Refreshing, engaging, fantastic acting and cast. . .Would be given a 9 if English subtitles were easier to read
jonathancley16 January 2023
I read Cixin Liu's series a couple of times in 2019 and 2020 and was blown away. . .so excited this show finally came out after the release date kept on getting delayed.

It's good that this show came out of a Chinese production company and captures the "feel" of the Cixin Liu's books very well so far. . .binge worthy watching all the episodes on WeTV.

The cast, acting and character development have been superb so far and the story has not been "watered down", "messed with" or "dumbed down" for the average viewer who hasn't read Cixin Liu's books. I would hate to see Netflix dissecting the story to dumb it down for the lowest common denominator (who have a hard time perhaps understanding the concepts in the stories) . . .and it will be interesting nonetheless with more of the characters not being Chinese in the Netflix version (to see if they can keep the "feel" of the story being told from a Chinese protagonist point of view . . . Time will tell.

The only problem I have with it is that the English subtitles flash by too quickly which some viewers will find off-putting and hard to catch. . .If they could hold the English subtitles on the screen longer, I would have given this a solid 9 for rating.

Groundbreaking SciFi. Held back by poor pacing.
filipehattori19 January 2023
Based on the first 8 episodes, this is a non-spoiler short review.

First off, I would recommend this to anyone interested in engaging sci fi.

Watching this show gave me the same feeling as watching the Game of Thrones premiere back in the day after having read the books. The feeling that there is nothing quite like this on TV elsewhere.

Unlike the gritty fantasy land of Westeros however, you are thrown into contemporary China, where a series of mysterious events is tearing apart the scientific community. As the mystery slowly unfolds (and I do mean slowly), your mind is put at work by a plethora of speculative science fiction concepts. It is an absolute treat.

Not only is Three Body a remarkable 1 for 1 adaptation, but stretches out and develops certain elements even further than the book. Sometimes to great effect when it comes to character development. Liu Cixin's books are often criticized for their wooden characters and this show adds a much needed dash of color to the cast. However, this also leads to it dragging on unnecessarily on certain plot threads, creating serious pacing issues in a few episodes.

I'm not very familiar with Chinese dramas and I understand there is ad money to be concerned about, but you know you have a problem when even the audiobook moves the story along at a faster pace than this show. Sequences that could be handled in 30 seconds take up to 5 minutes or more.

Sometimes not every single thing needs to be said out loud and I really wish all the fat could have been left in the editing room. I've heard this was originally planned as a 24, instead of 30 episode series and I feel even that would be stretching it.

Other jarring issues include awkward English speaking sections, as well as the omittance of names of other countries (instead of "America" or "Britain", we are bizarrely treated to "Country T" and "Country M"), I assume this has to do with censorship around contemporary politics.

The show can also suffer from the quirks of Asian drama such as poor editing and while it never falls on soap opera territory, it will sometimes come dangerously close to that line.

At 8 to 10 episodes, I'm sure the Netflix version will have a much tighter pace, though it will certainly not cover the book in the same detail. I believe making this a 20 or 15 episode series would have been the optimal choice for any version.

something special
dmoreyn20 January 2023
This is a pretty intellectual series. I'm no genius, but I kept up with the dialogue and learned some very intriguing alternate concepts about our reality. It's target audience, I think, is the thinking man, and it is a beautifully done show. Can't ever really recall seeing something quite like it. You should watch it if you want something that challenges your mind, and simply relaxing and watching tv isn't your primary goal today. In addition, it feels like an easy watch, without any tedium to make you wish you could fast forward through parts of it. Definitely worth a viewing if only for the novelty of the story and how it encourages you to expand your mental horizons.

Be faithful to the original
qugaoming2 February 2023
Loyal to the original work, restored most of the content, and made a small part of changes aimed at film and television. Except for the segment of the unscrupulous reporter, which is disappointing, other segments are very pleasant. In particular, the part about Hong'an Base starts from the original work and is higher than the original work. Even those who have not read the book "Three Bodies" can easily understand the plot with a little scientific literacy and curiosity. This film and television work may be an opportunity for you to understand "Three Bodies", Liu Cixin and science fiction works. It is very good to compare the animation of the Bili Bili version.

