funny as heck
Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen play two Platonic besties, reunited after a long break, with comedic gems throughout their resumes. Platonic is a dated premise built on old Hollywood cliches. Seth Rogen plays Will, a goofy character with a goofy charm. Rose Byrne and Rogen share decent chemistry and try to elevate the derivative writing. The premise is built on old Hollywood cliches that are unsalvageable even when served in a new bottle. Platonic has a lot of time to make something of itself, as creators are often sceptical with pilots when waiting to get their shows approved. This may have contributed to the tackiness of the episode, but the creative personnel have a pedigree. Let's give it more time because the creative personnel have pedigree. Sylvia and Will were former best friends who kept their friendship platonic for years. When Sylvia tried to warn Will about Audrey, they didn't speak for five years. In the present day, Audrey and Will have separated and Sylvia calls Will for coffee, but she doesn't reveal the reason. The meeting between Will and Sylvia is awkward as Will does not want to be there. When Will asks about Sylvia's work, she shows a picture of her family and then apologizes by saying she is unemployed. Will bookends the meeting by inviting Sylvia to a party he is having at his bar. His friends believe her sudden reappearance in his life raises questions, but Will classifies it as her attempt to rekindle their friendship. She narrates the tale to her mom-friend Katie the next day when she goes to drop her kids. She encourages her to go to the party together, but before they can leave, Will spots Sylvia and comes over. Andy is rude to Sylvia for some reason, but it turns out that he is being defensive because he thinks Sylvia wants to get with Will. The women leave and lament the lack of male friends in their lives. They spot Will arguing with Audrey outside a bar, and Sylvia decides to stay and console her friend. Will tells Sylvia that Audrey lost interest in him as she moved up the social ladder and he cheated on her with a random person. Sylvia decides to renew their old days and becomes his "wing-lass" to land Will a woman, but it does not go well. Will spots a "W" necklace on a Doberman in the shop and they take it off the dog. They have weed gummies and dinner, and then roam around the city renewing their friendship. The night almost ends well for Sylvia, but she misspeaks about her knowledge of Will's divorce before calling him. Will and Sylvia start bickering, which turns into a fight. Will's double standard of not breaking up his friendship with Andy for hating Audrey is revealed. Sylvia tries Will's trick when in bed with Charlie, her husband, and texts Will when it doesn't work. They chat ominously as something prepares to "give way".
