"Luna from the Moon's shore."

Aware of Yoshihiko Matsui's work for some time, I was intrigued to discover that Matsui's first movie has recently gotten English subtitles, leading to me cracking open an empty rusty can.

Note:Review contains some plot details.

View on the film:

Made from what appears to be left over reels of film, writer/directing auteur Yoshihiko Matsui opens the rusty cans to a No Wave-inspired atmosphere of stripped-down lighting, rough & ready hand-held camera moves and the impression of capturing unguarded moments, via pinning the camera to look through door hinges, taking an isolationist approach to the sex scenes.

Playing the transgression notes of the No Wave movement, Matsui negotiates through the Japanese censor limits on sex scenes with scenes of masturbation staged in front of objects (whilst making pretty clear what's happening) and this lonely young Gay man kissing the poster of his heart-throb, while listening to the terrific droning No Wave score, through rusty empty cans.