Authentic to the original novel, and nice casting
qwcfsqyj22 January 2023
The casting is great and really fits my imagination when I read the novel (except that Shi Qiang needs to be a little more muscular). The story was beyond imagination, really epic, and it's not about one single country or one single culture, you can see every nation, every race united together when facing danger. The TV series tried to make everything the same as the book. One star was deducted because the pacing of story telling, all the flashbacks and neon lights scenes are a bit annoying and confusing, when not everyone knows the background of the story. Although the novel itself was arranged in this way, I think there should be some adaptations when you making it a TV series.

This is the three body I want! excited
p-4667021 January 2023
Not only did I shoot the three body in my imagination, but also the original plot was very moving, such as the fifth episode. In addition, the original plot is obviously to attract the interest of people who have not read the original.

We know that the first part of the original book is very dissuasive to many people. When I first read this novel, I felt it. I might not have read it without the strong recommendation of my friend. However, after you read it, you will find that this is the charm of this novel. Therefore, it is very difficult to film and television the first film. But this TV series has obviously done it. At least it is very successful from the previous seven episodes.

In short, I am very satisfied.

Surprisingly faithful adaption to already classic sci-fi book with questionable narrative choisces.
notany31 January 2023
The three-Body book series is high-concept sci-fi and already a classic. It's hard sci-fi with little speculative physics added.

POSITIVES

A typical way to adapt popular sci-fi books into TV or movies is to throw out the concepts, take some characters and broad storylines and make it a conventional mix of adventure, action, and drama.

Not this time. The Three Body TV-series takes the concepts seriously and takes time to walk the audience through details step by step. Even an attempt is worth one star. Unlike typical TV-series where the sense of mystery is made up just to keep people tuned in, there is really clever plot and concepts behind all this.

NEGATIVES

Some characters are added or removed, different storylines are out of sequence. That's understandable if they are well justified and improve the adoption.

Unfortunately, the writers made some bad choices that slows down the narrative without any good reason. They opted to keep explaining some nerdy details for over 20 minutes that don't contribute to the whole story and are not the main ideas. There are already so many concepts that absolutely have to be explored that keeping smaller ones seems like bad decision.

CONCLUSION

For someone who has read the books, this is walking through the memory line, slowly. I fear that for people who did not read the books, the narrative may be confusing. Some visual hints about what is going on are potentially misleading (as can be seen in other reviews.)

If you don't already know the story, it must be approached as a scientific whodunnit. The progresses is slow like in a detective story where nobody knows what is going on. You understand to the scientific explanations to make sense of it. Protagonists and antagonists are both grasping for the whole picture.

Netflix is doing another adaption. I don't think they do as good job as this series with all it's faults.

Profoundly high quality adaptation of the book
gregmalone16 July 2023
I just finished watching the 30 episodes of Three Body by Tencent. Loved it immensely. The main actors are fabulous. The production values are excellent. And, the story hews to the book very well.

Many will observe that the pace of the story seems slow at times, though I found it to be more of a zen experience in those episodes. In the end the series delivers the goods.

There are some a few odd quirks in the version released for English subtitle readers. The most odd is the occasional sudden insertion of completely out-of-context music, overwriting dialog and all other story sound. I've read that some copyright issues were being covered up, but boy did they do a sloppy job. A shame given how much work went into the production.

I particularly gained insight into the people of modern day China. It was revelatory to see how similar their daily lives are like mine/ours in the West. Even their views on politics and life were quite liberal and enlightened.

Highly recommend!

Really good. Not quite great
srdikano4 February 2024
Let me start by acknowledging my own biases here: The Three-Body Problem is my favorite sci-fi book (and trilogy) of all time, so I wanted badly for this TV show to be good.

And let me throw in a caveat too: Three-Body is based on a Chinese book, shot by a Chinese production company and acted by Chinese people, so inevitably there are stylistic differences that are going to make this show "feel wrong" for many of us westerners. My love for the book helps me see past that, but I acknowledge that this may not sit entirely right with a number of people outside of Asia.

The Good.

What Three-Body does best is sticking fairly closely to the book. It's a rendition that's pretty true to the source material and that's great, because the book is second to none in the hard sci-fi space. As such, the story is indeed phenomenal and the pacing is also honest to the book.

The mixed bag.

