The Voice UK kicked off its all-important battles with a two-hour spectacular tonight, as 24 acts got paired up for 12 bouts in the ring. As Sir Tom Jones pointed out, "no biting" and "no kicking" was allowed - instead it was (surprise!) all about the voice.
With each coach being granted two steals this series, it was all to play for, all bets were off and it was all going down to the wire. Right, that's enough sporting phrases - let's get the ball rolling! (Sorry.)

She’s ready for her close-up! Madonna is the red-lipped, cat-eyed face of Rolling Stone's March 2015 issue. In the mag, she gets candid about her true feelings towards Lady Gaga, Kanye West and more.
When asked about Lady Gaga, the 56-year-old said, “I don’t think she wants my crown. We live in a world where people like to pit women against each other. And this is why I love the idea of embracing other females who are doing what I’m doing.”
She also addressed comparisons between her 1989 single, "Express Yourself" and Mother Monster's 2011 hit, "Born This Way." “The only time I ever criticized Lady Gaga was when I felt like she blatantly ripped off one of my songs," she said. "It’s got nothing to do with ‘she’s taking my crown’ or ‘she’s in some space of mine.’ She has her thing. I do think she...

Well, that's one way to break the Internet. Madonna took a nasty spill Wednesday night while closing out the Brit Awards in London with her new hit "Living for Love." The blame falls squarely on her risky fashion choice: Her flowing, matador-style cape pulled the Material Girl backward during the number. Madonna sprang right back to her feet, and the show went on. Thankfully, the 56-year-old pop icon took to Instagram shortly after the accident to assure everyone that she's safe. "Armani hooked me up! My beautiful cape was tied too tight!" she explained. "But nothing can stop me and love really lifted me up!

That supposed Madonna and Lady Gaga feud… "boring," says Madge!
The pop star opened up in the new Rolling Stone about a rumored feud with Gaga that ignited after Madonna called out Gaga's "Born This Way" for sounding a lot like her 1989 hit, "Express Yourself."
"I don't think she wants my crown," Madonna said Gaga. "We live in a world where people like to pit women against each other. And this is why I love the idea of embracing other females who are doing what I'm doing."

Madonna has finally admitted to her issue with Lady Gaga.
In a candid new interview with Rolling Stone, the 56-year-old "Living for Love" singer explains her beef with the 28-year-old "Applause" singer, who recently charmed audiences with her surprisingly understated The Sound of Music tribute at the Oscars.
"The only time I ever criticized Lady Gaga was when I felt like she blatantly ripped off one of my songs," Madonna says bluntly. "It's got nothing to do with 'she's taking my crown' or 'she's in some space of mine.' She has her thing. I do think she's a very talented singer and songwriter. It was just that one issue."
Madonna is clearly referring to Gaga's hit "Born This Way," whose similar sound to "Express Yourself" is undeniable. Some suspected that her leaked song "Two Steps Behind Me" was a thinly veiled diss at Gaga, with the lyrics reading, "You're a copycat, Where is my royalty...

Madonna's new video "Living for Love" debuted on Snapchat (?!?) yesterday, but we finally get to see it on YouTube in all its bull-baiting glory. Check it out. I'd say it's her best single video since "Hung Up." Here are 10 reasons it rules. 1. That unusual choreography with all of its masculine posturing and grappling. It's like if Madonna joined the man-slave brawl at the end of the "Express Yourself" video. 2. That matador costume is gorgeous. Madonna's idols Frida Kahlo and Marlene Dietrich would both covet it. 3. This is her Annie Lennox "Diva" moment. She's accepting the role of a veteran and playing on familiar imagery from her career ("Take a Bow," specifically) without forfeiting any of her signature nerve, headmistress grandeur, or ingenuity. She's a raging stateswoman strutting on broken glass. 4. The song's hymn vibe is a perfect match for the studied, solemn movements of a matador. 5. She looks incredible.

