“Bird,” Andrea Arnold’s first narrative feature in almost a decade, has been picked up by Cornerstone Films with the company set to launch the feature at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin.
Little is known about the film, except that it was shot in the U.K. around the Kent area last summer and, like much of Arnold’s work, examines life on the fringes of society. It also stars two of the buzziest actors on the circuit: Barry Keoghan and Franz Rogowski.
Keoghan is currently on a phenomenal run that began with his BAFTA-winning and Oscar-nominated supporting role in “The Banshees of Inisherin” and has continued with a BAFTA-nominated lead turn in Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn” as well as a major part in the recently launched Apple TV+ drama “Masters of the Air.” He reportedly joined “Bird” after leaving the cast of Ridley Scott’s upcoming “Gladiator” sequel,...

With the New Year upon us, it’s time for our annual tradition of looking at the cinematic horizon. Having highlighted 30 films we guarantee are worth seeing this year and those we hope get U.S. distribution, we now venture into the unknown. We dug deep to chart the 100 films we’re most looking forward to, from debuts to documentaries to the return of some of our most-beloved auteurs, along with a small batch of studio films worth giving attention.
Though the majority lack a set release––let alone a confirmed festival premiere––most have wrapped production and will likely debut at some point in 2024. Be sure to check back for updates over the next twelve months (and beyond).

[Editor’s Note: The following story contains spoilers for “Passages.”]
Franz Rogowski’s intense and offbeat appeal gets its purest expression in the despairing polycule at the center of Ira Sachs’ “Passages.” In the Euro-chic romantic drama that recalls Mike Nichols’ “Closer” through the unsentimental lens of a Maurice Pialat film, the German dancer-turned-actor plays solipsistic, emotionally arrested filmmaker Tomas Freibur. On the eve of wrapping his latest film, he strays from his taciturn husband Martin (Ben Whishaw) and into the arms of Agathe (Adèle Exarchopoulos), who, when Tomas later tells her he’s in love with her, replies, “You must say that a lot.”
Rogowski is a physically striking performer, here in great shape in this film after withering as a gay prisoner post-World War II for his European Film Award-nominated turn in 2021’s “Great Freedom.” His filmography has acquainted him closely with the world’s great filmmakers, from Michael Haneke to Terrence Malick (“A Hidden Life”) and Christian Petzold...

German actor Franz Rogowski is on the rise after winning Best Actor from the prestigious New York Film Critics Circle for his performance as a toxic bisexual in Ira Sachs’ “Passages.” The “Happy End” breakout actor’s turn also featured in IndieWire’s Critics Poll of the best films and performances of 2023.
That means you shouldn’t ignore his performance in Giacomo Abbruzzese’s debut feature “Disco Boy,” winner of the 2023 Berlinale’s Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution. In this vividly dreamlike postwar drama, Rogowski plays a Belarusian immigrant haunted by his actions as a mercenary in the French Foreign Legion. Comparisons to Claire Denis’ similarly themed “Beau Travail,” as Ben Croll pointed out in his Berlinale review for IndieWire, are inevitable and apt. After all, there’s a movie that made another unusual European actor — French actor Denis Lavant — an everlasting arthouse favorite.

A24 has forged an exclusive output deal with Happinet Phantom Studios covering the distribution in Japan of A24’s upcoming releases, including Alex Garland’s action film “Civil War,” starring Kirsten Dunst, which has a highly anticipated launch at AFM this week.
Happinet and A24 have worked together on the release of a number of films in Japan, including triple Oscar winner “Moonlight,” and “Midsommar,” whose gross in the territory was the biggest outside North America.
The companies will also build A24 brand awareness across the region, and deepen relationships with local talent and audiences off screen beyond film releases.
This marks A24’s first major international theatrical output deal. In May, Germany’s Leonine Studios and A24 extended their collaboration by establishing the joint label A24 | Leonine Studios in Germany and Austria.

See-Saw Films has unveiled first look images for James Hawes’ “One Life,” which will receive its world premiere as a TIFF special presentation in September.
Written by Lucinda Coxon and Nick Drake, the film is based on the book, “If it’s not impossible… The life of Sir Nicholas Winton” by Barbara Winton.
It tells the true story of Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, a young London banker who, on the eve of World War II, saved 669 children from the Nazis – more than the number of children who survived the Holocaust in Czechoslovakia. With war fast approaching, Winton visited a recently annexed Prague and witnessed first-hand Jewish refugee families with little to no shelter and food. He immediately realized it was a race against time to see how many children he and his friends could rescue before time ran out. Fifty years later, in 1988, Winton is haunted by the fate of...

