ABC’s American Idol Season 22 brought Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie back as judges. However, the judging panel is about to see a significant change for the following season, as Perry announced that this season would be her last. Fans assumed that Perry would be leaving Idol permanently. But she alluded in April 2024 that fans should expect to see her return.
Katy Perry says she’s saying goodbye to ‘American Idol’ ‘for now’
Katy Perry joined American Idol in 2018 during season 16, and she complements her fellow judges, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. Through the last several seasons, Perry’s proven to be a divisive judge on the show — and she’s undoubtedly the most unpredictable. Sadly, she announced she plans to leave after season 22.
So, is her leave permanent? Perry said on Good Morning America in April 2024 that fans may see her return, as she’s only saying goodbye “for now.

In the summer of 1968, months after the releases of We’re Only in It for the Money and Lumpy Gravy and a few months ahead of the release of Cruising with Ruben & the Jets, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention found time for a five-hour concert on the Sunset Strip. A new box set, Whisky a Go Go, 1968 — due out June 21 — chronicles the unique evening, which the band recorded for release but, in Zappa’s signature fashion, divvied up for spare parts on other recordings. Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

It’s last call for a number of great movies leaving HBO and HBO Max in March. Fortunately, the month is also packed with new movies and shows, but if you were planning to revisit any of the films below, now’s your chance.
The good news is you won’t have to squeeze in any binge-watching – there are no series leaving HBO Max this month, just films. Expiring titles of note include Sam Raimi’s definitive horror films “The Evil Dead” and “Evil Dead 2,” Wes Anderson’s charming coming-of-age romance “Moonrise Kingdom,” the Charlize Theron-led dramedy “Tully,” Judd Apatow’s “The King of Staten Island” starring Pete Davidson, and the musical drama “Dreamgirls,” starring Jennifer Hudson in the role that earned her the Oscar.

The controversial and contentious experiment where Warner Bros. has debuted its 2021 slate of feature films on HBO Max will hit a crescendo in October thanks to the releases of “The Many Saints of Newark” and “Dune” on the streaming platform. Both “Many Saints” producer and co-writer David Chase and “Dune” filmmaker Denis Villeneuve have criticized the corporate decision to release films day-and-date in theaters and via HBO Max, but despite the outcry, the two highly anticipated features lead a massive lineup of acclaimed library movie titles and Emmy Award-winning original series coming to the network in October 2021. Highlights include:
“Curb Your Enthusiasm” (October): Larry David’s Emmy Award-winning series returns for its 11th season in October and will tackle the coronavirus pandemic in a way that feels organic to the show and its protagonist. “We figured out a way that we are definitely living in a reality where the pandemic has happened,...

When it comes to figuring out why spy series MacGyver is getting a TV reboot, your guess is as good as mine, but today brings some news about what it’s going to look like, in the form of two cast additions.
Addison Timlin, known best for Californication but most familiar to this writer as the love interest for Anton Yelchin in Stephen Sommers’ under-appreciated Odd Thomas, has boarded the CBS project in the lead female role. She’s playing Mickey, an app developer who’s aggressively progressive in her political views but harbors a soft spot for Lucas Till’s MacGyver. Meanwhile, Michelle Krusiec (Hawaii Five-o) will play Agent Croix, who works for the Department of Homeland Security and is sister to a character named Lincoln (George Eads).

As a horror fan, I find that movies blending humor with scares and gore always incite a bit of a cringe, but when done properly, horror comedies are a hell of a good time. There’s a reason why my favorite subgenre of horror happens to be its comedic offshoot, just like there’s a reason why Tucker And Dale Vs Evil is one of the funniest horror comedies to be released in the last few years. A sequel was immediately teased, rumors ran rampant, and I even tried to put the squeeze on Tyler Labine when I interviewed him for Best Man Down, but all was quiet surrounding our misunderstood yokels – until now.
Speaking this past week at Horrorhound in Cincinnati, Alan Tudyk and Labine finally confirmed that Tucker and Dale Vs Evil 2 has entered development. While there was skepticism over whether or not a sequel would ever come to fruition,...

At about the time that you reach the half-way point, Best Man Down starts to seem like writer/director Ted Koland's attempt to sweep some sort of Sundance bingo contest. Of the two dozen or so elements that have come to characterize mainstream independent film (troubled teenagers, acoustic guitar music, Justin Long), at least half make an appearance here. Had it been played as a parody (think Not Another Independent Film), this might have been pretty hilarious, but as straight drama, Down doesn’t hit the mark.

