“We have to do something,” says one of the many shadowy extremists who populate the fringes of Mike Ott’s tense drama McVeigh, a condensed account of the events that led Timothy McVeigh, an Iraq war veteran, to blow up the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma on 19 April 1995, killing 168 people and injuring 680 more. His close ties to white supremacist Richard Snell, a convicted murderer put to death by lethal injection that same day, might — reasonably — lead one, and especially people of color, to wonder why this man needs the oxygen of publicity, nearly 23 years after his own execution. But Mike Ott’s film is a rare study of the radicalization of white working-class Americans, a phenomenon that went overground in Washington DC on 6 January 2021.
Ott carefully keeps us at arm’s length from his subject at all times, and his direction makes that clear from the outset. When we’re not following McVeigh,...

The first trailer has been released for the upcoming Iraq war thriller The Yellow Birds. The film has a talented cast of actors that includes Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story), Tye Sheridan (Ready Player One), Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), Jason Patric, Toni Collette, and Jennifer Aniston.
I didn't get a chance to see this film at Sundance this year, but I heard good things about it. I like what I'm seeing in this trailer and it looks like a great film worth watching for those of you who are into war dramas.
Twenty-one-year-old Bartle (Ehrenreich) and 18-year-old Murph (Sheridan) become fast friends in army training before shipping off to fight insurgents in Iraq. Taken under the wing of a hot-headed sergeant (Huston), they wander into the fog of war, but Murph never comes back. Alexandre Moors’ Blue Caprice was a harrowing, stunningly-shot depiction of the D.C. sniper attacks. The director made his return at last year’s Sundance with the war/Ptsd drama The Yellow Birds, co-written by David Lowery, and now it’s finally getting a release some 17 months later. The delay seems to be two-fold as we imagine the distributors were waiting for its star, Alden Ehrenreich, to have his Solo break-out, and also, the drama comes up short.
Dan Mecca said in his review, “Moors is a filmmaker with immense talent, as demonstrated in his Sundance film Blue Caprice from a few years back, but the beats don’t quite align this time around. This kind of film is important and should be made and made often. Perhaps the problem is that this kind of film has been made, and made often, and made a bit better.”

"Promise me you'll take care of him over there." Saban Films has unveiled an official Us trailer for an indie war drama titled The Yellow Birds, which first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last year (not this year). This is the second film from director Alexandre Moors, who last made the acclaimed Blue Caprice. The film follows Brandon Bartle, played by Alden Ehrenreich, and the difficulties he faces in keeping his humanity, his urge to survive and his friend Murph, played by Tye Sheridan, alive during the war in Iraq, as well as his life and struggles with his memories of the war after he comes back to Virginia. The cast includes Jennifer Aniston, Toni Collette, Jason Patric, Jack Huston, Lee Tergesen, and Robert Pralgo. Yet another one of these Iraq war films about how bad it is. War, of course, is hell. We know this, but it stands that we should be reminded now and again. With The Yellow Birds, filmmaker Alexandre Moors tries to find beauty in the brutality. From a screenplay by David Lowery and R.F.I. Porto and based on the novel by Kevin Powers, the film centers on two young soldiers, Brandon Bartle (Alden Ehrenreich) and Daniel Murphy (Tye Sheridan), in the thick of the Iraq War.
Taking orders from the intense and unstable Sergeant Sterling (Jack Huston, doing a lot here, for better and worse), Bartle and Murphy become fast friends. At a family event, Murphy’s mother Maureen (Jennifer Aniston, also on as executive producer) meets Bartle and asks that he look after her son. This interaction underlines the conflict to come.

Many movies, fiction and non-fiction, have been made about the second Iraq war. The best one was, oddly enough, a documentary: 2007’s No End In Sight. As far as fiction goes, though, none really “got” the war. Maybe they all came out too early and the war needed a little more digesting and thought, but the lack of a thoroughly made and informative depiction has yet to emerge.
Of course, one can say that none captured the tension and confusion of the war the way Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker did back in 2009. However, the film never mentioned the word “Iraq” and chose to not disclose its setting. Bigelow’s effort noted that “war is a drug,” and in fact its protagonist had such a rush at defusing bombs that he rather be shipped off to the middle East than spend any time with his own family.

An excellent novel about the Iraq War and its homefront fallout has been turned into a rather flat and disappointing film in The Yellow Birds. Principally the story of two working class privates and how the death of one of them produces waves of incalculable trauma and incomprehension among his survivors, the story has been skewed significantly from the book to concentrate more on those left behind, a puzzling move in that it lessens the tale’s structural power and aching ambiguity. Critical support from enthusiasts of director Alexandre Moors’ previous feature, the 2013 Sundance entry Blue Caprice, will doubtless launch...

