Multi-talented actor & horror queen Ayvianna Snow returns with a raft of hotly anticipated new films, including How To Kill Monsters, Punch & Wrath of Dracula.
Ayvianna stars as Velma in the award-winning How to Kill Monsters, a film described as a love letter to the 80s and 90s horror movies the Director Stewart Sparke (Book of Monsters) grew up watching. The movie delivers thrills, kills and laughs in equal measure, as the sole survivor of a blood-drenched massacre teams up with a rag-tag bunch of rookie cops and lawbreakers to defend a police station from an invasion of Lovecraftian monsters from another dimension. With a menagerie of monsters realised entirely with practical effects and buckets of fake blood and guts thrown in for good measure, it scratches the itch of horror fans craving a throwback popcorn horror movie!

Like many Filmmaker readers, I first encountered the work of Elaine McMillion Sheldon a decade ago, when the West Virginia native landed on our annual 25 New Faces of Independent Film list in 2013. She’d just completed Hollow, which began as a documentary about her home state’s struggling McDowell County, and ultimately transformed into a sprawling interactive project; and per Randy Astle’s profile, “a community portrait that includes about three hours of video — including a lot shot by members of the community — audio recordings, text, photographs and user-generated material via Instagram.” Sheldon then popped back onto my radar two […]

Metallica kicked off the North American leg of their 2023-2024 “M72 World Tour” on Friday (August 4th) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band was joined on the bill by fellow metal legends Pantera and rising rockers Mammoth Wvh (led by Wolfgang Van Halen).
The tour (get tickets here) features Metallica performing two completely unique sets (no repeat songs) over two nights in each city, with different support acts each evening. They’ll be right back at MetLife on Sunday (August 6th), with Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills opening.
The setup has the bands performing in the round, on a circular stage in the middle of the stadium, with some fans in the “Snakepit” (the center of the circle).
While there was a forecast for thunderstorms on Friday night, that never came to be, making for a comfortable summer evening in New Jersey.

The revamped Pantera embarked on the band’s first North American headlining tour in 22 years on Friday, July 28th, in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania.
Notably, the encore consisted of the Far Beyond Driven cuts “Slaughtered” and “Revolution Is My Name,” the first time either song had been played live by Pantera since 2001.
The rest of the setlist included many of the Pantera staples and album cuts the group has been playing during its previous one-off festival performances and overseas dates.
“A New Level” from Vulgar Display of Power opened the set, and from there Philip Anselmo and company played classics such as “Mouth for War,” “I’m Broken, “5 Minutes Alone,” and their cover of Black Sabbath’s “Planet Caravan,” among others. Anselmo and the audience then broke into a chorus of “Happy Birthday” for bassist Rex Brown, who turned 59 the day before.

“A Sense of Place,” a collection of six short films by young Iranian directors, had its world premiere this week at Copenhagen’s Cph:Dox. The films are inspired by Wim Wenders’ eponymous 2005 book, and the Oscar nominated director – best known for “Paris, Texas,” “Wings of Desire,” “Buena Vista Social Club” and “Pina” – served as the project’s “godfather,” he explained at the festival.
Curated by Iranian producer Afsun Moshiry in collaboration with The Wim Wenders’ Foundation, which supports young directors and innovative filmmaking, the anthology takes viewers on a journey that starts in Iran, travels to the country’s southern border, onto a plane to Germany, and ends up in France, where two of the films are shot.
The idea for the collection was born from a Wenders retrospective and masterclass Moshiry was planning in Iran in 2019, which never happened because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Instead, Wenders mentored the...

(This article contains detailed story spoilers for “Godzilla vs Kong”)
What with “Godzilla vs Kong” being the culmination of the Monsterverse franchise, you might have been surprised to learn that it’s under two hours long — a rarity in this age of lengthy megablockbusters. But there is a price to that sort of efficiency.
I’ve watched “Godzilla vs Kong” a few times now, and it’s pretty clear that we ended up with a pretty slimmed down version of this story. It’s a point made with emphasis when Lance Reddick shows up late in the film to deliver a single unimportant line before being completely forgotten. It’s tough to imagine Reddick wasn’t supposed to have a significantly larger role.
Likewise for Kyle Chandler’s character, who returns from “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” and does absolutely nothing at any point. My guess is that they only...

As someone who has been a fan of all the recent Monsterverse movies to varying degrees thus far, I can confidently say that Godzilla vs. Kong is easily the best of the bunch, as director Adam Wingard does a great job of not only celebrating both of these cinematic titans in ways that are befitting of their long-standing legacies, but also gives fans what they’re looking for out of this kind of a “versus” film: a winner. Admittedly, though, even though GvK gives us a definitive conqueror between these oversized beasts, the real winners in the end are all the monster buffs out there who have been waiting decades to see Big G take on Skull Island’s most famous resident, because it delivers in ways I was not expecting.

ABC’s Dancing With The Stars ended its 29th season Monday night delivering a 0.9 in the adults 18-49 demographic and 6.08 million viewers. Although it ticked down from the dancing competition’s Season 28 finale, it ticked up in the demo from last week to win Monday in primetime alongside The Voice and netted its largest audience in six weeks.
DWTS served as a solid lead-in for The Good Doctor, which also got a one-tenth boost from last week. While the numbers may be adjusted due to local NFL preemptions, for now the duo gave ABC the overall ratings win in early Nielsen Live+Same Day numbers.
As mentioned, NBC’s The Voice shared the top spot Monday, ticking up from its last original. Meanwhile, Weakest Link was on par with last week. NBC edged ABC for No. 1 overall in viewers.

