We have learned the sad news this week that prolific horror author Ray Garton, who wrote nearly 70 books over the course of his career, has passed away after a battle with lung cancer.
Ray Garton was 61 years old.
Stephen King tweets, “I’m hearing that Ray Garton, horror novelist and friend, died yesterday. This is sad news, and a loss to those who enjoyed his amusing, often surreal, posts on Twitter.”
Ray Garton’s novels include Seductions, Darklings, Live Girls, Night Life, and Crucifax in the 1980s, followed in later decades by output including A Dark Place: The Story of a True Haunting, Trade Secrets, The New Neighbor, Lot Lizards, Dark Channel, Shackled, The Girl in the Basement, The Loveliest Dead, Ravenous, Bestial, and most recently, Trailer Park Noir.

“You never know if they like you for who you are or what you are,” Anna Nicole Smith once said before she passed away from an accidental drug overdose in 2007. The endearing model, actress, and television personality often found herself a subject of misinterpretation and ridicule when she wanted to taste life, be loved, and make people smile. Thankfully, a new biopic, Hurricanna, is now filming and aims to show the sweeter side of the beloved blonde bombshell. A first look at Sylvia Hoeks as Smith is here, prompting fans to double-take before venturing into the Uncanny Valley.
Hoeks stars as Anna Nicole Smith in the upcoming biopic, with Holly Hunter, Mark Duplass, and Nicholas Hamilton. Francesca Gregorini directs from a script by Rachel Sarnoff and Matt Sarnoff, with the story focusing on Smith’s final days before her untimely death at 39. A biopic of model, actress and TV personality Anna Nicole Smith is in the works, we can reveal.
Oscar winner Holly Hunter (Succession) is in talks to co-star in the project called Hurricanna, which Sierra/Affinity is launching for the virtual EFM.
Glow star Betty Gilpin was until very recently in discussions to play the model, actress and TV personality but the actress has just had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.
The movie will chart how in an attempt to save Smith’s life, her devoted therapist, Khristine (Hunter), embarks on a 36-hour odyssey in which she unknowingly delivers the fatal blow. Producers describe the project as exploring the “immense hurricane-like force that was Anna Nicole Smith, and the fateful string of events that led Anna to destroy everything in her path, including herself and those closest to her.”

With twists that you might expect from a M. Night Shyamalan project, the legal scare facing AppleTV+, the director and Servant creator Tony Basgallop may still keep haunting them.
Despite an order today from a federal judge tossing out a copyright suit over the Lauren Ambrose and Toby Kebbell starring series from the Tim Cook-run company’s streamer, the court docket could have a new master sooner rather than later.
“Today’s ruling is disappointing, but not surprising,” said The Truth About Emanuel director Francesca Gregorini on Thursday over the dismissal with prejudice of her January filed lawsuit over the inspiration for the already renewed Servant series.
“The balance of power in the entertainment industry has always favored powerful men and institutions,” Gregorini asserts in what is the third time Shyamalan has been tainted with creative sticky fingers over the years. “Their ultimate goal is to silence anyone whose...

The streaming space is a crowded one. Between Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Apple TV+ and the 2020 launches of NBCUniversal’s Peacock and WarnerMedia’s HBO Max, the competition for your money and attention is fierce.
Now Disney has made the splashiest entrance into the streaming landscape with Disney+. The service’s library features Disney live-action and animated classics, and content from Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and National Geographic.
Disney+ is more than just the greatest hits from the House of Mouse. The service is set to roll out original feature films, TV shows, and documentaries. For instance, more episodes of The Clone Wars season 7 are set to arrive this month.

Though it’s yet to launch in the UK and other parts of Europe, Disney+ has already proven itself to be a major player in North America – thanks in large part to its suite of digital content, which ranges from Marvel Studios to Star Wars and everything in between.
And much like its online peers, Disney+ is still to roll out a fresh wave of content for April 2020, beginning with Doctor Dolittle on April 1st – not to be confused with the recent remake starring McU mainstay Robert Downey Jr.
What’s more, April marks Earth Month, so you can expect plenty of eco-friendly documentaries to air via National Geographic. Indeed, it’s fair to say that the Disney+ lineup has fast become one of the most diverse on the market. From new episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars to age-old classics like Doctor Dolittle, there’s really something for everyone.

