difficulty at fitting in with other people—leads the women in making a stand against the attackers as they fight back.

It's only been a few weeks since Kate Bosworth and Justin Long confirmed their engagement, but it appears the couple have already tied the knot. During the May 9 episode of Long's "Life Is Short" podcast (where the engagement news was officially announced), the "Barbarian" actor casually referred to Bosworth as his "now-wife" while he recalled filming the 2022 horror flick in Bulgaria.
"I was there while I was like really falling in love with my now-wife," said Long, seemingly confirming the two have wed. "And she came to visit, and I had never been comfortable with . . . set visits, I was never crazy about. I liked separating the relationship, but I loved having her there, and we just had the most magical time."
Then on May 31, People reported via sources that Long and Bosworth secretly married in a spur-of-the-moment wedding ceremony not long after their engagement - which, according to Page Six,...

Justin Long and Kate Bosworth are married! Long revealed the happy news on the May 9 episode of his podcast “Life is Short”.
Recalling his time filming “Barbarian”, Long said that he started falling in love with his now-wife while in Bulgaria, where the pair were shooting the horror film.
“I was there while I was like really falling in love with my now-wife,” he told guest Kyra Sedgwick. “She came to visit, and I had never been comfortable with… set visits. I like to separate the relationship… But, yeah, I loved having her there and we just had the most magical time.”
The 44-year-old added, “It helped me having her there. She’d help me with scenes. It was the best.”

During a new episode of his Life Is Short podcast that was released Tuesday, Long was joined by Bosworth, where the pair confirmed that they got engaged earlier this year after the Barbarian star popped the question. “We are embarking on a new chapter,” Bosworth, 40, said on the episode. Long, 44, then said, “People have been asking because Catherine wore a ring that I gave to her when I asked her — well, not when I asked her, but shortly after I asked her — to marry me.”

Kate Bosworth and Justin Long have confirmed their engagement - and revealed the sweet and personal way he proposed. After 40-year-old "Blue Crush" star Bosworth debuted a 10-carat ring at the Vanity Fair Oscars party on March 12, People reported on March 24 that multiple sources said the couple are set to tie the knot. Now, in the April 4 edition of his podcast, "Life Is Short with Justin Long," the couple wanted to share the news, themselves, through a "loving conversation."
Long said he had a proposal planned around Bosworth's birthday in January but said a month before that "things changed." Instead, "It was a moment where it just felt so organic and it felt connected to something very, very deeply, profoundly personal that we were going through, like, a real life change, and so it came out in a very organic way," he said of popping the question. Justin Long has been on a horror hot streak thanks to Barbarian and House of Darkness, and he’ll continue playing around in the genre with a role in the new “Goosebumps” series.
Long will be a series regular, playing “Nathan Bratt, the new schoolteacher who develops a terrifying connection to a decades-old supernatural murder.”
After two movies, the brand new live-action “Goosebumps” TV series based on R.L. Stine’s bestselling books will bring the tales back to the small screen, we recently learned.
It sounds like the series will have a similar storyline to 2015’s hit movie, which adapted many of Stine’s iconic books in one fell swoop. Here’s the project’s plot synopsis…

Labute’s quarter-baked script tries but fails to satirise male attitudes, letting down his actors Justin Long and Kate Bosworth
Writer-director Neil Labute has created some genuinely challenging work for cinema and theatre, including the 90s toxic-masculinity classic In the Company of Men. But he takes his eye off the ball sometimes, and in this film the ball is so far outside Labute’s eyeline, he might as well be outside the stadium trying to remember where he parked the car.
House of Darkness is a tedious quarter-baked straight-to-video revenge horror set-up that is sort of – but not really – satirising male attitudes. Justin Long plays Hap, a guy who has just picked up Mina (Kate Bosworth), a young woman in a bar, assuring her that he is “separated” from his wife. This demure, white-clad young siren asks Hap to drive her home, which turns out to be a weird Castle...

“Tough guy with heart of gold” is the cliché that provides the gist to “The Enforcer,” and nothing much turns up to refresh or complicate that hoary hook. This criminal-underworld thriller benefits from Antonio Banderas’ star charisma as a veteran mob strong-arm who turns against his own organization in order to rescue an imperiled teen. Richard Hughes’ feature directorial debut also elevates matters somewhat with a slick and stylish presentation. But the results remain too hogtied by original “Point Break” scribe W. Peter Iliff’s routine, elemental screenplay to rise above the level of disposable genre fodder.

It’s always fun to find one of your favorite actors in a horror movie. It’s especially fun to notice an actor in an upcoming horror movie, move to check their IMDb and notice a litany of other horror movies you’d maybe forgotten they starred in. But to go and watch all of said actors horror movies in sequential order? I know, I know. Somebody better stop me because I’m a wild person with no regard for danger. C’mon, let’s get nuts.
Justin Long is the subject of this completist exercise in honor of his not one but two recently released horror movies: Barbarian (In theaters) and House of Darkness (Currently available for rent on VOD). I’ve always considered him an underrated and charismatic actor with the ability to walk the line between “cool guy” and “total dork” as they are so often the same in real life.

Neil Labute films tend to have similar characteristics. The gifted playwright has a way with words, so his scripts are smart and snappy. He also has an interest in the way that men and women interact and how caustic the battle of the sexes can be. His films are often filled with unlikeable characters engaging in abhorrent behaviors and he loves dark humor, which goes hand in hand with his proclivity for exploring controversial and upsetting subject matter.
Labute’s latest, House of Darkness, contains nearly all of these elements. The film opens with a man (Justin Long) and a woman (Kate Bosworth) arriving at her isolated country home, which is quickly revealed to be a mansion. They’re relative strangers: they met at a bar downtown, he’s given her a ride home and she invites him in.