Some actors deliver strong performances (Wang Miao, Shi Quiang, Old Ye Wenjie), while some others are truly below par (Mike Evans and Pan Han are positively woeful). Some of the CGI is really good, and some of it looks pretty darn old. A little heavy on exposition at times. The screenplay felt a little hit-and-miss. And I also feel like while sticking to the source material is good, more of a proper adaptation for screen would have benefited the show.

The bad.

Production values are fairly low on multiple areas, and it really shows. I'm talking about out-of-sync dubbing (from Chinese to Chinese), non-native English speakers in English-speaking roles, some pretty mediocre cinematography at times, poor editing, continuity faux-pas, stuff like that. Of especial note is the cringe-inducing English screenplay, which was clearly written by someone with marginal understanding of the language, and which in turn gives all the international moments a distinct B-movie flavor.

All in all, I think Three-Body does a very competent job at telling an exceptionally exciting story, with an admittedly slow pace that isn't quite for everyone. My hope for the next two seasons is that they invest a little more money and massage the script a little more, get better directors and cinematographers, better audio and better actors for upcoming key roles in the saga.

A sci-fi suspense drama that stays true to the original, stays stylized, and far exceeds expectations
Kleineyie6 February 2023
I am a fan of the original. Frankly, I had no expectations for this drama at the beginning, but I was pleasantly surprised and moved by it! I should warn that I praise it for being "faithful to the original", which means that its lengthy buildup will make it difficult for new viewers to get into the swing of things, and I recommend defining it as a suspense drama, which will save a lot of meaningless expectations like "quickly confronting the aliens" and instead This will save a lot of meaningless expectations of "quickly confronting the aliens", and instead immerse yourself in the shock of the plot deduction.

I highly recommend everyone who is bored to stick around until Episode 22+, because the next layer is the blossoming of the layers of padding - BOOOOM!

I think it's very important to respect the original character background setting, because only the story that unfolds in a reasonable context is make sense - that's why I don't see the Netflix version and the Tencent version moving in the end.

It respects the historical backstory and provides an honest restoration of the details of the crazy era - although we never see the parts that were cut for some political clearance reasons, which leads to non-original readers who may not understand certain character attitude shifts as well as they could. (-0.5) It optimizes the narrative pacing of the original by making some of the characters more three-dimensional and by adding some original characters to guide the viewer through the details of the different groups (such as the internal conflicts of the ETO and the death of Yang Dong). However, in order to expand the story to 30 episodes, individual places in the early stages seem slightly long-winded. (-0.25) Its music is impressive, with several original tracks that fit the atmosphere of the original book very well. What doesn't match the music is the sound design, which I think is quite a bit out of date or not at the right volume. (-0.25) The gameplay portion of the game unfolds amazingly, with the kind of unnatural NPC dialogue and activity that fits the original setting very well, and the technical equipment and overall visuals make perfect sense for the setting era (2007), and the combination with traditional Chinese culture is extremely impressive.

All the minor flaws disappeared after I watched the last 8 episodes, and I could only exclaim that it was destined to be a landmark work of science fiction! Finally we see something that is not an individualistic narrative in a huge context, but a community of destiny.

It is also a rich reflection on human nature. Calamities befall because of humanity, but the world is also unique because of humanity. It invokes and parodies a great number of facts and phenomena, prompting us to think more dialectically about the real world.

Detailed, obsessively. dedicated to the book.
oscosc-7858613 January 2024
If you haven't read the book (and I had not) then this series will need a second watch before it starts to make sense.

There is such a lot to take in, and it's told in a flashbacks jumping across time.

When I watched it the first time I missed so much detail - and still enjoyed most of it. Watching it again after a few months and so much slots into place this time.

It's well-acted (except for the western parts) and well-written... but it really does show that adapting a book for the screen does involve making changes. The written word allows you to go into more detail, slowly. The screen batters you with information at the same pace for all.

So either, read the books first or be prepared to watch the series again to get the full enjoyment of it.

As for its faults - it does feel like the timing is off. The series is very slow-paced until the 20+ episode and then seems to race for the finished.

Nevertheless it is worth the effort. They truly made the effort to pack everything in from the book (30 episodes of it).

