The effect of The Simpsons on pop culture can’t be overstated. In the early nineties, the show tapped into the cultural zeitgeist in a way few others had before. Indeed, no other cartoon show could reasonably emulate it- but Hollywood couldn’t help but try. Capitol Critters, Family Dog, and Fish Police were just a few of the shows that tried to be “the new Simpsons.” Still, the only one that really came close was ABC’s The Critic, starring the voice of Jon Lovitz as Jay Sherman, perhaps the world’s least-loved film critic and the subject of this Gone But Not Forgotten episode.
Unlike other wannabe animated hits, The Critic could boast a legit connection to The Simpsons, with it also being a production of James L. Brooks’ Gracie Films. At the same time, creators Al Jean and Mike Reiss had been showrunners on The Simpsons during...

Daft Punk have unveiled the 10th anniversary reissue of their final album, Random Access Memories. Featuring nine previously-unreleased tracks — totaling 35 minutes of new music — the release offers a unique glimpse into the French duo’s creative process, and pays homage to the celebrated, 2x album that marked the end of their run.
The duo also unveiled a video for the new track “Infinity Repeating (2013 Demo),” featuring Julian Casablancas + The Voidz, which they note will be their final music video. Watch it below.
“Infinity Repeating (2013 Demo)” was recorded during the initial sessions for Random Access Memories at Conway Recording Studios in Los Angeles and Electric Lady Studios in New York. Built around a literal loop, the song (and its animated video) allude to the confluence of humanity and technology, a theme present throughout the album. “It’s lovely and bizarre, like a human,” Casablancas said in a statement. “And, like a human,...

For the last two decades, Cinco Paul (along with writing partner Ken Daurio) was best known for writing big-deal family movies your kids were begging you to take them to. But all the while he had a musical percolating in his head, partially based upon a what-if set-up involving the backpackers of “An American Werewolf in London” entering a musical-scape instead of a horror-scape. And thus, 2021’s hit AppleTV+ series “Schmigadoon!” — starring Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key in a far less furry, significantly more comic version of the “London” scenario — was born.
Also starring a veritable who’s who of Broadway talent and borrowing liberally from the Great American Musical heyday of shows like “The Music Man,” “Carousel” and “The Sound of Music” among a great many others, “Schmigadoon!” proved popular enough for fans to demand a second season, which just wrapped and will be entitled “Schmicago!” Showrunner Cinco Paul...

Those keenly awaiting "Shame" and "12 Years a Slave" director Steve McQueen's next film are going to have to wait a while longer it seems.
On top of the already ordered six-part series "Codes of Conduct" he's developing and directing for HBO, the filmmaker is set to do another six-part series, this one a period drama commissioned by The BBC.
Rainmark Films is set to produce the show which deals with the experiences of a black community in west London in a period covering between the 1960s and the present day.
McQueen will direct and co-write the show alongside several other writers including Debbie Tucker Green ("Random"). BBC drama controller Ben Stephenson took the unusual step of commissioning the series before reading a script in order to secure McQueen.
The show is currently untitled and will begin shooting Spring next year.

Known for exploring psychological terrain with a tactful and poetic profundity, she broke out on filmic terms with the ’09 short Heat, British Academy Television Award for Best Single Drama winner Random (2011) for which she employed the services of thesp/muse Nadine Marshall. Part of the 2012 edition of Sundance’s June Screenwriters Lab, Brit playwright (prolific pace) and filmmaker Debbie Tucker Green (who also goes by the lower-cased debbie tucker green) commenced shooting on the BFI-funded contempo drama in April of this year. Marshall who got a nom for Random, and mostly recently was cast in Green’s play, would join the feature alongside some mega wattage in Idris Elba. With no Andrea Arnold film in sight for ’14, we look forward to for Green’s feature debut contribution, which includes the work of Lilting cinematographer Urszula Pontikos.

As the countdown to next week's British Academy Television Awards begins, Abi Morgan, screenwriter of The Hour, Shame and The Iron Lady, reveals why it's been a golden year for television
Mabel is unimpressed. "What are you doing?" "Writing a piece about television." "Hm." She considers me with the bored disdain that only an eight-year-old can deliver, when they're tired and hungry and just home from school. "Television. It rots the senses in the head. It kills imagination dead." I stare blankly, my fingers hovering over my laptop keys. "'Who told you that?" "Everyone knows that, Mum." She sighs, already halfway out of my office.
Roald Dahl's got a lot to answer for. It's not that I am advocating the ditching of the classics. I have oompa loompa-ed my kids with the best of them, sending my son Jesse off to school with his face orange and his hair green for National Book Day.

I’m not sure there’s a way to discuss Random, an adaptation of a one-women show, without discussing the random event at the core of the film. A film like this doesn’t require “shock,” so much as the value of the film is in its construction. It’s an effecting emotional journey and if you wish to see it cold (as I you should see anything), than you should know I recommend and avoid this rest of this write-up.
Random is a poetic symphony of images, language and identity. Director Debbie Tucker Green is an English playwright and the winner of 2004 Lawrence Oliver award for most promising in that category. She has delivered on this promise. Random is a short feature film adaptation of a previous work, and it keeps theatrical conventions: it is narrated and performed bravely by Nadine Marshall. The incident at the core of the...
