A chilling end to Friend of the Devil
safenoe28 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I only watched Friend of the Devil (this review relates to parts 1 and 2) recently, and after the news that DCI Banks got the ax and sadly will no longer be with us after five solid seasons. Seriously, how on earth could DCI Banks be axed after only 5 years? What will happens to the Leeds tourist trade? Anyway, the opening crime in this episode relates to a previous episode, and we see the murder from the chilling and cold opening scene from the Yorkshire Dales/Moors. Talking of chilling, Raquel Cassidy put in an incredible performance as Dr Elizabeth Waring.

Sadly, DC Kevin Templeton is written out of this episode in gruesome manner. It's a shame, as DCI Banks singled him out for distinction, which in TV-land is quite foreboding if you know what I mean.

One feature of DCI Banks is the juxtaposition of Leeds and the Yorkshire dales, and each episode is atmospheric with the dark clouds and winds.

Good Episode but Some Pretty Shoddy Police Work
Hitchcoc8 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This episode shows what happens when there is a fox guarding the henhouse. We are made privy from the start that the forensic pathologist at the station morgue is a murderer. She is a complex character and Banks is taken with her (what else is new). A young detective is working off the clock in the area where the rape/murder took place. While there, our pathologist, face covered with a scarf, attacks him from behind, cutting his throat with a surgical knife. Later, she finds him in the morgue and realizes she hasn't killed a rapist but rather a colleague. She is stunned and attempts to cover her crime and divert attention by compromising the wound with a saw. But nothing is simple. Because the rapist is still out there and it is not she, there are other leads to follow. The conclusion is an example of some pretty careless apprehension of a suspect.

Friend of the Devil: Part 2
Prismark1026 February 2021
DCI Banks is reeling as one of his officers has been murdered. He had his throat cut.

Dr Elizabeth Waring got it badly wrong as she assumed he was an attacker. The perils of being a vigilante.

There was some cod psychology used by Banks to weedle out the killer of Hayley Daniels.

DS Annie Cabbot looked like she had to mine her own past trauma to get to Dr Waring. Cabbot found out that Waring was once brutally attacked and left permanently damaged.

There was a bonkers element about it all. It was a tad convenient for that detective to turn up from Scarborough. It was shoddy for Waring to mess around with the wound on the dead detective. She would had known photos would have been taken at the crime scene.