Any parent hoping to watch a David Lynch movie with the whole family is in luck starting in April. Disney+ has announced Lynch’s 1999 Disney movie “The Straight Story” will be available to stream next month, which is exciting news as the movie has been hard to come by in recent years on streaming. “The Straight Story” is available to purchase on YouTube and Amazon, but Disney+ subscribers will be able to stream the biographical drama as part of their membership staring April 3.
“The Straight Story” is an outlier in Lynch’s challenging and experimental filmography, with the majority of his movies only be suitable for adult viewers. Co-written by John Roach and Mary Sweeney, “The Straight Story” tells the true story of Alvin Straight, who made headlines in 1994 for journeying across Iowa and Wisconsin on a lawn mower. The cast includes Richard Farnsworth, Sissy Spacek, and regular Lynch collaborator Harry Dean Stanton.

M. Night Shyamalan and Apple have been sued by a female director for copyright infringement over their Apple+ show “Servant,” which the plaintiff claims stole its premise from her 2013 film and rewrote it through a male gaze.
Created by Tony Basgallop with Shyamalan as an executive producer, “Servant” follows a couple that has formed an emotional bond with a doll created to resemble their dead infant daughter and the nanny the couple hired to take care of it. Basgallop is also named as a defendant in the lawsuit, as are the rest of the show’s executive producers and the show’s production studios, including Shyamalan’s Blinding Edge Pictures.

Just over two months since its debut, AppleTV+ finally hit the Hollywood big time today with its first high-profile lawsuit.
Along with director M. Night Shyamalan, the streaming arm of the Tim Cook-run tech behemoth is facing claims that its Tony Basgallop created Servant series lifts a little too liberally from Francesca Gregorini’s 2013 film The Truth About Emanuel.
“Servant is a wholesale copy of Plaintiff Francesca Gregorini’s 2013 feature film The Truth About Emanuel,” declares a copyright infringement and injunction seeking lawsuit filed today in federal court in California (read it here).
“As demonstrated by the long list of key parallels catalogued in Section III(C) of this Complaint, the misappropriation is not a mere borrowed premise, idea or story,” the jury seeking and graphically detailed complaint adds of the film that opened at the Sundance Film Festival seven years ago. “Mr. Shyamalan has gone so far as...

Everyone’s favourite ‘90s horror book series is coming to life.
The first trailer for the long-awaited Goosebumps movie just dropped online, and it does not disappoint. Jack Black stars as real-life author R.L. Stine, a paranoid creator of all things ghastly and ghoulish. The new neighbour, played by Dylan Minnette, manages to get into the locked manuscripts of the original books, releasing the hundreds of monsters dreamed up over the years.
The film also stars Halston Sage (Paper Towns) as the niece of R.L., along with Ryan Lee (Super 8), Kumail Nanjiani ("Silicon Valley") and Amy Ryan (Birdman). We spot a few infamous monsters that gave us nightmares as kids, like the ventriloquist dummy and the giant praying mantis. This trailer’s giving us some serious flashbacks to reading around the campfire with a flashlight as kids. Here’s hoping Goosebumps brings the same kind of bump-in-the-night scares as the original book series.

I completely skipped the fourth Pirates of The Caribbean film and my only interest in the fifth film is because of the directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg. They directed a movie called Kon-Tiki, which a must-watch film.
There seems to be some movement on the movie. Disney is looking at talented young British actress Kaya Scodelario for the female lead. Many people know her from the show Skins (UK) or last year's The Maze Runner. She was also in a great indie film The Truth About Emanuel which I saw at Sundance.
Pirates of the Caribbean 5 has been a long-gestating film and from what I remember has had several script rewrites thus far. I can't wait to watch a Rønning and Sandberg film, even if it's Pirates 5. I'm hoping they recapture the magic of the first film, which I love.

The long-delayed trailer for David O’Russell‘s quirky comedy, Accidental Love, has finally dropped, and the fact that it was filmed seven years ago couldn’t be more evident.
Previously titled Nailed, the film tells the story of a waitress (Jessica Biel) who’s ditched by her fiance (James Marsden) when she’s shot with a nail in the head that she doesn’t have the insurance to remove. This leads her to seek the help of a pretty politician, played by a baby calf-looking Jake Gyllenhaal, to reform health care.
Accidental Love is a departure from Russell’s most recent project American Hustle, with the tone feeling like a mix of Bubble Boy and Win a Date with Tad Hamilton. Despite the film’s campiness, you can’t help but imagine what it would’ve done for Biel’s career back when it was made in the 2000s.