Later this week, Lrm will be attending this year’s Sundance Film Festival. While the festival tends to be a mixed bag of indie films, some will be picked up for distribution by studios and turned into mainstream hits, others will flounder and be lucky to get a VOD release. Even so, there’s no denying that Sundance is the real beginning of the year for most movie lovers as we’ll be talking about the movies below for the next 12 months.
Last year alone, Sundance held the premieres for The Birth of a Nation, Manchester by the Sea, Captain Fantastic, Love and Friendship, The Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Sing Street and many more films, some that appeared on The Weekend Warrior’s year-end Top 25. One or two of those might even receive Oscar nominations when they’re announced next week on January 24.

What if we lived in a world where the norm is to be homosexual and heterosexuality is taboo? How would we react to societal transgressions? The new film “Love Is All You Need?” embraces that premise and explores a “Romeo and Juliet”-like story between a Middle American star quarterback and a male sports journalist that rock a small town to its very core, setting off a series of catastrophic events that will forever change the community. Based on the 19-minute short film of the same name that sparked controversy around the country, the film tackles bullying and prejudice head on, examining our most fundamental biases. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit the interwebs. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Ant-Man (Peyton Reed)
Having continually proven that they can repackage the same general structure and archetypes into their cinematic universe for increasing box-office returns, Marvel’s impetus to think completely outside the box is not strong. With varying creative results, Guardians of the Galaxy proved that the right ingredients in the formula can result in an entertaining ride, while the over-stuffed Age of Ultron did little more then exhaust.

We can't wait for Netflix's November 20th debut of "Marvel's Jessica Jones" starring Krysten Ritter as a superhero who becomes a private detective. The noirish series, which received a great reception at New York Comic Con, costars Carrie-Anne Moss and former Dr. Who David Tennant.
Other Netflix originals premiering in November: "River," starring Stellan Skarsgård as a detective haunted by visions of his murdered colleague; the Aziz Ansari comedy series "Master of None;" and "W/Bob and David," which re-teams Bob Odenkirk and David Cross.
As for movies, you might have missed Keira Knightley in "Anna Karenina" (2012), which first paired "Ex Machina's" Alicia Vikander and Domhnall Gleeson. Also new, Nicolas Cage's "The Runner" and documentaries "Idris Elba: Mandela, My Dad and Me," "Call Me Lucky" and "Do I Sound Gay?"

His cold, steely biopic Blue Caprice might have not received the same fanfare as Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, but both were nonetheless stellar offerings at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival (here was my recap). A project that we could perhaps lump into the same category as Oren Moverman’s The Messenger was originally mounted at Cannes has changed its components of its line-up, Variety reports that The Yellow Birds now sees Alexandre Moors replace David Lowery in the director’s chair, while Jack Huston replaces Benedict Cumberbatch in the role of Sergeant Sterling in an Iraq war drama that includes Jennifer Aniston, Tye Sheridan and Alden Ehrenreich. Story Mining and Supply Co. CEO-president Jeffrey Sharp and Evan Hayes (The Circle) are producing along with Cinelou Films’ Courtney Solomon and Mark Canton (Cake). Jim Kohlberg (The Music Never Stopped) will executive produce.

According to a new report, Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire) and Jennifer Aniston (Friends) have joined the cast of upcoming Iraq war drama, The Yellow Birds. Huston’s role was originally set to be taken by Benedict Cumberbatch, but the actor departed not too long ago, likely because his schedule is becoming increasingly busy and Doctor Strange is now on the horizon.
David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints) was originally supposed to be directing this one from his own script, which revolves around two young soldiers – Tye Sheridan and Alden Ehrenreich – who are taken under the wing of an older sergeant, played by Huston, as they’re deployed to Iraq. Aniston is portraying the mother of Ehrenreich’s character. Now, however, Alexandre Moors (Blue Caprice) will take the helm.

We all would like to believe that we have that someone special to look up to for guidance and direction. From time to time we practice the art of worship for the mentor that appears larger than life to us. Whether our designated mentors that we choose to follow are inspirational or insidious it does not matter because that yearning to follow in their footsteps are so great that we blindly give anything to replicate that original blueprint.
Maybe if one dreams of being a famous astronaut you designate Neii Armstrong or John Glenn as your mentoring heroes? Perhaps your foray into film criticism was ignited by Judith Crist, Vincent Canby or Siskel & Ebert? How about emulating your favorite actor or singer and following their paths to success?

Cinema deviants can come in all forms or variety. It is just a matter of taking your pick as to what kind of deviant you consider. Perhaps your preference of deviant is of the sexual or molesting persuasion? Or maybe in the arena of hustlers or swindlers or cheaters? Will notorious gangsters and corrupt officials fit the bill for your definition of legitimate deviant sources?
The one type of deviant prototype that no one can question or disregard in terms of an impacting impression is the serial killer…or any killer where the impulse to slaughter is mindless fun or in some cases a perverse release to punish society for their own inner psychological demons and despair.

However, can one come up with color-contained movie titles that also carry some messaging of substance and contemplation?
