Sailor Gutzler captured the attention of the world last Friday when she did the unthinkable. The 7-year-old walked away alone from the wreckage of a plane crash that killed her entire family, making her way through the cold and dark Kentucky woods to get help. But she's not the first sole survivor of a plane crash. Sailor joins a very small group of lucky souls who made it out alive - and alone. Among them is Cecelia Crocker (born Cecelia Cichan), who was just 4 years old when Northwest Airlines flight 255 crashed outside Detroit Metro Airport minutes after taking off. Now...

CNN Films top brass made the announcement on Friday [26] ahead of the documentary’s world premiere at the Traverse City Film Festival in Michigan on Saturday.
Ky Dickens directed the account of a sole plan crash survivor who sets out to meet others – there have only been 14 sole survivors of major crashes in commercial aviation history.
“Survivors are often considered lucky and the rescue is often considered the end to their story,” said Dickens, herself a survivor of a deadly car crash. “But the complexity of true survival is where our film – and the questions that it poses – begins.”
“We are delighted about Sole Survivor as our latest CNN Films acquisition,” said Amy Entelis, svp for talent and content development at CNN Worldwide. “We think the universal life questions explored in this film will resonate with our viewers – who will learn that there was so much more to these stories.”...

Detroit — Cecelia Crocker's body provides her with a constant reminder of the most traumatic event of her life – one that she doesn't otherwise remember.
At only 4 years old, Crocker was the lone survivor of a 1987 plane crash that killed 154 people aboard and two on the ground near Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
In the new documentary, "Sole Survivor," Crocker breaks her silence, discussing how the crash of the Phoenix-bound jetliner has affected her.
"I think about the accident every day. It's kind of hard not to think about it when I look in the mirror," she said. "I have visual scars. My arms and my legs. And I have a scar on my forehead."
Crocker, 30, also sports an airplane tattoo on her left wrist.
"I got this tattoo as a reminder of where I've come from. I see it as – so many scars were put on my body against my will – and...

If you’re a filmmaker (or know one) and you want us to consider an in-production film for our Project of the Day column, fill out the form here. In the history of aviation, there have been 14 large commercial plane crashes with one lone survivor. Sole Survivor offers the first glimpse into the lives of four of these sole survivors. There's a misconception that if somebody survives a tragedy, they should feel lucky. Pressure is placed on survivors to move on, to feel grateful for being spared a dire fate without acknowledging the psychological, social, emotional, spiritual and physical ramifications of survival. Through their varying experiences yet similar reflections, Sole Survivor puts a face on survivorship, underscoring the fact that.