Mazed and Confused: Ball’s Lusterless Debut Another Dystopic Ya Derivative
Pretty teenagers that survive the apocalypse are sure going to have it tough. Or maybe all these Ya geared portrayals of life in the reconstruction period wrapped in video game gloss will serve as subconscious instruction manuals for today’s teens that may eventually be tomorrow’s adults dealing with the tail end of human civilization. If that’s the case, perhaps these sanitized depictions are doing more damage by being crafted solely for the delicate palette of today’s teen entertainment sensibilities. As could be predicted, the strongest aspect of visual and digital effects artist Wes Ball’s foray into directing with franchise courting The Maze Runner, are the film’s visual effects. Given the circumstances and the parameters administered, the look of the film is just fine. But, as often is the case with these types of motion pictures,...

★★☆☆☆First unleashed on the festival circuit almost two years ago, it's taken Francesca Gregorini's The Truth About Emanuel (2013) a while to find its way to UK audiences, even now in its Dtv form. Emanuel (Kaya Scodelario) is a teenage girl in a small American suburb who's still broken from the loss of her mother. Living with her father (Alfred Molina) and her stepmother (Frances O'Connor), Emanuel is finding the struggles of teen life all the more challenging with the isolation her loss has caused. However, when a young mother, Linda (Jessica Biel), moves in next-door and is looking for a babysitter, Emanuel seizes the opportunity to meet someone knew and perhaps find the mother figure she's been searching for.

She's best known as Effy on Skins but things are quickly changing for Kaya Scodelario, who's following up her critically-acclaimed turns in Wuthering Heights and The Truth About Emanuel with a role in the hotly-anticipated adaptation of James Dashner's Ya novel The Maze Runner.
Playing Teresa, the only female in the cast, Kaya assured Digital Spy that she was as tough as her co-stars when we visited her on set in Baton Rouge, Louisiana last year.
The film is set in a post-apocalyptic world where a community of teenage boys discover they're all trapped in a maze. Teresa is the first girl to be delivered and she soon develops a special bond with Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) in an attempt to plot an escape.
The sci-fi thriller is being directed by first-timer Wes Ball, who describes the film as Lord of the Flies meets The Hunger Games with an element of Lost.

Persona (Criterion Collection) (Blu-ray/DVD) I have watched all of Criterion's new Blu-ray for Ingmar Bergman's absolute classic, Persona, and will have a more in-depth look at the film tomorrow, but for now let me just say I consider this an essential title for film fans interested in collecting the best cinema has had to offer over the course of its rich history. I only saw Persona for the first time a little over three years ago and was absolutely floored. It's one of those films you don't need to "get" to understand, which I know is confusing. Put, hopefully, more simply, this is a film that's meant to confuse and confound, but it does it in such a way that you never feel you're missing something. Yet, by the end you'll be left enthralled by the images you've witnessed, the story (or lack thereof) you've witnessed, the performances,...

Italian Writer/Director Francesca Gregorin’s The Truth About Emanuel is an intimate psychodrama with a small cast, a Twilight Zonish twist, and a whole lot of weirdness. Kaya Scodelario plays Emanuel, a teen whose mother died in childbirth and she, as her first-person voiceover narration reveals, blames herself for the death. She’s now a teen and has spent her life traumatized by the event. Raised by her doting dad Dennis (Alfred Molina), Emanuel is dramatic and remote, but she emerges from her shadow occasionally to annoy her bewildered new stepmom Janice (Frances O’Connor), who sees Emanuel for who she is and is growing tired of Dennis creating excuses for her. The story focuses on the lead-up to Emanuel’s 18th birthday. She dates a guy named Claude (Aneurin Barnard) for a while, but takes an immediate interest in Linda (Jessica Biel) who moves in next door with...

The Truth About Emanuel is as confusing a film as it is a beautiful one. The movie spins a strange tale of 17-year-old Emanuel (Kaya Scodelario) when she forms a unlikely bond with a young mother, Linda (Jessica Biel), who moves in next door. The girl is disturbed by her upcoming birthday, which is also the unhappy anniversary of her mother’s death. Linda is troubled by a mysterious past. The Truth About Emanuel
Written and directed by Francesca Gregorini
USA, 2013
“Reality is overrated,” says the title character of The Truth About Emanuel, quite drily, early in the film. And, indeed, the difference between what’s real and what’s fake, and whether it matters for a person to delineate between the two, is at the core of this suburbia-set story. Unfortunately, when Kaya Scodelario, as the title character, delivers this would-be deep thought to a boy who’s besotted with her, it arrives with a thud. Certainly, she’s a teenager, consumed with guilt at the death of her mother during her birth, but it seems as though Emanuel, both in action and in dialogue, is meant to be a prickly but lovable true-to-life teen, instead of a Movie Teen, which is what she sounds like.

