There are quite a large number of 'Phineas and Ferb' episodes that had great story ideas, managing to follow the basic formula while doing more than enough to give it variety. "My Fair Goalie" is one of them. It's actually one of the more unique and creative ones, which is amazing for a sport depicted so often in animation. Loved it when it first aired during an up and down period for me, and have re-watched it a number of times since as that's how positive an impression it made on me.
"My Fair Goalie" is a fantastic episode of 'Phineas and Ferb' and nearly one of my favourites of the show. Made fantastic by an ingeniously done main plot, one that sounds standard on paper but felt fresh. But also brought down by one strand not being as strong. A strand usually done very well and in some cases works better than the main plot. As said, "My Fair Goalie" is still one of those "loved it" episodes, just not quite one of the special oes and there are a good deal of special ones out there.
A lot to love here in "My Fair Goalie". It is excellently animated. Vibrantly coloured and the backgrounds has lovely attention to detail, plus it is visually quite ambitious for 'Phineas and Ferb' at this point of the show's run. The music is dynamic with the action and the theme song is insanely catchy with very clever and quotable lyrics that anybody still in school fishing for how to spend their vacation will relate to. "Football X-7" is also great fun.
It's exceptionally well written as well. The target audience is clear and there is something for kids and adults alike. The writing is smart and mature, while not being too complicated for younger audiences. While with enough complexity emotionally to not be simplistic for older viewers, Candace's subplot could have been too soapy but turned out to be relatable. Loved Ferb's illuminating development. The idea was a good one and the story is imaginatively done, have not seen a soccer world this inventively used in a while, and while a lot goes on it doesn't get over-complicated.
Found nothing wrong with the characters, Buford being quite dumb here actually turned out to be amusing and not as stupid as it could have been. Football X-7 is an ingenious creation and one of the boys' finest. As said, Ferb's development illuminates.
Only the Perry and Doofenschmirtz subplot disappoints slightly. It has its good points, with great physical interaction and some nice lines but rather over-familiar and slow going, also not terribly inspired.
Summing up, fantastic. 9/10.