TEDIOUS! Ep.21: Protagonist FINALLY clues in!
dave-214-4369131 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This whole story is about aliens, but you have to trog through 21 episodes until the main character even learns about them! It's ridiculous. Most of the backstories are not useful at all, I mean 3 episodes dedicated to a mathematician who was neither interesting nor pertinent to the plotline... and half of the episodes are like that. They could have easily cut down the lead up to episode 20 into 10 episodes, and still keep all the good stuff that's interesting or pertinent . It's like the director is getting paid by the episode, not by the audience engagement.

And since it's made in China that's probably exactly what happened.

Look, if you've not watched it yet, first look at the individual episode ratings here on IMDB, then don't watch the episodes with lower ratings (only watch about 10 of the first 20), until you get to episode 20. Thankfully, you will not miss anything important, and if you think you did... don't worry...there's so much repetition that it's like beating a horse to death. You'll catch up. Plus you'll save yourself of about 7 hours of really tedious backstory that's neither interesting nor pertinent in the log run.

The rest of it is awesome.

Keep an open mind
seanyliu16 January 2023
One difficulty of book adaptations is it will never play out perfectly as it would in each reader's mind. Of course the show won't live up to the masterpiece that is Three Body Problem. That kind of scifi epic only happens ever so often; one's that can be adapted to a show even rarer. However, the show stays true to "show, don't tell", and despite some negligible flawed, eager ensemble acting, as well as a few examples of over-exaggerated editing here and there, it incorporates much of the content from the books while adding much non-cgi visually impressive elements to enrich the shows format as a visual medium. One aspect I especially enjoyed was the main cast. The casting for major characters also reflects the books surprisingly well, and the acting of major characters deserve to be applauded.

Overall, watch this show. It's engaging, aesthetically pleasing, and retains most of Liu Cixin's psychological mind-bending science fiction masterpiece.

A good match to the original story
sijieyangyang16 January 2023
My verdict is that this drama follows the original very closely and is basically the original words from it, so it's great to watch. The visual presentation is excellent throughout and is a work that is very respectful of the original.

I am sceptical about the Netflix version because I can't imagine an Chinese novel starring white people, which doesn't follow the principles of a good film. I think Netflix's version is likely to be a commercial film that extracts the essence but misleads people's perceptions of the original. This is not because of my narrow view of film adaptations, but there is so much of the original work that is written with a Chinese mindset that I would very much not like to see Netflix make a Hollywood-style Three Bodies.

Mind-Blowing !!!
allridesharing13 April 2024
In the realm of television, it's not often that a series comes along that captivates the audience to such an extent that it becomes a cultural phenomenon. The series in question has managed to do just that, transcending the boundaries of typical storytelling and delivering a narrative so compelling that it leaves viewers in awe.

From the very first episode, the series sets a high bar with its exceptional cast. Each actor embodies their character with such conviction that it's impossible not to be fully invested in their journeys. The performances are so nuanced and powerful that they elevate the material, making every scene a masterclass in acting. The chemistry between the cast members is palpable, creating a dynamic that's both believable and enthralling.

The story itself is a tapestry woven with threads of intrigue, emotion, and intellect. It's a rare gem that manages to be both intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant. The plot twists are not just for shock value; they serve a greater purpose in the narrative, challenging the viewer's perceptions and preconceived notions. Each episode builds upon the last, creating a layered and complex world that's as unpredictable as it is fascinating.

What sets this series apart is its ability to engage the viewer on multiple levels. It's not content with just entertaining; it seeks to provoke thought and discussion. The series doesn't shy away from exploring different perspectives, often presenting situations that force the audience to reconsider their stance on various issues. It's this quality that keeps the series fresh and prevents it from stagnating.

Even in moments where the pacing seems to slow, the series is meticulously laying the groundwork for future revelations. These quieter episodes are often the most revealing, offering a deeper insight into the characters and the world they inhabit. They're a testament to the show's commitment to character development and narrative depth.

The series' visual and auditory elements are also noteworthy. The cinematography is stunning, with each shot carefully composed to enhance the storytelling. The score is equally impressive, with a soundtrack that perfectly captures the mood of the series. It's clear that every aspect of the production has been crafted with the utmost care and attention to detail.