“Reality is overrated,” says the title character of The Truth About Emanuel, quite drily, early in the film. Review: Clichés & Frustration Fill 'The Truth About Emanuel' Starring Jessica Biel & Kaya Scodelario
There is a widely held stereotype that the Sundance Film Festival is just dour, depressing films—dramas about addiction and family dysfunction and infidelity and incest and on and on—and outside of the occasional “Little Miss Sunshine”-type breakout, the festival wouldn’t really hold much interest for a large portion of the viewing public. Of course festivalgoers know this is not the case at all, and if you dig deep enough into any category you’ll find a wide array of films from comedies to dramas to science fiction to any combination thereof. Last year’s U.S. Dramatic competition (known for producing past hits like “Beasts of the Southern Wild” and “Winter’s Bone”) featured a surprising number of comedies, for example, which shows that the programmers are always interested in mixing things up. Unfortunately, if you see enough films at the fest, on occasion you’re...

This weekend, Mark Wahlberg and Taylor Kitsch take on the Taliban in "Lone Survivor," Hercules's origins get a reboot in "The Legend of Hercules," and tensions grow between Meryl Streep and the rest of her dysfunctional family in "August: Osage County."
"Lone Survivor" stars Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Ben Foster, and Emile Hirsch as members of Seal Team 10, who are tasked to bring down Taliban leader, Ahmad Shahd. Based on the 2005 mission "Operation Red Wings," the covert assignment soon gets comprised and the SEALs are ambushed by enemy forces in Afghanistan. Directed by Peter Berg, the film examines the courage and heroism of the brothers in arms.

Perhaps Jessica Biel should stick to interior decorating. Justin Timberlake's ladylove had a bit of a snafu while she was baking up some cinnamon buns Friday, when she mistook one white condiment for another. "I mistook the salt for sugar & these cinnamon bun beauties were so gross! Moral of the day: Don't let looks deceive you! #kitchenconfessions," Biel posted on her WhoSay page Friday, along with a shot of the buns in a pan. Although she had one minor accident in the kitchen, the stunning star rocked when she decorated her dream holiday room, showing off her skills in gorgeous shots on Domaine's website. The Truth About Emanuel star teamed up with the site to create a...

Playing a mom in her new film The Truth About Emanuel stirred up some maternal instincts for Jessica Biel. "Every woman has some kind of intuition of how they'd interact with a child," she told People at the Los Angeles premiere of the film on Wednesday. "I feel kind of comfortable around kids, so I was kind of rolling with that idea," she admitted. Wearing a two-piece lace skirt and cropped top by Giambattista Valli topped with a leather jacket, the 31-year-old - who married Justin Timberlake in a romantic Italian ceremony in October 2012 - says she's open to having kids of her own,...

Jessica Biel opened up at the premiere of her latest film, The Truth About Emanuel, in La on Wednesday night, revealing a side of her we haven't seen before: her maternal instinct. "I think I've probably had it my whole life, I guess," she said during our red carpet interview. The actress arrived in an all-black ensemble, complete with a leather jacket that she told us she's had for years. The sexy look is in complete contrast to her character's personality in the thriller. Jessica plays a protective mother, a role that came naturally to her. "It felt very easy for me to sort of be around that baby and be in the mindset of someone who would have a baby and how you would hold it and touch it and love it and coo at it and change its clothes. It came kind of easy to me; I don't know why.

Jessica Biel may not be a mother yet in real life, but she does play a somewhat deranged and delusional mom in her new flick The Truth About Emanuel. At last night's Hollywood premiere of the movie, Biel dished to us about tapping into her maternal instinct to film with a newborn baby. "I think to make this person, this character, work without being some ridiculous, crazy performance, is to really believe in what she's doing and believe that that is her truth, that baby is her baby and that's what it is," Biel told us. "And so the nurturing element of being a mother, that is really what I tapped into," the gorgeous 31-year-old actress continued. "Because it's like, the...

