- [Adam Douglas has been arrested as he tried to flee the scene of the murder. Hathaway is interviewing him at the police station]
- DS James Hathaway: Where were you planning on going with thirty quid and an out-of-date passport? As far as master-plans go, it's pretty stupid.
- Adam Douglas: *I'm* the one studying Classics at Oxford and *you're* the one working in this toilet, so just watch who you're calling stupid.
- DS James Hathaway: We're *both* in the toilet, Adam.
- [Hathaway grins]
- DS James Hathaway: [whispers gleefully] But I can leave.
- [to make his point, Hathaway opens the door and walks out of the room]
- DS James Hathaway: [after showing DI Lewis whodunit, where "it" is attempted vehicular manslaughter] This is the bit where you say "Well done Hathaway", and I shrug, modestly.
- DS James Hathaway: Amy's body was in the garden, two floors below the room she was sleeping in. The cause of death is a blow to the head or the head hitting a rock.
- DI Robert Lewis: Suicide?
- DS James Hathaway: [Dryly] Dr. Hobson is consulting the cadaver even now.
- DI Robert Lewis: You're very chipper this morning, James.
- DS James Hathaway: I'm crying inside.
- [Caroline Eagleton, tutor of a female student who has just been murdered, tells Lewis about another student who had been harrassing the girl several months earlier and who was only spared being suspended because the girl pleaded his case. Lewis learns his identity - one of those who was present when the body was found]
- Caroline Eagleton: If it turns out to be him, may God forgive me because I'll never forgive myself.
- [Caroline Eagleton hands Lewis a file]
- Caroline Eagleton: Here - Proctor's report, statements. The boy's name...
- DI Robert Lewis: Adam Douglas.
- Caroline Eagleton: You know him?
- DI Robert Lewis: [snarls] Yeah. And don't be too *quick* to forgive yourself.
- Chief Superintendent Jean Innocent: What's the matter with him? Not our lovely Laura, I hope. Honestly, sometimes I just want to bang their heads together. Two grown-up single people who obviously like each other. Don't you think, Hathaway?
- DS James Hathaway: I try not to, ma'am.
- Chief Superintendent Jean Innocent: Oh, you're hopeless!
- Chief Superintendent Jean Innocent: You should talk some sense into him, Hathaway.
- DS James Hathaway: Unless of course I agree with him, Ma'am.
- Chief Superintendent Jean Innocent: You're supposed to drag Lewis out of the dark ages, not join him there.
- DI Robert Lewis: [to Bethan] If you think of anything else you shouldn't say, I hope you'll say it to me.
- Dane Wise: [after attacking Hathaway in the dark] Sorry, I thought you were breakin' in.
- DS James Hathaway: No, just a social call.
- DS James Hathaway: Could Ketanex have contributed to Amy's death?
- Alex Gansa: [Pausing to stare at Hathaway] Sorry, you're an odd policeman.
- Alex Gansa: [Hathaway makes a scoffing noise] I mean, yo-you're odd for a policeman. I-is this a second career perhaps?
- DS James Hathaway: We're talking about you.
- Shauna Malin: I really don't want to speculate.
- DS James Hathaway: Sure you do. Go on, knock yourself out.
- DI Robert Lewis: Lurking around doors, like a...
- DS James Hathaway: Yeti?
- DI Robert Lewis: No, not a Yeti.
- Shauna Malin: I really don't want to speculate.
- DS James Hathaway: Yes you do. Go on, knock yourself out.
- [Encouraging]
- DS James Hathaway: [Clarifying] So Jack is your boyfriend?
- Karen Wilde: [Being Sarcastic] No, I'll screw anything that moves.
