The animated X-Men are about to make their return to TV in "X-Men '97." This Disney+ series is basically a thirty-year-late sixth season of 1992's "X-Men," the first cartoon about the Marvel Comics superhero team.
The "X-Men" comics kept chugging along through highs and lows while their animated counterparts were in limbo, though. At SXSW 2024, Marvel previewed the comics' future. A relaunch is coming to "X-Men" in Summer 2024 under the banner "From The Ashes," the follow-up to the ongoing "Fall of X." There'll be three primary series at first:
"X-Men" by Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman. Cyclops and Magneto will lead a traditional X-Men superhero team based in Alaska.
"Uncanny X-Men" by Gail Simone and David Marquez. "Outlaw" lovebirds Gambit and Rogue head to New Orleans with Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Jubilee in tow.
"Extraordinary X-Men" by Eve Ewing and Carmen Carnero. Set in Chicago, Kitty Pryde and Emma Frost...

The origins of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" begin with the X-Men. A young Joss Whedon read their comic adventures, penned by Chris Claremont, and cites them as an influence on his work; teen heroine Buffy Summers herself is in the vein of Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat.
From 2004 to 2008, Whedon wrote the ongoing comic "Astonishing X-Men," teaming up with artist John Cassaday. Consider the timeframe: "Buffy" and "Angel" had wrapped as classics, "Firefly" was a freshly canceled-too-soon martyr, and Whedon hadn't cracked into the blockbuster movie mainstream with "The Avengers" yet, and allegations of his abusive behavior on set hadn't yet been publicized. His writing an "X-Men" comic felt like nerdy stars aligning.
Is "Astonishing X-Men" worth checking out? It's short and self-contained, which are rare blessings in superhero comics. Whedon also works overtime to repair the reputation of Scott Summers/Cyclops. In the concurrent "X-Men" movies, he was used only...

“What would you prefer, yellow spandex?” When James Marsden’s Cyclops delivered that line in 2000’s X-Men, we all got the joke. The yellow spandex sported by Wolverine and other members of Marvel’s Merry Band of Mutants could never look cool in a live-action movie, which is why the black leather costumes made more sense. But even the most understanding movie-goer couldn’t help but feel a slight pang at the quip. “Yeah,” we thought to ourselves. “We would prefer Wolverine in yellow spandex.”
According to a recently-released photo from Deadpool 3, fans are finally getting their wish. We’ve long known that the third Deadpool movie will bring the Merc with a Mouth from the Fox movie universe where he began, over to the MCU. And we’ve also known that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine would be coming along for the ride, the character’s first appearance in the MCU.

A new clip from the upcoming Disney+ mini series “Secret Invasion” was released online Thursday, and in addition to the espionage-related paranoia and suspicion featured in the clip itself, it also gave fans a chance to do some spycraft of their own just to watch the thing.
The clip — what feels like an entire scene from the show, featuring Martin Freeeman as ex-CIA agent Everett Ross — wasn’t posted to YouTube or on Twitter. Instead, Marvel Studios’ official Twitter account asked fans to decipher a mystery board that revealed a password to the site “theinvasionhasbegun.com,” allowing them to unlock an “encrypted” file on the site.

The timeline for a successful video game franchise usually goes like this: The game comes out and soon becomes popular among players. Avid fans start creating content inspired by the game and their favorite characters, helping bring that IP into pop culture. There might be a movie or TV adaptation. And as more people are introduced to the game’s world, more fans are created, leading to more demand for derivative content. Et cetera, et cetera.
But the leaders at Liithos, a multimedia gaming studio led by former PlayStation executives, are about to do things a little differently with their first studio IP, Ashfall, which is set in a post-apocalyptic Pacific Northwest ravaged by climate change, civilian fighting and mutations caused by a dark energy. The series follows Ash Naranjo, a character who was born without arms and is given cyborg-like implants to help him save his family and homeland.

