Jorja Smith announced a new project, Be Right Back, out May 14th. The singer previewed the eight-track set with “Gone,” an electro-soul single built on a watery piano loop and glitchy drums. In the video edited by Smith and Ivor Alice and shot by Erin Corrian-Alexis, the singer takes a nighttime stroll as she reflects on loss.
“My God, I lost you at the corner / On God, I lost you in the moment,” Smith sings on the track, a soothing and somewhat ambiguous expression of regret. “Why now and not a little later?...

“American Idol” fans want a do-over. Just minutes after Cuban-American performer Yurisbel received a golden ticket to Hollywood based solely on his personality, not his voice — something Katy Perry suggested they may later “regret” — the judges decided to send home gifted singer-songwriter Ace Stiles.
Ace, one of the long-running reality TV show’s first-ever transgender contestants, sang his original song “Addicted,” which is “not about drugs because I’m only 16 and that’s illegal” (watch above). Katy and Luke Bryan told the “introverted” high school student that he wasn’t quite ready for Hollywood, while Lionel Richie threw him a pity vote to let him know they still “believe” in him. Tears in his eyes, Ace left the stage and wrapped his arms around his supportive mother.

Things have been pretty quiet on the movie front for a while, given the pandemic, but this weekend marks a major upswing in content for cinema lovers, with multiple brand new releases available. Judd Apatow’s The King of Staten Island is unfortunately not up for streaming at present, but Netflix Original Da 5 Bloods, the latest effort from the Oscar-winning Spike Lee, is. For family audiences, there’s also Artemis Fowl over on Disney Plus, which was originally set for a theatrical release back in May.
Even outside of these new films though, there’s plenty of fresh titles coming to the various streaming services this weekend, from classic movies, recent hits, new TV series, old TV series, etc. Whatever combination of services you’re subscribed to, you can fill your whole weekend watching what’s coming to Netflix, Disney Plus, Amazon, HBO Max and the rest over the next few days.

One of the most defining moments of Avicii’s too-brief career came at the 2012 Ultra Music Festival, when Madonna appeared on stage to introduce him and their first collaboration, “Girl Gone Wild.” That the queen of pop acknowledged the then-22-year-old Tim Bergling — who died Friday at the age of 28 of undisclosed causes — as a peer and a collaborator wasn’t just a watershed moment for him, it was one for dance music as well.
But actually, a more telling moment in the Swedish superstar’s career came a year later, at Ultra in 2013, when he unveiled his new bluegrass-meets-electronic sound for the first time. Avicii opened his set with his signature hit, “Levels,” a blockbuster track that altered the face of Edm when it was first played at Ultra in 2011. But immediately afterward, Aloe Blacc took the stage to perform “Wake Me Up,” released just days earlier, live for the first time.

But immediately afterward, Aloe Blacc took the stage to perform “Wake Me Up,” released just days earlier, live for the first time.

Audiences may already be looking ahead to Avengers: Infinity War, but this weekend could feature an interesting battle among the top three. While we're expecting A Quiet Place to return to the weekend's #1 spot, the race could be a little closer should Rampage hold on better than expected or if Amy Schumer's new comedy I Feel Pretty outperforms expectations. The weekend also sees the release of Fox Searchlight's Super Troopers 2 and Lionsgate's release of Traffik into a moderate number of locations. Beginning with A Quiet Place, the horror/thriller has already brought in nearly $110 million and is poised to top recent horror hits Split and The Conjuring. With Paramount adding another 219 locations for a total of 3,808 theaters, we're anticipating a 36% drop and a three-day right around $21 million. Come the end of the weekend the film should top $130 million domestically. Look for Dwayne Johnson's Rampage to...

Pleasant enough, if not paper-thin and featherweight, The Perfect Match is a bland picture starring attractive people that never quite seems to connect the dots. The romance at the core of the story is between Charlie (Terrence Jenkins), an agent with an incredible home, and Eva (Cassie Ventura, perhaps best known as R&B singer Cassie who had a hit single Me & U a few years ago), a gorgeous women of little substance — although we learn she does like House of Cards. At one point in their friends with benefits arrangement, director Billie Woodruff (Honey, Addicted) makes his point with a montage scored to current radio hit Player by Tinashe, in one of the many moments that feel a little too on the nose.
With an uneven ensemble, The Perfect Match attempts to add context to Charlie’s life: his sister Sherry (Paula Patton) is conveniently a therapist who offers...

