Ryan reminds us this is the youngest finale match-up ever. Ryan talks to the show doctor about how Lauren blew out one of her vocal cords but she's going to do great.
Theme: Three songs: contestants favorite song from the season, songs chosen by the contestants idols-- Carrie Underwood in Lauren's case, George Strait in Scotty's-- and their potential singles should they win.
In the audience: The season 10 contestants; David Archuleta; Camryn Manheim;
Contestant: Scotty McCreery
Song: "Gone," Montgomery Gentry
Performance: Although the walking around in the routine has him a bit breathless in places, it's a great, natural, fun, performance that the crowd seems into.
Contestant: Lauren Alaina
Song: "Flat on the Floor," Carrie Underwood
Performance: She's a little raspier than usual and all her power isn't there, hence the disclaimer at the top of the show and she seems nervous about the blocking. It was fun but felt a little cautious.
Contestant: Scotty
Song: George Strait picked his own song "Check Yes or No"
Performance: The song is a cutesy schoolyard crush number, midtempo, that isn't particularly exciting. Scotty does what he can with it.
Contestant: Lauren
Song: Carrie Underwood picked "Maybe It Was Memphis" by Pam Tillis
Performance: Another sort of midtempo, vanilla pop country number. Aside from a few breath issues, she sings it fine. There are some high notes that she goes breathy on the end but hits the last note hard and strong.
Ryan goes to the judges.
Randy:Says America is going to have a tough decision and that it's very even. He loved both of their performances but gives slight edge to Scotty in round one and to Lauren in round two.
JLo: Agrees with Randy's assessment of the rounds and thought it was an explosive start.
Steven: First and second rounds to Lauren only because she's prettier than Scotty.
Performance: Taio Cruz performs the perfectly average song -- "Positive"-- that was written as part of this year's songwriting challenge. Halfway through his microphone goes out. It comes back. The song is fine and he performs it in green fog surrounded by faux marching band dancers miming banging drums.
Contestant:Scotty
Song:"I Love You This Big," Jimmy tells him to make it big, that this song plays both to his emotional qualities and his vocal gifts.
Performance: As video of his "Idol journey" plays behind him he sings a boilerplate country ballad about being young and in love. He sings it well enough and the audience sways along with him.
Randy: Is marveling in the two youngest finalists and although he didn't love the song he thought it showed off his range and he's, um, yeah in it to win it.
JLo: Says he's the show's great storyteller and thinks he did an amazing job with the song.
Steven: Says he's come a long way and repeats the thing about not being able to take a three point shot from under the net.
Scotty says he's enjoying himself and can't believe he's there, but he says it very calmly.
Contestant: Lauren
Song: "Like My Mother Does" Jimmy thinks this captures Lauren's journey and it will showcase her in her best light and that mom's will be moved.
Performance: As her journey plays on the video screen, Lauren sings about how awesome her mom is while she wears a white gown and her mom sings along for the audience. She's doing fine, she stumbles a bit on going for one big note, but it's more raspinesss than a clunker. She goes and hugs her mom in the audience.
Randy: Loves it, loves it, loves it and gives her a standing ovation and says she's arrived.
JLo: Says it's a tight race but Lauren may have just won.
Steven: Predicts she's going to win and is the winner in his eyes.
Randy and Steven say Lauren took round three and JLo says it's too close to call.
Performance: David Cook sings this season's sing-out song, his version of Simple Minds "Don't You (Forget About Me)"