Wolverine #21 Writer: Benjamin Percy | Artist: Adam Kubert | Colourist: Frank Martin | Letters: Cory Petit
Wolverine continues to reject Deadpool’s over enthusiastic X-Force audition. But as the pair find themselves at loggerheads the net is closing in on them, from one side comes Danger and from the other a double/double cross.
While I did have some personal ups and downs with the previous issue, it did have a great cliffhanger and in my opinion this issue didn’t capitalize on it. I think this in part was due to the non-linear storytelling approach. I am all for Deadpool in the Wolverine series, but maybe him leading the narration, scribbling over the credits page and having the text page from Weasel is all a bridge too far? The fact that Percy does address Deadpool’s more than central role via the fourth wall breaking perhaps indicates he has pushed it as far as he possibly can.

This article contains spoilers for WandaVision episodes one and two.
Now that WandaVision is finally streaming on Disney+, Marvel fans have plenty of questions about what’s really going on in the MCU spinoff series, and we’re here to help!
In the opening two episodes of WandaVision, Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and her beloved Vision (Paul Bettany) settle down in the quaint town of Westview to start a new chapter of their lives amidst various amusing sitcom tropes. The familiar black and white aesthetic from TV past creates an upbeat tone for Scarlet Witch and the previously extremely dead Vision to play cutesy games of husband and wife, but there is also a creeping presence from outside this strange new reality, one that is determined to break through Wanda’s fourth wall – that of Sword.

It’s been a difficult few months for the comics industry, as Covid-19 has virtually brought distribution to a halt, and put many stores at risk of permanent closure. With the main distributor Diamond unable to supply comics, it’s been a stressful time for fans and those running businesses, regardless of size. However, Marvel Comics have now announced that they’re planning to start releasing new issues from Wednesday, May 27th, in what should hopefully be a resumption of some kind of normalcy to the industry.
While it doesn’t seem like Marvel will jump straight back into shipping out its full schedule for distribution, there will be at least some individual titles and trades from the end of May. And here are the books that Marvel are currently aiming to put out on the 27th:
Amazing Spider-man #43 (FEB200924)
Avengers #33 (FEB200982)
Marauders #10 (FEB200894)

It's no secret that it's a great time to be a fan of superhero storytelling. The biggest, most expensive movies in the world are about superheroes, and we're getting to a point in comic book adaptation culture that even some of the medium's more obscure characters are making their way onto TV screens.
But we don't talk enough about how the trend has spilled over into fiction. From Sarah Kuhn's Heroine Complex series to V.E. Schwab's Villains series to Lauren Shippen's recent The Infinite Noise, there are increasing examples of character-driven superpowered stories in the literary world and, like all media, there are ways in which this...

We’re a ways away from seeing the X-Men on the big screen again, but this epic concept art could give us an idea of how much the wait will be worth it. Former Disney visual artist Jason Pastrana has shared his latest piece – seen down below – which imagines how three of mutantkind’s finest heroes could look given a Marvel Studios twist.
The image captures Wolverine, Cyclops and Storm in the heat of battle with a bunch of Sentinels. One thing fans really hope from the McU’s X-Men is that they’ll wear their classic outfits, particularly Wolverine, and that’s exactly what Pastrana’s delivered in his artwork. It appears that he’s based Logan and Scott Summers’ costumes on John Cassaday’s designs from the Astonishing X-Men comics, while Storm seems to be sporting her 80s-style mohawk.

With the rights having reverted to them after Disney’s Fox buyout, Marvel Studios will soon be rebooting the X-Men within the McU. Kevin Feige confirmed as much during the Phase 4 announcement at July’s Comic-Con. However, it’s still early stages so all we’ve got to go on right now are rumors and reports about what Marvel might do with the mutants currently in their care. The latest intel though points to the studio turning to an old collaborator to relaunch the franchise.
According to CosmicBookNews, who’ve been supplied the info by scoopster Mikey Sutton, Joss Whedon is being eyed to helm the McU’s X-Men reboot. Whedon hasn’t worked with the studio since 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, but this rumor says that Marvel’s considering the writer/director for the all-important project. Easy to forget now, but for a period in the early 1980′s to early 1990′s you could forget The Avengers, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Cap, it was all about Wolverine and the X-Men. You had Byrne and Claremont’s groundbreaking run, then Claremont with a fistful of top artists like Jim Lee. Seemingly the Sun could never set on Professor X and his students. But it did, and we had many years of convoluted continuity, the invention of new but lacklustre mutants, the ‘no more mutants’ moment and more. Sure there were a few bright spots. When it comes to the world of superhero movies, few voices ring with more authority than Joss Whedon. So when he approves of something, you know that it has to be on the level. After all, he did direct the first two Avengers movies: bringing the genre into the 21st century by making team-ups, crossovers and shared universes the gold standard of the day. His five-year run on Astonishing X-Men was legendary, whose plot was partially co-opted into the third X-Men movie. He lampooned the genre with the infectious Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and is set to direct Warner Bros’