I hadn't seen David Fincher's Gone Girl before creating this list. I felt I'd let his latest film simmer for a bit before attempting to figure out where exactly it fit within a filmography that now spans 22 years. I must also confess to being a David Fincher fanboy. It was Fincher's films before any other that got me to start looking at the way movies were made and who was making them rather than simply consuming one after the other. His leaning toward dark and brooding material is as much about his taste in the movies he makes and his approach to movie making. Even with films such as The Social Network, looking at the fellas behind the creation of Facebook, Fincher delivers a dark, moody and atmospheric piece of cinema. But let's not spoil the conversation of each film before getting to the list. What follows is...

Glenn here to discuss a lil something from 1989, but first a divergence to the modern day.
Last night’s MTV Video Music Awards were like stepping into a pop culture gulag. It’s easy to get misty-eyed thinking about Vma ceremonies of years past, when the network actually showed music videos and the form felt truly like art. Despite being aware of last night’s winner, “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus the icky Terry Richardson, I don’t claim to have near enough knowledge of modern music videos to truly complain. It does seem harder to imagine Neil Young, Peter Gabriel, or Pearl Jam winning these days though, doesn’t it? Are there brilliant works that just aren’t being recognized?
It’s been some time since videos were genuine pop culture moments and the internet certainly doesn’t help. Beyoncé appears to be the only one who’s been...

RuPaul’s Drag Race kicked off its sixth season with seven contestants battling it out for six available spots in part one of the premiere.
Next week, the premiere will conclude with seven more contestants being put to the test, and finally in week three the surviving 12 will come together for the competition. The two-part premiere is not the only trick RuPaul had up her sleeve. Another big change this season is there will be absolutely no immunity from eliminations.
First things first, RuPaul opened the show with her usual flair and introduced us to the Queens:
Adore Delano, aka Danny Noriega, is perhaps one of the less experienced of the contestants, but she has enough sass to fill any room. Noriega is no stranger to reality tv competition. He was a contestant on Season 7 of American Idol.

Lady Gaga knows how to make fun of herself.
If there was one takeaway from last night’s show, it was that Lady Gaga knows what you all are saying about her. And in the constant jostling for pop-culture supremacy, one of Gaga’s advantages has been that, when she allows it, she often comes across as a down-to-earth goofball. And happily, last night viewers mostly got the silly theater kid and not the art-house provocateur, which led to an overall enjoyable 90 minutes that, while not always laugh-out-loud hilarious, was consistently amusing.

Every once in a while, I’ll hear a song on the radio for the first time and think, “Haven’t I heard this before?” In other words, these songs have nothing to do with each other; they aren’t remakes, covers, or remixes of the original song but still sound eerily similar.

Madonna held court at New York's Paris Theatre June 18, where she debuted the much-anticipated film version of her Mdna World Tour before a packed house of fellow stars and die-hard fans.
The Queen of Pop channeled Marlene Dietrich's iconic "Morocco" look in men's trousers, a tuxedo jacket and top hat. As Madonna later pointed out, it was an inspired choice (if one the star has previously embraced throughout her career) as Dietrich herself was present at the Paris Theatre's 1948 opening.
An unseasonably chilly rainstorm did little to deter the throng of die-hard fans, who huddled outside the theater for hours in advance of Madonna's arrival. Also in attendance at the premiere, which was hosted by the Cinema Society and Dolce & Gabbana, were Kelly Osbourne, Nicky Hilton, Martha Stewart, Andy Cohen and longtime Madonna pal Debi Mazar, among other celebs.