The moment gamers have been waiting the last 12 months for has finally arrived. Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 are now in the hands – assuming you managed to get a pre-order in, of course – of those they were intended for, ushering in an all-new generation of adventures boasting unparalleled visual fidelity, performance and scope. Microsoft and Sony may be somewhat late to the party, so to speak, for those who primarily consume their games on high end PC rigs, but with the minimum bar now raised (and last-gen retired), folks from all camps can expect to see publisher and developer alike push the boundaries of what was thought possible.
Naturally, it’ll take some time for those endeavors to bear fruit and, for the moment, at least, platform holders are supplementing the general lack of next-gen exclusives with a bevy of improved and/or upgraded ports. Taking a leaf out of...

We got a chance to speak to Michele Nitri, owner and sole proprietor of Hollow Press, about the history of the publisher, future plans and (of course) underground comics.

When it premiered in 2013, Sleepy Hollow immediately became a fan favorite. Nicole Beharie is speaking out about what led to her exit from Sleepy Hollow. Back in 2016, the Fox series ended its third season by killing off the popular Abbie (Beharie), one half of its main duo. The news was met with confusion even from co-star Tom Mison, who played Ichabod Crane, who said at London McM Comic Con that he always thought of his own character as Abbie's sidekick. "Abbie is the one the audience can relate to so when you're entering this insane world of Sleepy Hollow, you go with Abbie. She's been the guide and Ichabod is this insane man in the periphery," he said. Fox called Abbie's death a "dramatic ending" and "a bold move," and later...

The truth is out, and that can only mean one thing.
Drama!
There were a lot of things happening on Legacies Season 2 Episode 6 to the point that it felt like some of the storylines were not done justice.
More happened on "That's Nothing I Had to Remember" than happened on the entire series up until this installment.
It felt very reminiscent of an episode of The Vampire Diaries at its peak, but I'm not sure that style of storytelling works for Legacies.
Josie's trip to New Orleans was frustrating. Her thirst to get rid of Hope almost put the character past the point of no return.
If you watch Legacies online, you know Josie has been flirting with darkness thanks to that pesky professor, but she genuinely considered not restoring to everyone their memories Hope.
So, tell me, how is it we've both forgot the same person?

For director Elaine McMillion Sheldon, the documentary “Heroin(e)” was personal. Her Oscar-nominated short follows three women in Huntington, West Virginia, trying to help victims of the opioid epidemic. A resident of the state, which leads the nation in drug overdose deaths, Sheldon wanted to make the film because the crisis has “impacted a lot of people I know in a very personal way.” But rather than paint a bleak portrait, Sheldon hoped to shine a light on “the people on the ground actually working towards change every day.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Sheldon above.

Stars: Emily Plumtree, Sam Stockman, Matt Stokoe, Jessica Ellerby | Written by Matthew Holt | Directed by Michael Axelgaard
Picture the scene, two couples in the countryside with a video camera, a dead relative and a cursed tree. Yes, you picked out the warning sign there, the video camera. What we have in Hollow is yet another found footage film. 2012 was quite a year for this style of film and some may have hoped that we’d have less of them but with this, V/H/S and Grave Encounters 2 being released with just a few weeks between them the trend is still continuing. Now just to see how good Hollow actually is.
The story revolves around a group of friends who have a weekend away at a village in Suffolk that have a legend surrounding an ancient tree which is said to hold an evil spirit within it’s hollowed out interior.

Zero Dark Thirty (15)
(Kathryn Bigelow, 2012, Us) Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Reda Kateb. 157 mins
The controversy over this film's use of torture is a reflection of how problematic it is to classify. Is it a historical dramatisation? A factual reconstruction? A post-Bourne spy thriller? Whatever it is, it's state of the art film-making: lean, snappy, tense, gripping and as single-minded as its heroine in the 10-year pursuit of Bin Laden. But there's still much room for complexity and ambiguity. Yes, that pursuit involves torture, but also intelligence, personal determination and, ultimately, action – all of which Bigelow is well-equipped to convey.
Lincoln (12A)
(Steven Spielberg, 2012, Us) Daniel Day-Lewis, Tommy Lee Jones. 150 mins

Though many think of the British countryside as the setting for the novels of Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters, Hammer Films in particular has made good use of the crumbling old manors and remote locations to showcase the true creepiness of the British Isles. Most recently in The Woman in Black (2012) and Wake Wood (2011) Britain was shown as a land filled with tortured ghosts that suffered from Victorian oppression and pagan mysticism. Director Michael Axlegaard takes all of these themes and shoves them into a haunted tree in the new found-footage chiller Hollow.

Editor's Note: When we think of the traditional 'British horror' film, many familiar images come to mind - fog-swept moors, sinister mansions on secluded estates, and the ravaged face of Christopher Lee, to name a few. From these memorable roots, British Horror continues to evolve, with a modern and terrifying London often replacing isolated and eerie country houses. In fact the genre, which is very much alive and well, has launched the careers of a surprising number of notable British filmmakers, including Terence Fisher, Nicolas Roeg, Edgar Wright, and Neil Marshall. Since Halloween will soon be upon us, we thought it appropriate to ask Matthew Holt, the writer/producer of Hollow, to share his recommendations for the best in British Horror. What better way to get in the spirit of this spookiest of holidays? Horror of Dracula (1958) Dir. Terence Fisher Starring Christopher Lee in the lead role, before his turns...