Captain Phillips The wave of love and appreciation for movies today is interesting. When Captain Phillips was released you would have thought Tom Hanks was the greatest living actor and now today most everyone has dialed it back to "well, it was a pretty good final 15 minutes." Perhaps maybe once people watch it again at home they'll finally come around to agreeing with me that Danielle Albert also delivers a great performance. Maybe, but I'm not holding my breath.

Dramedies are pretty commonplace this day and age. They are perhaps, the best genre to imitate real life since life is usually a crazy blend of drama and comedy. The two genres can mesh either beautifully or tragically. Best Man Down is a perfect example of this phenomenon and while it doesn’t really know whether it’s comedy or drama, that is just the point and the results are actually pretty solid.

Death be not proud nor funny nor moving nor remotely interesting in “Best Man Down,” a forgettable indie that shifts tone from comedy to drama without any feel for either. It’s a waste of a few talented actors, to say nothing of the audience’s time. At the Arizona wedding reception of Scott (Justin Long) and Kristin (Jess Weixler, “The Good Wife”), he’s worried about how much everything costs while she looks forward to lounging in Cabo with a cocktail. Scott’s best man Lumpy (Tyler Labine) quickly becomes a more pressing concern, spilling tequila on the bridal gown and generally getting.

People are often quick to judge others based on their limited views and exposure of the person’s actions and personality, before evening getting to know them. What’s even more shocking is that this biased public labeling has grown to include people’s friends and family, particularly in this modern world of social media. But even with the growing technology that’s modeled to help make communication easier, people are continuously keeping their personal lives a secret. The Man Who Wasn’t There: Koland’s Debut Lost In Its Own Drift
Poor Minnesota, it sure gets a bum rap when it comes to the movies. When its representation is not subjected to the Diablo Cody affect or used in name only (Contagion), it’s featured as the cold and isolated harbor of blandly unappealing stock types, at last as Ted Koland utilizes the state for his directorial debut, Best Man Down. A victim of title modification (originally, the film was to be known as Lumpy, which would have served it better in several ways, both good and bad), you wouldn’t be remiss in approaching the film as if it were a light, romantically tinged comedy, its new name suggesting or hinting that people like Ashley Judd should be littered throughout the cast. When we think about wedding comedies, death is rarely part of the equation – especially among younger characters. Maybe if an old-timer croaks for some insane reason, then Maybe we can find a little humor in a more timely death, but usually our wedding party is typically safe.
That’s far from the case in Ted Koland’s dramedy Best Man Down, telling the story of Scott (Justin Long) and Kristin (Jess Weixler), two newlyweds who must delay their honeymoon after Scott’s best man Lumpy (Tyler Labine) drops dead at their wedding. Trust me, it’s not as morbid as it sounds, and that’s largely due to Koland’s balance of laughs and sincerity.
I ended up liking the film quite a bit, as both Justin Long and Tyler Labine made such a sad situation very revealing and inspiring, but there were a few questions raised throughout Scott’s journey.

While Hollywood seems content to churn out an endless stream of soulless romantic comedies brimming with too many stars, a string of low-budget rom-coms have recently hit theaters boasting more heart than Hollywood could ever handle. The latest is A Case of You, a touching, timely tale of Sam, a young writer (played by Justin Long) who, to land the love of his life; a free-spirit named Birdie (played by the luminous Evan Rachel Wood), engages in some reverse Catfishing.
To turn himself into the perfect man, Sam treats Birdie's Facebook page like an online Cyrano de Bergerac; telling him what to like, what to think and what kinds of dates to take her on. It's easily one of the year's most charming films and an absolute can't miss for all rom-com fans!

The Minnesota couple's Phoenix wedding would be perfect -- all the friends and relatives gathered, a lovely hotel, a beautiful bride, love in the air.
But the best man, the aptly-named "Lumpy" (Tyler Labine), is out of control -- binge drinking, singing along with every song, a sloppy drunk in every sense.
"Why don't you call it a night?" the groom (Justin Long) begs.
"You're cuttin' off the Best Man?"
No point. Lumpy carries the party to his room, injures himself, staggers out into the desert in the middle of the night and dies.
It's "Best Man Down," but the bride, Kristin (Jess Weixler), is upset -- that her honeymoon, "under a palm tree, in a kaftan, sipping Mai Tais," is ruined. She's a self-medicating ball of stress, and Lumpy's bull-in-a-china-shop stampede through her "big night" has stripped all the sympathy from her. She is irked as all get out...

