- Hangtree, California --We open with a body lying in the street. It is a corrections officer named Walton who was killed right after he purchased a necklace which is still in his possession. Jane determines based on the clothes that Walton was trying to improve his station in life. Jane thinks an ex-inmate did it but the strange thing is Walton was killed with a prison shank.
Grace is handing out wedding invitations. The plan is for Lisbon and Jane to visit Walton' girlfriend, a hairdresser named Shelley. Rigsby volunteers to speak with local ex-cons who did time at Walton's prison, Carson.
Rigsby knocks on a door and is immediately called "pig" by a rough-looking older guy. Rigsby calls him "dad" and follows him inside. Rigsby's father, Steve (William Forsythe), has an alibi but says he could easy tell him who killed Walton. Steve seems to still be a criminal, selling stolen cigarettes and meth.
Shelley had only been dating Walton for a few weeks. She confirms he'd been taking night classes at a community college with the goal of being a detective. On his way out Jane asks out loudly if she's ever stolen supplies from the salon.
At the prison a corrections officer named Earl said he knew Walton had been studying criminology. Walton recently had been working with a professor on transferring an inmate to a supermax facility. Walton wouldn't tell him the name of the inmate.
Jane and Lisbon visit the community college. The professor said Walton never used real names, but Jane is able to use his mentalist tricks to determine from her and the classmates that the inmate was a white supremacist from Fontana named Marcus.
Grace tells Lisbon that the guy they want is Marcus Lansdale, who apparently runs the prison's protection operation.
Rigsby takes Lisbon aside to tell her about his father. She is well aware and advises him to bring someone else if he questions Steve again.
Jane and Lisbon question Lansdale. Lansdale says there was no chance he was changing prisons and that if wanted Walton dead he would have killed him in the prison. Jane abruptly leaves.
Cut to Jane and Lisbon bringing a picture of Lansdale to Shelley and asking her why they didn't tell them he is her brother. Jane recognized that she and her brother lie in similar ways. But Shelley also has an alibi. She says her brother had her investigate Walton in order to find weaknesses in the guard trying to move him. She fell Walton him and they began to date. A week ago she told Lansdale she would no longer spy on Walton and her brother was furious. She refuses to make a statement against her brother.
With the team at something of a dead-end Lisbon wants Rigsby to find a new angle.
Rigsby and Grace pay a visit to Steve. Steve says a former girlfriend of his named Rocket knows everything that happens in Hangtree. He agrees to take them to a "jailbird bar" where she hangs out.
Earl tells Jane and Cho that Walton trying to Lansdale shows he was naive. Lansdale was powerful and Earl likes having him there to keep the rest of the inmates in line. Jane becomes obsessed with the surveillance cameras. When Earl leaves to break up a fight Jane sits and observes. He spots what seems to be a drug transaction take place but doesn't tell Earl. Jane says he's an ex-con and asks to speak with some of the prison's trustees.
Jane asks to speak with two in particular, Jorge Valasquez and Nick Monaco, a thief. Both are short-timers.
Steve goes into the bar himself and a few seconds later there is a commotion and Rocket comes sprinting out. Grace follows her and Rigsby goes inside. He finds his dad with a knife at a man's throat while the bartender points a shotgun at them both. Eventually Steve puts down the knife.
Outside Steve convinces Rocket to tell Rigsby and Grace that the guy they are looking for is a guy named named Butch. The other night he bragged about the murder.
Jorge has a new tattoo that Jane notices. Nick refers to himself as "old school." He has them show him the laundry operation, which works for every hotel and restaurant in the city. Jane references Landsale and both inmates clam-up. Nick tells him he has no interest in being stabbed when Jane suggests he could shorten his sentence.
Rigsby and Grace arrest Butch, who is a meth cook.
Butch tells Lisbon that he knows Lansdale, but doesn't recognize a picture of Walton. He says he doesn't know anything about a murder. Jane calls and tells Lisbon she should come down to the prison. She's interested in Butch but comes to join him.
Jane follows Earl to the cafeteria and has him search the man he saw dealing heroin on the monitor. He also is able to point Earl to the stash. Lansdale notices.
In another room Jane loudly lies to Lisbon, telling her his info came from Nick, who is willing to give up Lansdale. Jorge hears this.
In the yard Jorge tells Lansdale that Nick is about to give him up. Lansdale asks Jorge to get him a shank.
When Grace tell Rigsby that Butch was busted with a bunch of hot cigarettes he perks up.
Rigsby tells Steve that he set him up, trying to get Butch arrested to eliminate his competition in the cigarettes racket. Rigsby looks like he's about to punch his father and Steve shows him he is carrying a knife. Rigsby leaves.
Lansdale grabs a shank from and strides into Nick's cell. But inside Cho and Earl are waiting. This charge will be enough to get Lansdale moved to a supermax prison. After Lansdale yells that someone will get Nick they realize Nick is nowhere to be found.
Jane, Lisbon and a several cruisers pull over the prison's laundry truck on hits way out of the facility. In the back they find Nick hiding in one of the baskets. Nick said he had to try and escape because Jane led people to believe he snitched on Lansdale. Jane says it's the only way he could get Nick to show how him he escaped when he killed Walton.
Steve finds Rigsby at his house burning his stash of stolen merchandise. When Steve wonders if this means they are even, Rigsby puts down his gun and says "no." Steve puts down his knife and the two fight, with Rigsby eventually getting the better of his father. But Rigsby doesn't finish his father off, instead helping him off the ground. Steve says "I shoulda used the knife" and leaves.
Nick admits to Jane and Lisbon that he killed Walton. He was robbing jewelry stores in order to build a nest egg for when he got out. On his second job Walton happened to spot him. Nick said he had no choice but to kill the guard. Jane realized trustee prisoners were sneaking out when he spotted the quality of Jorge's new tattoo and Nick's manicure.
Rigsby tells Grace he won't be attending her wedding. He still loves her. She's marrying a good guy and he respects that but he can't watch her marry someone else.