N.W.A.'s "Express Yourself" centers on freedom of expression and radio censorship. Madonna's "Express Yourself" is about empowerment and never settling. Danny Brown's "Express Yourself" is about bouncing asses. To be fair, the Trampy-produced track is inspired by Diplo's own butt-empowering "Express Yourself" featuring Nicky Da B. "Spread your legs and watch your back," it vamps. Back-watching is actually fairly difficult, particularly when one is on the floor... So anyway, Immaculate Noise favorite Brown has the perfect alto whine in his rhymes for the bumping, purring tone of the track, like he and the keys are in call-and-response. Remember when Madonna not only had her thumb on the pulse of what was hot, but she actually set the trends herself? Well, long gone are the days of "Vogue."
The aging pop star, who seems increasingly desperate to remain relevant -- even if it means attaching her name to the back of a younger icon (Lady Gaga, anyone?) -- has sunk to a new low. Since her nipple and buttocks baring antics on the "Mdna" world tour haven't gotten her the spotlight she so craves, Madge invited someone who is getting attention -- Korean rapper Psy -- to perform with her at New York's Madison Square Garden.
That's right, folks. The purported Queen of Pop did "Gangnam Style." Now that every other celebrity on earth and your mom have done the horsey dance, Madonna jumped on the bandwagon, performing a mashup of the viral hit and her track, "Give It To Me.

So take that, Lady Gaga!” Madonna told the crowd at her concert in St. Paul, Minn., before revealing that she had reached out to Gaga. “You know, I invited her onstage to sing with me. But, she turned me down. It's okay. I've been rejected before. It builds a little character."
Gaga's rep didn't respond when The Huffington Post reached out for comment.

Madonna's recent appearance on Ellen had several noteworthy moments, including Ellen's cool anecdote about how Madonna reached out to her during the "Yep, I'm Gay" era, a dunk tank game with Madonna's 12-year-old son Rocco, and this provocative clip where Ellen asked Madonna to comment about her fellow pop stars. How'd she do? And more importantly, do we agree? Let's grade Madonna's responses on a scale from 1-10.
Hit it, Ellen!
On Britney: "Good kisser. Sorry, I had to say that."
Score: 7/10. Cheeky enough, and I'm glad she knows referencing that god-awful PR stunt is a little cringe-inducing.
On Katy Perry: "Haven't kissed her."
Score: 5/10. Not descriptive at all, but it accidentally alludes to Katy's first single "I Kissed A Girl," so I grant Madonna charity points. Couldn't she have said something related to cupcake bras or that contrived-ass Louise Brooks haircut?
On Beyonce: "Incredible voice.

Madonna‘s concerts are just full of action these days. Whether she’s calling Obama a “black Muslim” or flashing audiences everwhere from Rome to Istanbul — butt-cheek and nipple even distributed, natch — Queen Madge really loves her spotlight, doesn’t she? Why else would she keep harping on and on about Lady Gaga ripping off Express Yourself and turning it into Born This Way, over and over again. Anyway, karma has a funny way of evening the snark out. Because there’s nothing quite as embarrasing as eating stage in fromnt of thousands of people. Because that’s exactly what happened to Madonna while she was performing at the Dallas leg of her Mdna tour show at the American Airlines Center. This happened over the weekend but stayed hush till this awesome video just surfaced. Watch around the 33 second mark for the real action.

Madonna released her first single 30 years ago. That means she's officially been a part of the danceteria that is our collective subconscious for three decades. Damn. The only proper way to celebrate is with a photographic timeline, a one-a-year retrospective of Madonna's defining images, videos, and pop culture moments per year. Let's jump from 1982 to 2012 in 30 fabulous photos.
1982: The spiky journey begins.
1983: A lucky star is born.
1984: The "boy toy" bombards the '84 VMAs
1985: Never been healthier.
1986: Herb Ritts captures Madonna at her truest and bluest
1987: "La Isla Ciccone"

Madonna wants Lady Gaga to perform with her. The 'Give Me All Your Luvin'' singer has invited the eccentric pop superstar to join her on stage during her 'Mdna Tour', despite previously accusing her of copying elements of her song 'Express Yourself' in her single 'Born This Way'. Gaga's writer-and-producer Vincent Herbert revealed: 'Madonna just called to ask Gaga to perform with her at Yankee Stadium. Her manager reached out to us and said Madonna would like Gaga to perform with her.' Madonna was so desperate to have Gaga, 26, join her that she even promised to give the money raised to charity. Unluckily for the 54-year-old music legend, Gaga's own work schedule meant she couldn't accept her offer.