“Intolerance” would be a massive, amazing undertaking in 2013. Can you even put in perspective what it was like 100 years ago? Arguably one of the most important and influential silent films ever made, “Intolerance” runs almost three hours and covers centuries of storytelling. It’s a fascinating film both in the history of cinema and the way it addressed cultural concerns of the time. Cohen Media Group continues to expertly restore and highlight great films. They’re quickly rising the ranks of the most important Blu-ray studios working today.

Title: Best Man Down Director: Ted Koland Starring: Justin Long, Jess Weixler, Tyler Labine and Addison Timlin Society is often quick to judge and place labels on people who seem to have come by less fortunate circumstances. People are often quick to criticize the seemingly erratic behavior of those around them, without knowing all of the circumstances of their situation. That’s certainly the case in the new comedy-drama ‘Best Man Down,’ which is currently available on VOD and is set to open in select theaters on Friday. Justin Long has been a busy man lately. That should be pretty evident by the fact that he had to movies to promote when he said down with MTV News' Josh Horowitz this week.
The first, "A Case of You," a film co-written by Long and his brother Christian with Keir O'Donnell, tells the story of a man who molds himself to be the perfect match for the girl he's fallen in love with.
The other is called "Best Man Down," a movie more serious than it's friendly title would have you believe. The day after his wedding, Scott (Long) finds that his best man and best friend Lumpy has died. The film was originally coming to be named after the deceased character, but it was changed recently.

"Back To The Future" is one of pop culture's most referenced touchstones, one everyone knows and loves — and we mean everybody, including actor Justin Long.
The 1985 comedy hit stars Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly, a teen who accidentally travels back in time to 1955 in a time machine invented by a slightly mad scientist (Christopher Lloyd). During his trip back in time, Marty must make sure his teenage parents-to-be meet and fall in love, in order for him to get back to the present day and avoid erasing his own existence.
Long, whose films "A Case of You" and "Best Man Down" open this month, is a huge fan of McFly and Friends, and has the Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox impressions to prove it. When Long sat down with MTV News' Josh Horowitz for "After Hours," he not only showed off his expert impersonations, but also totally geeked out,...

When we quizzed Justin Long about rom-coms earlier this year, he passed with flying colors. Because Justin Long doesn't just star in romantic comedies, Justin Long loves romantic comedies. He even co-wrote one of his own, A Case of You, while listening to Joni Mitchell. The movie, on VOD November 6, stars Long as a struggling writer who meets a girl (Evan Rachel Wood), consults her Facebook page, then pretends to like what she likes in order to impress her. Vulture spoke to the actor, who is also promoting a new non-rom-com indie, Best Man Down, about his latest projects, drinking less with age, and masturbating to pictures of present-day Carrie Fisher. Plus: some updates on Kevin Smith's Tusk, in which Long will play a walrus, and his response to hater Jonathan Franzen.Last time we talked, I quizzed you on romantic comedies. You killed it. Oh, yeah, that was fun.

We’ve all been to a wedding where one of the guests gets a little too hammered for their own good, lighting up the dance floor with sloppy movements and encouraging dangerous amounts of shot-ripping – but what if he/she didn’t survive the night? The “Best Man” has a ton of duties in a wedding party, but staying alive typically isn’t a concern. Ted Koland’s Best Man Down introduces this nightmare scenario, tying together new beginnings and untimely ends in a way that’s both comical and emotionally revealing. There’s sometimes a difference between being someone’s “Best Man” and oldest friend, and Koland explores a friendship that is strong, but hasn’t been revisited for a brief period of time. Life can change in a heartbeat, even at the happiest of occasions.

After Will Ferrell called the actor an angry elf in the holiday comedy Elf, fan favorite "Game of Thrones" star Peter Dinklage (who gets sassy in the Best Man Down trailer) will play a different mythical man of small stature for a more mature audience. THR has word that Dinklage is currently signed on to headline a new untitled comedy for Paramount Pictures which will see the actor played a man who tells people that he is a genuine leprechaun. Described as being in the vein of Bad Santa with Billy Bob Thornton as a drunk, crass, mall-employed Santa Claus, the film is said to be an R-rated comedy but with an emotional core. That kind of film makes sense with Andrew Dodge behind the script. Though audiences might not know Dodge by name, he just scripted Bad Words, the directorial debut of Jason Bateman, which follows a bunch of...

