Harlem Revue is a fascinating short of certain black performers' only appearance on film
I finally watched this short on YouTube. The first scene is of a couple of African-American performers on some ship. Their faces seemed to be darkened with white lips which seems to make this a minstrelsy show. Maybe they're the same people in the next scene dressed in Navy captains uniform in front of a ship board decorated with the stereotyped images of the black caricatures on the walls. All I'll say about those sequences is I'm glad they ended soon! Next, is singer Bill Powers. He's pretty entertaining as is the final act, The Brown Sisters, a trio who sing about their race doing the "Hi-De-Ho" of which that particular phrase is best known as Cab Calloway's shtick. In summary, Harlem Revue is a fascinating short of some performers' only appearance on film.