Madonna caused quite a stir on Monday night in Washington D.C. when she called President Barack Obama a "black Muslim" while urging fans to vote for him in November.
"Y'all better vote for f--king Obama, Ok? For better or for worse, all right? We have a black Muslim in the White House. Now that's some amazing s--t," she said. "It means there is hope in this country. And Obama is fighting for gay rights, so support the man, goddamnit."
Obama is, of course, Christian, not Muslim. On Tuesday, Madonna clarified her statements through a representative.
“I was being ironic on stage,” the pop icon said. “Yes, I know Obama is not a Muslim -- though I know that plenty of people in this country think he is. And what if he were? The point I was making is that a good man is a good man, no matter who he prays to.

Perhaps Lady Gaga was tired of Madonna grabbing all the touring headlines -- not to mention those onstage mashups of "Express Yourself" and "Born This Way." Madonna took a moment out of her Saturday show in Atlantic City to borrow some relevance from send a message to Lady Gaga. The Material Girl told the crowd she wanted to dedicate her song, "Masterpiece," to none other than Mother Monster.
Here's Madonna's benediction: "I'm going to dedicate this next song … to Lady Gaga. You wanna know something? I love her. I love her. I do love her. Imitation is the highest form of flattery. But one day, very soon, we're going to be on stage together. Just you wait. You think I'm kidding? I love Lady Gaga."
Madonna had previously covered Gaga's "Born This Way," which has been compared to "Express Yourself," a hit off Madonna's 1989 album, Like a Prayer. She also called "Born This Way" "reductive" in an interview .

Philadelphia — As she kicked off the U.S. leg of her "Mdna Tour" in Philadelphia, Madonna said she was happy to party in the USA after touring Europe for three months.
The pop icon told the crowd Tuesday night they should "never forget how lucky you are to live where you live and to have the freedom that you have." She made the comments after talking about the arrest of three members of the punk-rock female band Pussy Riot. The women were sentenced to two years in prison after performing a "punk prayer" at Moscow's Christ the Savior cathedral in which they called on the Virgin Mary to deliver Russia from its leader, Vladimir Putin.
"In my travels around the world the one thing I truly witnessed is we in America have freedom of speech, freedom of expression," the singer said.

So, get this: I have reverence for the MTV Music Video Awards. If you check their history of winners (and ignore some key, depressing anomalies), they routinely honor the correct people. Since this year's ceremony on September 6 is just a couple of weeks away, we're celebrating with a new celebration of the VMAs' past: a list of the best 10 winners of the coveted "Best Female Video" trophy. For a refresher course in the history of the category, check this out. For a definitive list of the best lady videos' of the past 30 years, check below.
10. Cyndi Lauper, "Girls Just Want to Have Fun"
She's so unusual, indeed -- Cyndi Lauper whipped her block into a swishy, she-bopping frenzy in "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," and while her punky chutzpah certainly warranted MTV award credibility, she deserved every award for out-snarling Elvis and offering killer pipes, to boot.

Pop superstar Madonna has again added her voice to the chorus of international outrage over the conviction of Russian punk band Pussy Riot on charges of hooliganism. Three members of the feminist music group were sentenced to two years in prison Friday for performing an anti-Putin "punk prayer" in a Russian cathedral.
Madonna issued a statement Saturday condemning Pussy Riot's conviction and urging other artists to speak out in support of the band. Her full statement follows below:
"I protest the conviction and sentencing of Pussy Riot to a penal colony for two years for a 40 second performance extolling their political opinions. Even if one disagrees with the location or how they chose to express themselves, the sentence is too harsh and in fact is inhumane. I call on all those who love freedom to condemn this unjust punishment. I urge artists around the world to speak up in protest against this travesty.