The new RoboCop trailer is a little low on wow-worthy action set pieces, but a bold plea from Samuel L. For those of us who didn.t get to travel to Sundance back in January (or a handful of festivals since) it.s been a long year waiting to get a look at Francesca Gregorini.s psychological thriller The Truth About Emanuel, which changed its name from the less marketable Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes. Barely anything has been said about the film since its first trailer was released over the summer, but now iTunes Movie Trailers has dropped a brand spanking new and more accessible trailer for the film, along with a couple of release dates. I.m somehow even more interested in this flick, which is odd since these trailers seemingly give away quite a bit of the movie. Perhaps it.s just enough, though. The film will hit theaters on January 10, 2014, almost an entire year after its festival premiere. But seeing as how that will probably...

Back in January at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, many were calling relative newcomer Kaya Scodelario one of the year's big breakouts. Now the trailer for the ominous thriller that put her on the radar is here to creep you out. In "The Truth About Emanuel" (formerly titled "Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes"), Scodelario stars as Emanuel, a 17 year old girl whose mother died in childbirth. She becomes infatuated with Linda (Jessica Biel), the young mother living next door who bears an uncanny resemblance to her own deceased mom. But rather than embrace the role of maternal figure for Emanuel, Linda appears to be hiding a mystery of her own. When Emanuel begins to babysit Linda's infant child, both of their secretive worlds begin to unravel. Directed by Francesca Gregorini, "The Truth About Emanuel" hits VOD on Nov. 26 and begins a limited theatrical run on Jan. 10.

There’s a new trailer for the latest film from Robert De Niro’s shingle, Tribeca Films, and Well Go USA Entertainment. It’s the first trailer to refer to the film by its new title, “The Truth About Emanuel.” When it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it was an Official Selection, earlier this year it was under the title, “Emanuel and The Truth About Fishes.”
The film’s stars include Jessica Biel and Alfred Molina, and it tells the tale of a troubled young woman who becomes obsessed with her neighbor (Biel), who reminds her of her dead mother. The trailer paints the film as a thriller with a “Single White Female” feel to it, but most of the press on the movie is that it’s more of a genre-crossing psychological piece.
On the film’s scope and tone, Tribeca Chief Creative Officer, Geoffrey Gilmore says:...

Formerly titled Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes, the Sundance selected indie The Truth About Emanuel is coming to theaters early next year, just before the 2014 Sundance Film Festival will kick off in Park City, Utah again. Jessica Biel, Kaya Scodelario, Alfred Molina and Frances O’Connor star in the film about the troubled Emanuel who becomes preoccupied with her mysterious new neighbor Linda, bearing a striking resemblance to her dead mother, and their bond grows as they spend more together. It looks like something new for Biel, and Scodelario is clearly going places (she's in The Maze Runner). Watch! Here's the new trailer for The Truth About Emanuel, originally from Apple: Emanuel (Kaya Scodelario), an acerbic but sensitive teen, is on the verge of another birthday—a day she has never cared for since her mother died giving birth to her—when the mysterious Linda (Jessica Biel), a young and hip mother,...

As we recently featured, close relationships on the big screen between mothers and daughters aren't always the healthiest, but what happens when that daughter isn't even real? That's where things begin with the thriller "The Truth About Emanuel" and a new trailer for the oddball tale has dropped online. Starring Jessica Biel and Kaya Scoledario (and you might remember the movie from its original title, "Emanuel And The Truth About Fishes"), the story centers on a troubled 17-year-old girl who babysits her new neighbor Linda's "baby," which is actually a very life-like doll. She goes along with the delusion while befriending the neighbor, who happens to be the spitting image of Emanuel's late mother, and is still mourning the loss of her child (ergo, the doll substitute). And while this is all a potentially interesting premise for a psychological drama, for our money it doesn't quite work. As we noted...

Not many actors can boast having two films out on the same day – but for young Welsh performer Aneurin Barnard that is exactly what has happened, as both Citadel and Trap for Cinderella are released on July 12 – and we were lucky enough to speak to Aneurin about both projects.
Barnard, who is just 26 years of age, has clearly been rather busy of late, as not only does he welcome the release of two separate productions, but he can also be seen in the BBC period drama The White Queen, while other upcoming titles such as Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes and Mariah Mundi and the Midas Box are also not far away from their theatrical release.
We discuss all of the aforementioned projects with the actor, as he talks about his enjoyment at working on a TV series, what it is about independent cinema he loves, and why, sometimes,...