The comparison to the subsequent series released on net_flix is inevitable, but it's clear that the original stands in a league of its own. The follow-up feels lackluster in comparison, lacking the depth and complexity that made the 2023 series so remarkable. It's a reminder that not all content is created equal, and that true quality is hard to replicate.

The hope is that the second season will retain the elements that made the first so exceptional. The desire for the same cast to return is strong, as they've become synonymous with their characters. The expectation is for the series to continue pushing boundaries and delivering a story that's both thought-provoking and emotionally charged.

In conclusion, the series is a triumph of television, setting a new standard for what the medium can achieve. It's a show that doesn't just entertain, but also enriches the viewer's experience. With a perfect blend of stellar acting, a captivating story, and impeccable production values, it's no wonder that the series has earned a resounding 10/10. As the wait for season 2 continues, one thing is certain: the series has left an indelible mark on the landscape of television, and its impact will be felt for years to come.

Compared to the Netflix version, this is the best
ioniacob2 April 2024
The details with which the story is presented, even without reading the books and after watching the Netflix series, have impressed me in this Asian version. The sensitivity of the actors and the details of the cameras and effects, including the music, far exceed the result of the recording series recently on Netflix.

He concludes that the current laws that Netflix must respect to be able to reproduce an Asian film have caused it to lose too many details, adding many others of American and European interest.

I liked this version created by the writer's own country of origin, how it respects women, and how it criticizes outside influence and the aggressiveness with which decisions are made.

I think there are many underlying themes that make you reflect, to actually be a better person and provide solutions to the world instead of being scared and falling into alcohol and drugs, or being a criminal.

I think the world could stop being a Nano :)

Faithful to the book but overlong
paullewisborman16 February 2023
The remarkable thing about movies is that they manage to condense an entire book into around two hours of screen time in a cohesive and entertaining fashion, or at least the good ones do.

This is why my teenage son, whenever he gets an English literature assignment, immediately goes looking for the movie. It saves time. It's the original "blinkist". Why spend 10 hours reading a book when you can watch the movie in two? Well lots of reasons, but I get the appeal.

This series is the opposite. Thirty 35 minute episodes (if you adjust for intro and credits) so well over 16 hour of story telling. I've read the book too and trust me it's a lot quicker. Him there are of course three books and this is only the first adaptation in the trilogy and all three books need to be read to get the full experience of this dramatic space opera, so it's a shame there's not more pace to this first outing.

At the heart of this series is a faithful retelling of the book, in fact remarkably so and serves very well as a second reading, albeit a much longer one as already mentioned. For me this was ok as it is a drawn out plot with a lot of characters and it was nice to revisit it for greater understanding, but it could easily have been done in half the time.

My girlfriend is Chinese and so we watch a lot of Chinese series and this one is very "western" in its style and, I think, well acted by the Chinese cast. The only thing that lets it down are the non Chinese characters - Americans and other "westerners" who are portrayed in an almost comically stereotypical way and badly acted.

The concept behind the story is a great one and worthy of a 7/10 in itself. I won't offer any spoilers here, except to say if you can't be bothered to watch the series then you should definitely read the books. Non fact you could likely read all three books in the time it takes to watch this single series.

A fine adaptation of the book
hiraishinnojutsu16 February 2023
Give it to the Chinese themselves to adapt the work of their most beloved sci fi author to the silver screen almost word for word that they need 30 frickin' episodes to tell the whole story. I myself appreciate greatly the effort they pulled that you can see the love the directors and writers put in this project, contrasted to what their western counterparts do when it comes to adaptation these days. Need to work a little bit on the cgi parts tho, hope this show kills it at least in China so they may get the movie budget if the studio greenlits the adaption of the next two books, which I really hope they do. This is quiet frankly a fine alternative to the self-insert, politically driven hollywood projects, and yes, I have no intention at all to follow the netflix version of the adaptation no matter how much they put their budget into it (well, maybe just the trailer).

The Read-the-Book Problem
labamboos8 February 2023
I was so excited to see this, and having read the book I thought they did a halfway decent job on adapting some elements (even if timing is all over the place). There were several places where I was pointing at the "thing" on the screen like Leo.

That said, even as a book reader I was underwhelmed by the filmmakers. I will need to take a look at their other work.

My take was that someone got the funding and wanted to get this out there before it was fully vetted and ready. Either that, or I don't have the right appreciation for this sort of storytelling on screen.