Lady Gaga has had a difficult year. In a revealing letter to her "sweet fans" posted on her Little Monsters website, the pop star details a number of personal and professional challenges, including struggles with her body image, conflicts with her record label and betrayals by friends and mentors -- including a veiled reference to her fallout with Madonna.
"Today is a really happy day for me," writes the Monster Monster. "The past year was a challenge, and I'm so happy to have my spirit back. I felt in chains at times. Whether [it] be the record label disagreeing with me on single choices, or directors who could only create an idea of 'gaga' or what i've 'done before' and not able to move forward, and there was also of course the incessant dragging of the most important single of my career in dead-beaten-horse-mud."

Gwyneth Paltrow has denied any involvement in the supposed feud between Madonna and Lady GaGa. Apparent tensions between the pop stars reportedly reached an all-time high in July when Madonna highlighted similarities between her hit 'Express Yourself' and GaGa's 'Born This Way' on her 'Mdna Tour'. Madonna later told Brazilian television that she had obviously "helped GaGa write" the chart-topping hit. There's certainly no love lost between Sir Elton John and Madonna. Back in 2004, John accused Madonna of lip syncing during her Re-Invention Tour (said John at the time, "Anyone who lip-synchs in public on stage when you pay $134 to see them should be shot") and has continued through this year. In January, he told Good Morning America that he hoped Madonna would "lip sync good" during the Super Bowl halftime show. John's husband, David Furnish, even got into a scuffle with the Queen of Pop at this year's Golden Globe ceremonies. "I like Madonna's music, but not her movies," Furnish said after John lost to Madonna in the Best Original Song category. "She should stick to what she is good at."
Now John is apparently at it again. In a new interview with Molly Medrum on Australia's Channel 7 (video of which is not online), the iconic singer reportedly blasted Madonna,...

We all love it when Madonna throws her personal brand of ice-cold shade, but this whole situation is getting out of control. “I’m glad I could help her write it,” Madge smirked during a Brazilian TV interview, after being asked her opinion of Lady Gaga‘s “Born This Way.” Ah, the chill! It burns! Seeing as how we’ve heard this exact snark before, we guess Madge is content to openly rip on Gaga whenever it amuses her? Seriously, how many times has Madonna actual brought up the “Born This Way”/’Express Yourself” beef in public? We tallied them up, and the number is starting to get absurd:
She danced it our at rehearsal: At a rehearsal for her March Tel Aviv concert, Madonna danced seamlessly from “Express Yourself” to “Born This Way.” Clever, but still..mega-shade. Pointed out how similar the songs sound: “I thought, What a wonderful way to redo my song.

We’re beginning to think Madonna may have a bit of a problem with Lady Gaga.
The Queen of Pop, who is clearly no stranger to controversy, first commented on similarities between Gaga’s anthem "Born This Way" and her own 1989 single "Express Yourself" earlier this year, famously calling "Born This Way" "reductive" during an interview with ABC News. She now performs a mash-up of the two songs on her current world tour, ending the medley with the chorus to her song "She’s Not Me," about an inferior woman trying to steal her style. Hey, no one ever accused her of being subtle.
In case we didn’t already get the message, Madonna recently joked in an interview with a Brazilian TV show, “I’m a really big fan of [‘Born This Way’]. I’m glad that I helped Gaga write it.”

I like having an easy comeback for that incessantly rebooted complaint: "Madonna's not talented!" For me, it strikes the same chord as "Women aren't funny," because in order to spew such a statement, you have to want to believe it, and you have to ignore obvious conflicting facts. And I don't know why you'd want to, because the formula for Madonna's success is simple and respectable: She's Elvis with brains.
She has all of The Pelvis' swagger, confrontational stage presence, carnal urgency, and underlying soulfulness.