Kirsten Niehuus, CEO at Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, which funds films and TV series production in the Berlin region, and Simone Baumann, managing director of German Films, which promotes and supports the release of German films abroad, welcomed a wide array of guests to their garden party at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday.
Three Medienboard-funded films are in this year’s Competition: Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania’s “Four Daughters,” Austrian filmmaker Jessica Hausner’s “Club Zero,” and U.S. helmer Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City.”
Niehuus told Variety: “Those are three very different productions, but it shows the spectrum [of films] that Medienboard supports.” Tunisian films, like “Four Daughters,” need international co-production funding to get made, she said, and “we believe in world cinema, so were very happy [to back it].” Hausner is “one of the most impressive female filmmakers [in the world], and I think there should be more female filmmakers on the Croisette and every other ‘A’ festival,...

Pete Davidson, you're doing amazing, sweetie. The Saturday Night Live alum was all smiles in photographs taken while arriving on the set of his upcoming movie Wizards!, which is currently filming in Cairns, Australia. In the Aug. 11 snaps, the comedian cheekily flashed a peace sign and raised his thumb to the photographer. For his day on set, Pete wore a green tank with the number one on it and white basketball shorts. And it seems he took a few style tips from ex-girlfriend Kim Kardashian as he unusually coordinated his look with a matching green baseball cap—which he wore backwards for an added flair—and pink sunglasses. Orlando Bloom is set to be honored by the Location Managers Guild International.
The actor will receive the group’s humanitarian award at the upcoming ninth annual Lmgi Awards, held Aug. 27 at the Los Angeles Center Studios. Comedian Melissa Peterman will host the ceremony and gala.

Kim Kardashian is apparently very displeased that her ex-husband, Kanye West, was celebrating her recent split from the comedian Pete Davidson.
West has threatened Davidson in the past and uploaded one last petty Instagram post of a fake newspaper clipping that read “Skete Davidson Dead At Age 28,” before wiping his account again over the weekend.
A source told The Daily Mail that Kardashian “won’t stand for” the post and had been repeatedly “demanding” that he remove it.
West apparently refused several times but since his profile his clear now he must have eventually relented. This is an odd way to treat the woman you reportedly want to get back with.
Davidson and Kardashian amicably split last week, with sources saying conflicting schedules “weighed into their decision but they do love and respect each other.”
Davidson is currently filming a lead role in the movie Wizards! in Australia.

Just days after multiple reports confirmed Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson's breakup, there's news about why the couple reportedly split. On Aug. 6, a source told Entertainment Tonight that "the spark between them" had "faded" after their relationship went long distance.
"Pete and Kim broke up. The distance has been hard and things were starting to fizzle out," the source told Et. "Pete being away for so long was hard for them. Kim is doing well and she knows she has a lot going on. Pete has been super busy as well."
Davidson has been busy filming the upcoming movie "Wizards!" in Australia, while Kardashian is based in Los Angeles. However, it reportedly wasn't just the distance that led to the breakup. It seems Kardashian wasn't quite ready to settle down so soon after the end of her marriage to Kanye West.
"They had tons of chemistry, and still do,...

Pete Davidson is letting his outfit do the talking. On Aug, 6, the former Saturday Night Live star was photographed for the first time since the news broke that he and girlfriend Kim Kardashian split after nine months of dating. While on the set of his upcoming film Wizards! in Cairns, Australia, Pete was snapped wearing a green trucker hat with the movie's title written on it, teamed with a graphic t-shirt featuring the eyebrow-raising message, "What... I feel like s--t." The day before, sources confirmed to E! News that Pete, 28 and Kim, 41—who were first romantically linked in October 2021—ended their relationship earlier this week and...

Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson have broken up after nine Instagram-perfect months together – or so E! News sources say – and social media had a field day Friday making pretty much the same joke about Kanye West rushing to his ex-wife’s side faster than you can say “Ye.”
According to E!, the lovebirds have decided to just be friends because of their busy schedules and Kardashian being a West coaster and Davidson an East coast kinda guy “made it really difficult to maintain a relationship.” Davidson has spent a large chunk of the summer in Australia filming “Wizards!” while Kardashian has remained in Los Angeles, raising her four children with West.
Reps for Kardashian and Davidson didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.
But don’t rush to assume the Pete-Kim breakup means she’s getting back together with Yeezy. “The divorce is moving ahead with Kanye,” another insider shares with E!

Perhaps distance makes the heart grow fonder. Such seems to be the case for Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson, who have been physically separated since last month while the comedian is filming the movie Wizards! in Australia. Though the Skims founder was spotted taking a brief trip down under to visit her boyfriend for the weekend, she remains mostly at home near Los Angeles with her four kids. Despite the many miles between the couple, a source close to Kim tells E! News that their relationship has remained unaffected. "The distance hasn't been an issue for Kim and Pete's relationship while he's been away filming," the insider shares. "They are still going strong and making it...