Everyone loves a wedding, right? Love is in the air and everyone gets to have a fun time, right? In Best Man Down, Lumpy (Tyler Labine) has a bit too much fun at the wedding of his best friend Scott (Justin Long) to Kristin (Jess Weixler). So much fun it literally kills him. That may sound like a heavy premise for a comedy, but it sets up the heart of Best Man Down. Following his unexpected death, Scott and Kristin have to fly back to the Midwest to make his funeral arrangements, and that's where they make the surprise discovery that Lumpy had been keeping a lot of secrets from them. One of them was his relationship with a quirky, says-what's-on-her-mind gal named Ramsey (Addison Timlin). We've got an exclusive clip from Best Man Down, available now on iTunes and other...

When a couple gets married, they usually hop into a limo and leave for the Bahamas or some other kind of romantic spot that best celebrates their honeymoon. In Best Man Down, the couple (Justin Long and Jess Weixler) spends their honeymoon in the Midwest making funeral preparations after the wedding’s best man (Reaper‘s Tyler Labine) suddenly drops dead in the middle of the festivities.
What might have been a goofy wedding-centered comedy makes a severe turn with Labine’s on-screen death, pushing the film into (what looks like) a much darker drama with Long’s character examining his late friend’s life.
Written and directed by Ted Koland, Best Man Down opens on October 3rd.

If the world of wedding-based reality TV has taught us anything, it’s that a wedding can be ruined by a multitude of factors, from drunk relatives to the table linens not being the right shade of pink that the bride designated in her order. But I think having your best man die the night of the wedding in his hotel room really shut up even the women from Bridezilla in terms of its awfulness. The trailer for Ted Koland‘s Best Man Down wastes no time sparing you the icky details. Scott (Justin Long) and Kristin (Jess Weixler) have a beautiful wedding and are preparing to jet off to their honeymoon when they discover Scott’s best friend Lumpy (Tyler Labine) collapsed in his hotel room, dead of apparent alcohol poisoning. Instead of reveling in their marital bliss, the newlyweds have to fly home and use the money for Lumpy’s funeral, and...

For some reason, Ted Koland.s feature writing/directing debut Best Man Down flew completely under the radar through its development. The last time we heard about it, Justin Long had just joined the cast, but that was a couple of years ago back when the film was still called Lumpy. The surprise twist to the story is that Apple has released a new trailer for the film, and now I cannot wait to watch it. In the film, Long (For a Good Time, Call.) and Jess Weixler (The Good Wife) star as Scott and Kristen, a loving couple celebrating their wedding day. Unfortunately, Scott.s liquor-loving best man Lumpy (Tyler Labine) suddenly drops dead, and it really sticks a fork in everyone.s good mood. Scott decides to take the money he was going to use for and use the honeymoon and uses it to give Lumpy a proper...

If there's one genre that's benefited from the recent boom of home viewing options, it's the indie comedy. With the glut of studio comedies regularly choking the multiplexes, it's easy for the smaller comedies to get lost along the way. The breakout success of things like "Bachelorette" has shown distributors that the audience is there and, with a little prodding, they'll click, download, and whatever else happens when you download a movie at home. Two more comedies looking for that VOD gold have just released trailers: "Ass Backwards," starring June Diane Raphael, Casey Wilson and Alicia Silverstone and "Best Man Down," with Justin Long and former indie movie queen Jess Weixler, which, despite the title, is sadly not a wedding-set sequel to "White House Down." "Ass Backwards," which played at Sundance earlier this year, seems like the unholy love child of "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion,...

Lately Justin Long has been taking a variety of low key films from the underrated high school reunion indie 10 Years to Funny or Die's first feature film iSteve and last year's raunchy, but adorable, comedy For A Good Time Call... Now another smaller film features the actor in the form of Best Man Down. Long plays the groom at a wedding where his best friend (Tyler Labine) dies overnight after the reception. The honeymoon is put on hold and Long's quest to give him a proper funeral begins to raise questions about the man who was supposedly his best friend. The tone seems a bit messy, but it feels like a touching tale. Watch!