I do appreciate the effort though. It's not totally terrible if you know what is going to happen, if you don't, I doubt it will be a good watch (grinding at best).

Wonderful
duanxiaohang17 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This three-body movie, whether it is a mirror or a Tao, is particularly close to the original book. Some people say it is chaotic, but this is the beauty of chaos that Liu Cixin wants to present in the original book. In the face of the unprecedented physical disasters and visions brought by extraterrestrial civilization, Wang Miao's fear and sense of the unknown are vividly expressed with fast and constantly flashing scenes. The soundtrack of the ending English song has a sense of empty inspiration and decadence, which also reflects the decadence in the minds of scientists. I think there is no problem with the soundtrack of the film. The sense of substitution is very strong. It is a three-body film and television work that exceeds expectations.

Could not get past episode 2
alex-vice-grab12 February 2024
The series tries to be faithful to the book, which is a plus, while shuffling the order of events a bit (understandable) to make it watchable.

But the big gripe my wife and I have had is that each episode could have been about half the length, or several episodes could have been compressed into one. The problem being overlong sequences of conversations (e.g. The pool experiment in episode 2) and superfluous bits (main character hallucinating balls and bottles on the street), and random music sequences toward the end of the first few episodes. Just get rid of the fluff and give us the meat. Stop over-digesting the (absolutely excellent) source material.

Spend 30 hours reading the books instead
seanbc-211 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Not sure why so many reviews here say this is such a great adaptation faithful to the books. Maybe in certain aspects, but a major theme and ultimately the driving factor behind the reason to make contact with the aliens is because of what happened during the Chinese cultural revolution, and specifically to that character's family. Sorry but you can't remove the backstory of the cultural revolution and still be "faithful" to the book given that everything that happens is based on that decision. The why is important. Maybe those reviewers read a censored version of the book? Chinese censorship ruined this tv series, even before accounting for all the much too verbose and boring dialogue.

i think this may be the best sci-fi series running.
sncorum16 February 2023
Yes its Chinese, yes you have to read the subs, yes its a slow burner, yes it flips through time lines really fast, yes its all of things but its done quite well, it has its flaws, but its enjoyable.

Stick with it, relax and follow the story, the real story and ask yourself the question, should we really be trying to contact whatever may be out there?

Because, well, you know the chance of anything out there being benign is small, especially small to a planet that has been at war constantly for 3000 years +.

Should we be broadcasting? Should we be answering? Should we be offering information on our planet, people and resources to Alien life forms????

A masterpiece of slow stew
Crystalrecord8 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Before entering the story of the three-body game, you may feel that the pace is slow and the editing is trivial and you lose patience. Many people get off the bus before the tenth episode.

This drama began to show its dew in the episode of human computer. When it came to the nineteenth episode of the mathematician's plot, it began to show amazing philosophical understanding and attraction. The subsequent plot was as fascinating as driving on the highway of 5AAAAA.

A great success is to play the young actor and the old actor of Ye Wenjie respectively. Their acting skills are convincing, just like coming out of a book, and they are also reserved and restrained performances in the East. They have different interpretations at different ages, but they make people believe that they are the same person, especially the old actor, who touches the hearts of the audience.

Episode 29 is the climax of the whole play, which is suffocating. As a book fan, I am very satisfied with this episode.

I was deeply moved by the last episode. Everything was so perfect, including actors, photography and music, that the advertisements in the middle were so annoying that they interrupted all the good continuity.

It appears I am one of the few who has not read the book, but I decided to give this series a go as it sounded interesting and the clip shown on imdb grabbed me.

I did find it difficult in the first few episodes to understand, but the more I watched, the more I understood. This is a very intelligent story being spun from the past to the present.

I am now 18 episodes in and totally hooked. I love the storytelling of young Ye Wenjie and how it all ties in with the present.

The acting overall is very good, with the standouts for me being the actor playing young Ye Wenjie (Ziwen Wang) and the actor playing the role of Xu Bingbing (Zehui Li).

This isn't your typical alien sci-fi show, it's not fast paced, or all action. If that's what your looking for, don't bother with this intellectual show.

The only criticism I have is that the subtitles were too quick to read in places, but that is a minor issue, hence dropping the rating to 9.