Famous exes Drew Barrymore and Justin Long reunited and reflected on their relationship. Long appeared on the season three premiere of "The Drew Barrymore Show" on Sept. 12, and the duo took the opportunity to talk about their past relationship and how much they've changed in the years since.
The show shared a clip of Long's appearance on its Twitter account. "I feel like we've been through so much together," Barrymore explained in the video, wiping tears from her eyes. "When we used to talk and FaceTime I was always like, 'You know, I've really grown up, Justin.' I always wanted to prove to you what a different person I was than when we dated."
Long said, "You were the best." Barrymore continued, "We had so much fun but we were more hedonistic. A little more immature. We would get together, we would break up. It was chaos. It was hella fun.

The eyes can grow accustomed to the dark. Still, the central theme of House of Darkness will become visible to most viewers too soon. Maybe that’s because while director Neil Labute tries to infuse a sense of mystery into his first horror film since Nicolas Cage’ ill-fated remake of The Wicker Man (2006). He’s hampered by a script that makes it all too obvious what’s going on. He needn’t have bothered. Though the gothic atmosphere and coy dialogue are fun, they don’t really create any mystery for horror fans who can readily guess where this one night stand from hell is headed. The film opens as a car makes its late-night way towards a remote country estate, the lavish but rundown kind...

Plot: A man thinks his mysterious date will be another casual hook-up. While getting acquainted, their flirtation turns playful, sexy and sinister. Hoping to get lucky, his luck may have just run out.
Story: House of Darkness is a slowburn in every sense of the word. If you’re going into this expecting a lot to happen, then you may be disappointed. Writer and Director Neil Labute ramps up the tension as the story unfolds and trusts the audience to have some patience. But this story of a man trying to get laid, isn’t quite what you would expect it to be.
The opening credits, with red font, while a piano and strings play in the background felt like an Old Hammer Horror film. It really helps set up the gothic aesthetic right from the jump. In many ways, this is a modern story told through the lens of the past.

The modern dating scene can be murder. You meet someone at an event, a club, a bar ... you never know if you're seeing the real them. You likely aren't. What's lying underneath the surface of your boozed-up interlocutor? Are they kind? Better than you're seeing? Or more likely, are they worse? And for women meeting men, the latter's undoubtedly a frightening potential outcome. "House of Darkness" centers itself entirely around an ironic subversion of that fearful commonplace situation. Here, a man drives a woman home from a bar to her isolated mansion and finds himself beset by powerful women, the womanizer becoming the hunted late-night target.
While horror fans may better know writer-director-playwright Neil Labute for his ill-fated "The Wicker Man" remake, relationship games, power, and their consequences are frequent themes of his wider oeuvre. "House of Darkness" fits well within that vein, but here with a twist inspired by Dracula's long-fabled brides.

Neil Labute is no stranger to horror. As he says, some audiences have called his infamous work from the '90s, including "In The Company of Men" and "Your Friends & Neighbors," basically horror movies. Labute often portrays the worst in people and crafts uncomfortable experiences, making his instincts seem just right for the genre.
The playwright and filmmaker took his biggest leap into the genre realm with "The Wicker Man" remake. The not-so-great experience, which had a lot of cooks in the kitchen, didn't turn Labute off from horror. For years, he worked on SyFy's "Van Helsing" and once even adapted "Dracula" for the stage. Now, Labute is back with another horror yarn, "House of Darkness." It's a gothic mystery, which features actor Justin Long continuing his hot-streak of playing despicable characters.
Recently, Labute talked to us about crafting his latest film and how his stories and audiences continue to evolve.

Imagine showing up for an Airbnb rental, only to discover that another guest is already there. What would you do? Check in anyway and hope for the best? Or take the mix-up as a sign and get the heck out? In “Barbarian,” Tess (Georgina Campbell) makes the wrong decision. It’s already late, and she decides to stay — this despite the fact that the stranger sharing the house is played by Bill Skarsgård (the actor who embodied Pennywise in the recent “It” remake). For audiences, this casting is a clue Tess is in for a scary stay. But it would be wrong to think you have “Barbarian” figured out.
For Tess, there are plenty of other red flags in the way her unexpected roommate behaves. Should she really believe they double-booked the same place in a derelict Detroit neighborhood? Or is there another reason he’s there? What if he...

This past Labor Day weekend looked like it could be one of the worst in recent memory. Thankfully, it was salvaged by National Cinema Day and the overwhelming success of “Top Gun: Maverick.” Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
This coming weekend, those recovering from the throes of awards love out of Venice and Telluride might be prepping for TIFF in Toronto, but everyone else will have a few new options in theaters, just nothing being released particularly wide.
First up, there’s Zach Cregger’s horror film “Barbarian” starring Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgard and Justin Long. It’s a pretty crazy film that starts out as a simple high-concept surrounding two strangers stuck sharing the same Airbnb, which then turns into something quite different.

A new cinematic drinking game has arrived. It’s a doozy, too, when taking a shot every time writer-director Neil Labute uses an intertitle demarking time in Out of the Blue means you’ll probably pass out before Connor’s (Ray Nicholson) inevitable plan to kill Marilyn’s (Diane Kruger) abusive husband is floated, let alone put in motion. Many are arbitrary. Some are exacting. Few have narrative relevance beyond telling us something we already know. I’m thus unsure what the point of using so many is, beyond earning an incredulous laugh—some bookend thirty seconds of footage that provide nothing of consequence anyway. If a character mentions that an event will occur on Tuesday, we don’t need to see “Tuesday” before transitioning to said event. It’s implicit.
My guess is that Labute merely hopes to elicit mood. Film noir plays in the background of many scenes and Marilyn,...
