Sensitive journey to Cape Verd.
nunogil4529 November 2022
A poetic journey of a director that loses her best friend and decides to create a piece that translate her lost, her mourning, her beauty. Mangifera expresses a load of meanings and capture images, music and bodies of Cape Verd, with a sensitive and powerful photography. This experience travels through fiction and reality, with a natural balance and connection between life and dead. A truthful and honest homage to the important cape verdean cultural activist Samira Pereira, a women that developed a cohesive multidisciplinary artistic fabric in the Cape Verdean community, bringing artists together and gathering conditions for work. A strong and solid debut for the young director Flávia Gusmão.

Sensitive, Generous, Powerful

Witnessing this attempt of honouring a friend through a piece of art was an incredibly powerful experience. Everything about the film is beautiful: The colours, the landscapes, the music, the testimonies of each person who appears in the film, and the generosity and love with which they speak of this character we don't see but who becomes so real - Samira.

Everything is done tastefully and without ever falling into self-pity.

We see an artist, a woman, a friend, opening her heart and allowing herself to be vulnerable before the viewers, perhaps in an attempt to find answers or some peace in this loss.

It is truly surprising that this is the first film directed by Flávia Gusmão. I already knew and was a great admirer of her work as an actress and creator, now I can't wait to see her next film.
