In this frost hazard special, interlaced with flashbacks to similar experiences in previous episodes, Bear and his team simulate some of the harshest winter emergency challenges in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Often the elements are too overwhelming to fight, as with avalanche or blizzard, so one must seek shelter or build one appropriate for the circumstances. It maybe inevitable to strip down and swim in/under frozen water in Arctic temperatures, which frightens even Bear as rapidly collapsing body temperature disables once physical functioning and the pain crushes morale. Sliding down a snow slope, followed by his cameraman on a sled, seemed best under control, but while the first time 'bare back' went well, the second attempt, with ice ax, left both badly injured, in need of medical evacuation despite the best preparation a seasoned team of crack experts can provide.
