Animated horror films are few and far between, but occasionally someone gets a great idea for one – see Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust - that makes us remember the genre can be more than just Alvin And the Chipmunks Meet whichever movie monster happens to need a paycheck at the time. It’s too early to say whether Malevolent is going to be one of those diamonds in the rough – but initial information about the pic is promising.
Today, we’ve learned that Homeland actress Morena Baccarin has signed on to lend her voice to the lead villain in the film. Malevolent centers on a “young woman (Dani Lennon) who must defeat her powerful, evil father in order to save herself and her siblings.” It was scripted by Jim Cirile and Tanya C. Klein (Liberator), and directed by Jason Axinn (Bite Me).

Liberator takes a gritty, realistic approach to the superhero movie, setting the story in the real world as opposed to a fictional city, with the media and political forces of the day very much a factor. In fact, the story eerily echoes current headlines -- Ferrigno’s character is a former government operative turned whistle-blower. It’s a challenging, mature role, and Ferrigno puts in the performance of his life, winning the Best Actor award from Cinerockom Film Festival 2013. In addition, Liberator snagged nine other awards during its festival run, including Best Short Film from Cinerockom and CalShorts, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress (Peta Wilson) from Cinerockom, Award of Excellence from IndieFest and Best Digital Comic Book from New Media Film Festival, along with numerous nominations (including Best Action Short from Action on Film.) The Kickstarter-funded Liberator drew huge buzz during screenings at festivals and comic conventions this year,...

An assortment of comics from a publisher I haven’t previously been aware of can be a promising sign occasionally. The rest of the time there’s usually a pretty good reason I didn’t know they existed.
Fame: Neil Gaiman is an illustrated biography of Gaiman, fantasy writer and easily-googleable man. It’s hard to picture exactly why this comic exists: full of factoids that seem to the result of a quick scour of his Wikipedia page (did you know Gaiman’s been on the Colbert Report?) and a thick, sketchy art style that I could only get on with when it was aping the characters from Gaiman’s work – though to Gerratana’s credit he does a fine Princess Mononoke – it seems like the kind of book handed out to young kids at a library and is something of a stodgy read. The cover’s lovely, though.

There aren’t a lot of modern indie movies that feature women in lead roles kicking ass. I mean, there are a handful of major Hollywood films out there — “Haywire,” the “Underworld” franchise, and most movies starring Maggie Q or Milla Jovovich immediately spring to mind — but young girls who are into action flicks currently don’t have a lot of female heroes at their disposal. When you look at the indie film scene, the well is practically dry. And while there are some women kicking copious amounts of ass in independent cinema, they are truly few and far between. In my humble opinion, that’s a damn shame. One lady who’s out there doing her thing is Tara Cardinal. She gets a lot of press here at Beyond Hollywood, and that’s all because she’s trying to make things happen. In addition to teaming up with Lou Ferrigno...

When last seen around these parts, fiery haired actress Tara Cardinal was doing her superhero thang alongside Lou Ferrigno in Liberator. But now she's going back in time for a whole different brand of heroics in The Legend of the Red Reaper...and guess what — she's bringing Uwe Boll along for the ride!
Written and directed by Kristen Barron Stewart, Red Reaper is an action-packed tale filled with witches, demons, war and romance — in other words, everything that makes the world of fantasy go round.
Cardinal stars as the titular Reaper, a warrior born of a witch and destined to save mankind from the return of the exiled demon horde. (No, not the Tea Party. That battle has already been fought and won.) Also appearing are David Mackey, Eliza Swenson, Christian Boeving, Shayne Leighton and Troma founder, eminent bon vivant and madman Lloyd Kaufman.
Red Reaper has been Cardinal's passion project for years.

Bad guys beware. There's a brand-new superhero in town. He's called the Liberator and he's played by Lou Ferrigno, a guy with more than a little experience in the realm of comic book heroes.
Liberator is the story of Ed Migliocetti (Ferrigno), an ex-pro football player who gave up his career to join the military. After being drafted into the "Enhanced Abilities Initiative," Ed was dubbed the Liberator and teamed with a group of fellow "supers" known as Sidewinder, Gaia and Volt. Though he soon found himself doing the government's dirty work — assassinations, regime changes, infrastructure sabotage — Ed followed orders. He was a good soldier.
But when a mission went bad, Ed was set up as the fall guy and sent to prison as a traitor. After a decade behind bars, Ed is released and determined to set the record straight. But his efforts aren't appreciated by those who threw him under the bus.

You know, I don’t want to be friends with someone who simply cannot get excited about a short film starring Lou Ferrigno, Don “The Dragon” Wilson, and Ed Asner. In fact, I refuse to believe that such a human being actually exists. If you haven’t seen the full trailer for writer/director Aaron Pope’s “Liberator” here’s a perfect opportunity to correct this problem. The solution resides in the space provided below. Everything you need to know about the picture is contained in the aforementioned clip, so I’ll forgo the usual plot synopsis. Strange, I know. “Liberator”, which also stars Peta Wilson, Michael Dorn, and Tara Cardinal, will debut at the Holly Shorts Film Festival in Hollywood, California on August 11th, 2012. On your way out, swing by the official Facebook page. If you desire info, then that’s the place to be...

Known best to comic book fans for portraying The Incredible Hulk in the CBS television series of the same name from 1978 to 1982, Lou Ferrigno was kind enough to recently take the time to answer my questions about his latest projects. Having made a name for himself as a professional bodybuilder, Ferrigno would go on to star as Hercules in the 1983 film and later took on memorable comedic turns (playing himself) in the likes of The King of Queens and I Love You, Man. At the moment, the actor can be seen in short film Liberator (in which he once again takes on a heroic role) as well as voicing the Hulk in Joss Whedon's upcoming superhero ensemble, Marvel's The Avengers. He's also starring in NBC's Celebrity Apprentice, Sundays 9/8c. How exactly did you become involved with Liberator? I got a phone call from Jim Cirile and he told me...

As part of Deadline's runup to the Oscars, they've been interviewing the nominees. When they sat down with Beginners Christopher Plummer, they talked about his choice of roles, and how he enjoyed making this film, his first gay role. "I found it a touching little film, and funny, and I had the most wonderful fun making it. I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed making a film so much as this. Maybe I should always play gay people."
In Germany, a 15-year-old girl discovered her parents were swingers after finding a video of them at a club on the TV channel's Rtl website. The parents sued, because while they were willingly interviewed for the piece, they were told their faces would be blurred, which the network forgot.
