I started following Auntie Z last spring after she posted a hilarious video about a margarita on TikTok/Instagram. I have fallen in love with her story of starting in comedy in her 40's just a few years ago. I have also followed her social media and she makes me laugh out loud with her jokes, humor, and warmth yet searing digs at American culture. This special was filled with her hot takes, and me, a 31 year old gay white man in Chicago, and stand-up comedy enthusiast, loved hearing a new story being told by an under-represented group in comedy. There was something in this special for everyone, that we can all relate to (The bucket joke gets me every time, and I have never been able to order KFC since because I'll just die laughing). Given this is her first special, I'd love to see another one...with some improvements. I think she desperately needs to be coached and directed by someone other than herself. There were moments where some of the punchlines and jokes felt a forced, and could have been riotously hilarious if she'd have just said the joke like a normal sentence. Some of the material wanders on but doesn't tell a story, could use some re-writing to help with continuity and flow. At some points the pacing was a little slow and I got bored. The ending didn't feel like an uplifting one or send a clear message that is in alignment with her social media inspiration (she talks about following your dreams on Instagram, but in her special it's all about being a doctor, engineer, etc) which actually works against her authenticity--her authenticity is why I love her work. Overall it's poignant, and a great first run, not too shabby. I look forward to seeing her continue to grow and write bigger, better material. I am giving Auntie Z an 8 so she'll be inspired to go for that perfect 10 on the next one! She can absolutely do it.