1.4 eXit Strategy
There are certain tropes that are nearly universal in every effective X-Men story. The good ones are always full of soapy non-mutant backstories, melodramatic romance subplots, and visually interesting applications of powers. The longer The Gifted goes on, the more confident I am that the folks making it think the same things. This week's episode, eXit strategy, hit all four to great effect.
First and foremost, this was an action episode. The whole plot centred on breaking up a convoy carrying Reed Strucker and Polaris to a Sentinel Services black site to rescue them. We also got a look into Eclipse's background, and his history with a cartel boss's daughter; and follow...

Hello again, and welcome to the recently resurrected Panel Discussion. I’m Kieran, and every week I’m going to go through some of the best comics of the week to give you an idea what you should pick up that you might have missed. This is another stacked week with some fantastic first issues and great jumping on points for books you might be behind on, so let’s take a look at what’s on offer.
Image Comics runs away with this week with three stunning new debuts proving why it is still the place to go for independently published comics. The big release this week is Moonstruck #1 by Grace Ellis and Shae Beagle which starts out as a slice of life comic featuring monsters that turns into something very different indeed. There’s werewolves, centaurs and a massive conspiracy getting in the way of everything, but it’s still charming,...

The most fearsome villain in the entire galaxy returns for an all-new series! Yes, this June prepare for Darth Vader #1 – the all-new ongoing series from superstar writer Charles Soule (Poe Dameron, Astonishing X-Men) who teams with chartbusting artist Giuseppe Camuncoli (Amazing Spider-Man) to chronicle the epic rise of one of the greatest villains in all of fiction!

Having lost everything that he once held dear, the one who was prophesized to bring balance to the Force instead chose a darker path. After years of putting the X-Men comic books on the backburner, Marvel has finally moved the spotlight back to the mutant superheroes. Among the many new titles being launched is Astonishing X-Men from writer Charles Soule and artist Jim Cheung, though the latter will only be sticking around for one issue.
That’s because Marvel’s big idea here is to have someone new join Soule each issue, with the likes of Aco, Phil Noto, Greg Land, Ramon Rosanas and Ron Garney all being lined up for subsequent instalments. What’s even more exciting though is we now know that fans can expect to see the return of Amahl Farouk, Aka the Shadow King.
If you watch Legion, you’ll already be familiar with the X-Men villain, and Soule has promised that we can expect big things from him in this series.
“He’s this incredibly ancient force of darkness – kind of a dream demon.

By now, you’ve undoubtedly noticed that this spring has borne generous fruit when it comes to new titles featuring your favorite mutants. But while books such as X-Men Gold, X-Men Blue and the upcoming Astonishing X-Men feature somewhat familiar lineups, those looking for a change of pace – as well as some young blood – need look no further than Generation X.
If anything, Marvel hasn’t been shy when it comes to playing the nostalgia card of late, and if there’s one character in this series that can fit the nostalgia bill, it’s that of Jubilee. These days, younger fans may know her as the girl who’s unfortunately been mostly relegated to deleted scenes in a number of movies, but those of us who’ve been around a little longer will remember how...

When it came time for Marvel to realize the full potential of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with 2012’s “The Avengers,” they couldn’t have chosen a better director than Joss Whedon. Whedon’s deep knowledge of comic book storylines — he had previously helped Marvel launch their “Astonishing X-Men” series and had successfully turned “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” into a minor institution at Dark Horse Comics — gave the studio the street cred needed to reassure fans that the ambitious crossover event was in good hands.

To Marvel Entertainment,
Last week I read X-Men Gold #1 and, controversy aside which I won’t be getting into as you have gone above and beyond to address the issue properly and professionally, it really invoked a lot of strong feelings in me. Because of that, I’d like to talk about the X-Men and what they mean to me.
I first discovered X-Men on television when I was in elementary school. I remember watching the first episode and immediately being sucked in. To this day, the Sentinels are still menacing to me and I’ll always have a fondness for Jubilee, Rogue and Storm. I remember the time between Saturday morning after the episode finished to the next Saturday felt like an eternity. I was a shy kid who knew he was queer, but I didn’t understand it. I didn’t have a lot of friends, didn’t...

It’s a good time to be an X-Men fan. In the wake of last week’s X-Men: Prime, Marc Guggenheim takes point as he launches X-Men Gold. This is the new flagship book of the X-Men franchise, and it kicks off in fine style.
Kitty Pryde delivers a speech. The X-Men play baseball. Logan (well, okay, Old Man Logan) gets sentimental, then tries to hide it. Guggenheim fully understands that X-Men fans are a nostalgic bunch, and he’s more than happy to give us the nostalgia buzz we’ve been long for. What pleases me, though, is that Guggenheim doesn’t simply channel Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men run (as I’d feared after reading X-Men: Prime). Instead, he shows familiarity with the whole X-Men franchise, with subtle nods to so many different eras.

It’s time for a new beginning. The last year’s been a difficult one for the X-Men; in the aftermath of Secret Wars, the mutant race was locked in a battle for survival against the Inhumans. All that finally came to a head in Inhumans vs. X-Men, a miniseries that drew a line under this period – and set the groundwork for something new.
So we move to X-Men: Prime, a one-shot that sets the stage for the X-Men’s next era. The issue united a number of key architects in the next wave of X-Men books; Marc Guggenheim, Greg Pak and Cullen Bunn as writers; Ken Lashley, Ibraim Robertson, Leonard Kirk and Guillermo Ortego as artists. It serves a simple purpose: to establish the bare-bones of the new status quo, essentially serving as an advertisement for everything that’s coming. The good news? It’s a tremendous success.

Although there will certainly be no shortage of titles featuring your favorite mutants over the next few months, one in particular that’s especially eye-catching is that of Astonishing X-Men. We could probably chat all day about why it’s so appealing, whether it be due to paying homage to the lauded book once penned by Joss Whedon or the fact that a “familiar menace has once again reared its ugly head – reborn, renewed and resurrected.”
Personally, I think the lineup of characters can sell the book on its own: Old Man Logan, Archangel, Mystique, Rogue, Gambit, Bishop, Psylocke and Fantomex. Seriously, how can anybody who had any measure of exposure to the X-Men during the 1990’s not be the slightest bit intrigued by that crew?
Perhaps that’s something writer Charles Soule is aware of, even subconsciously, but it sounds like he put together his own personal dream team,...

It really does feel like we’re at the dawn of a mutant renaissance, doesn’t it? Now that Inhumans vs. X-Men is behind us, Marvel is ready to take the world by storm with a veritable arsenal of ambitious X-Men titles, and has dropped a new trailer in celebration of ResurrXion.

Said books include: X-Men Gold, X-Men Blue, Generation X, Weapon X, Iceman, Jean Grey, Cable, Old Man Logan, All-New Wolverine and Astonishing X-Men.
From what we can tell, this family of periodicals will have something for everybody. Whether it be a grizzled Logan battling a deranged Hulk in Old Man Logan, the original team lineup coming together in X-Men Blue or a very 1990s-centric group that...

Just days ago, Marvel posted a teaser image online depicting a new group led by Old Man Logan with the rest of the members blacked out as if they were mystery partners joining him in a Survivor Series-style tag team match. According to Heroic Hollywood, the X-Men: Apocalypse sequel is going to redo "The Dark Phoenix Saga." Brett Ratner took a crack at that (and the cure subplot from Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men run) in X-Men: The Last Stand and dropped the ball in a major way, and seeing as it was Bryan Singer who set the stage for that at the end of X2, you can understand why he's keen to put his own stamp on that. Is it too soon though? After all, we're only going to meet Sophie Turner's Jean Grey for the first time next month, but who the hell cares? Seeing this iconic storyline done properly - especially if it takes us into outer spacer and really does the comic book justice - would be nothing short of epic, and it's unlikely they'd retread old ground by killing Jean again so that wouldn't be a major concern.

This March Marvel celebrate his 75th Anniversary and the legacy of what it means to be Captain America with the oversized Captain America: Sam Wilson #7, a giant 80 page issue commemorating the past, present and future of the Sentinel of Liberty from a bevy of Marvel creators including Nick Spencer, Greg Rucka, Tim Sale, Joss Whedon and Daniel Acuna, Mike Perkins and John Cassaday.
First, blockbuster creators Nick Spencer and Daniel Acuna bring you a cataclysmic tie-in to Avengers: Standoff! Since World War II, someone has always been there to don the red, white and blue and wield the shield. When Steve Rogers fell, his brother in arms, Bucky Barnes picked it up and carried the weight. When it was his time to rest, Sam Wilson would take up the mantle. But now, amidst the chaos and the carnage, Steve will be asked to pick up the shield once more.

As many of you already know, Joss Whedon worked with Marvel Comics writing a run of Astonishing X-Men that brought Colossus back and introduced several other X-Men characters. He’s done a good amount of work for the company in past, and now he’s coming back to write another comic for them to celebrate Captain America’s 75th anniversary.
ComicBook.com confirmed with Marvel that Whedon will be re-teaming with John Cassaday, who worked with the writer on reviving Astonishing X-Men. The report gives the following information:
Appearing in Captain America: Sam Wilson #7, the two will tell an all-new story celebrating the legacy and legend of Captain America. The issue will also feature a main story from series creative team Nick Spencer & Daniel Acuna, and another backup by Greg Rucka & Mike Perkins.

The other day at a comic shop I saw a flier for the upcoming Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat! #1. It was advertised having writer Kate Leth and artist Brittney Williams attached. I think it’s great that the two of them are on this book, as I enjoy the work they’ve put out over at Boom! Studios. However, it did start getting me thinking about the direction the comic industry is going. A direction that it may not want to go in.
We’ve seen the big two added more books with a woman lead. This has been great. A lot of them have at least one woman creator attached as well. We should absolutely be thrilled by that and support those efforts.
Just off the top of my head I can think of Amy Reeder on Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Kelly Sue Deconnick’s recent Captain Marvel run,...

As many of you may know, last week was the release of Batgirl #45, the issue in which Barbara’s former roommate/good friend Alysia Yeoh gets married to her lover, Jo. The resulting wedding was the first time in mainstream comics that a transgender woman got married. Googling this will lead you to a slew of articles and blog posts covering the groundbreaking nature of this issue. How important is this event though, and will this have any impact on mainstream comics? I picked up a copy so I could try to figure that out.
Like many a comic book wedding before it, it’s a filler issue. It’s about Batgirl at this wedding. This is an important point. It’s about Batgirl. It’s not primarily about Alysia and Jo. They’re the B plot of the issue. With the way the wedding has been hyped this past week,...

Whether you're a complete newbie or if the very words “Joss Whedon” make you do the Dance of Joy, the biography Joss Whedon: Geek King of the Universe, by Amy Pascale, is an excellent, fascinating, almost comprehensive read.
It's written in such a way that even if you know nothing about Joss Whedon or his work, it's nevertheless completely accessible, since the context is always explained. It's the fascinating, in-depth story of the progression of the life and career of a creative person, and the impact that has on the others around them.
However, even if you're an avid watcher of Joss Whedon's shows, and have a Giles-like knowledge of his work, there will still be anecdotes that you haven't read before, and those that you have already read will be contextualised organically within the development of his various stories. The book does an excellent job of this,...

Star Wars #7
Written by Jason Aaron
Art by Simone Bianchi
Colors by Justin Ponsor
Published by Marvel Comics
After the stunning revelation last issue that the loveable rogue Han Solo is a married man, Star Wars #7 takes a break from the ongoing storyline to tell a flashback story from Obi Wan Kenobi’s journal that Luke Skywalker discovered in issue six. Obi Wan Kenobi is one of the few characters to link both the prequel and original trilogy and has been played by two of the greatest actors of their respective generations. So his comic should be filled with insights into one of the last survivors of the Jedi era, some hooded lightsaber fights, and Sand People?
Unfortunately, this isn’t the case. Most of the comic is taken up with Obi Wan’s inner monologue, which is predominantly whining until the end when he bumps into a young Luke.