10 Cloverfield Lane is the latest mystery box thriller from J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot and it's looking to top a list of four new wide releases this weekend. Additional new releases include Sacha Baron Cohen's comedy The Brothers Grimsby, the new faith-based feature The Young Messiah and the romantic-comedy The Perfect Match. All four will be competing with some strong holdovers, most notably Disney's Zootopia, which will be holding on to the top spot for a second week in a row, and Deadpool, which could top $10 million in its fifth weekend in release. Zootopia enters its second weekend in release after breaking the The Lorax's March opening weekend record for an animated film. As such, it seems appropriate to use The Lorax's 44.7% second weekend drop as a basis for comparison this weekend. On a daily basis Zootopia has performed well when compared to The Lorax, suggesting the smart money...

Jesse Malin sees a lot of ghosts on the once-bohemian streets of New York’s East Village: late icons, all neighborhood regulars, like Allen Ginsberg, Joey Ramone and Lou Reed. Malin, a local fixture who has just released the powerful street-wise-rock album New York Before the War, also sees a lot of possibility amid the boutique hotels and velvet-rope clubs now lining the Bowery.

“Addicted” steamed up the box office this weekend — taking in another $3.4 million for a per location average of $3,279. That was enough to push its 10-day domestic total to $12.7 million — more than double its $5 million production budget. Despite the low-budget erotic thriller's success, director Bille Woodruff tells TheWrap, the film almost didn't get made. “It was very difficult to find an actress who was willing to do everything that was required for the film and to be fearless, because she has to have sex with three guys,” he said. The hunks of Addicted may have looked confident on screen in their birthday suits, but William Levy, Tyson Beckford and Boris Kodjoe all had concerns about stripping down. The actors talk about the preparation for the intimate scenes including Tyson oiling up his behind to avoid the ashy look, and director Billie Woodruff reveals one of the actors needed a special extra large wardrobe piece to cover up.

Chicago – The stylings of author Zane, who has dominated the best seller list and pay cable networks for several years with her steamy and sensually oriented stories, gets to the big screen with the recently released “Addicted.” Actors Boris Kodjoe and Tyson Beckford are part of the ensemble cast.
“Addicted” is the story of Zoe (Sharon Leal), whose life seems perfect with her husband Jason (Boris Kodjoe) and three children. There is something missing from her life, however, and she begins a series of affairs with other men. This leads to an addiction with the thrill of the hunt and capture, and the number of conquests puts her on a dangerous path that could cost Zoe her husband, family and perhaps her life.

Who won at the box office this weekend? Sure, "Gone Girl" earned the most money -- an estimated $26.8 million -- but several other movies could also plausibly claim victory and bragging rights by different measures of success. Overall, this was a good weekend for nearly every new film and many holdovers, with the total box office up 30 percent from the same weekend last year (and that was when "Captain Phillips" opened and "Gravity" was in its second weekend). And, like last weekend, the plenty-to-go-around results suggest that the long slump of summer and early fall is finally over.
So, which movie enjoyed the strongest performance this weekend? Here are the contenders:
"Gone Girl." Not only did the movie remain on top for a second weekend, holding off all newcomers, but it did so with better numbers than anyone expected. Its estimated $26.8 million is a good $2 or $3 million more than the...

Despite heavy promotion and promises of epic adventure, Dracula Untold (estimated $23.5 million) took a back seat to more subtle fare as Gone Girl (estimated $26.8 million) took the first-place spot once more. Not to say Dracula Untold will be a failure…accounting for worldwide box office, it has achieved $86.1 million and already bested its $70 million budget…but it has proven unpopular with critics and has a long fight to make itself profitable domestically. On the other hand, third-place finisher Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day has little to fear, with an estimated $19.1 million already a good start to its $28 million costs, as well as mildly positive critical praise giving it a leg up.
Annabelle went last week without providing budget numbers, but if it had cost as much as The Conjuring it would be doing pretty well. However, in a stunning reveal, the horror film cost less...

A Dirty Shame: Woodruff’s Erotic Fiction Adaptation Flatlines
Demurely arriving before the anticipated film version of E.L. James’ erotic fiction nonsense Fifty Shades of Grey comes the first adaptation of Zane’s 2001 novel, Addicted. Having had well over a decade to build her fan base, it’s surprising that it has taken so long for such a reality to transpire, though marketing for the title has been curiously slim considering Bille Woodruff is at the helm. Distributed by Lionsgate boutique division Codeblack, the film wasn’t screened for critics, which isn’t generally a vote of confidence. While those who know and appreciate Zane’s work, including a fan base that would appear to be mostly made up of heterosexual black women, will be curious to experience Woodruff’s film version, the only point it proves is that silliness knows no racial bounds.

Gone Girl remains at the top of the box office, scoring $26.8 million in its second weekend, dropping only 29% as the domestic total for the R-rated adult drama grows to $78.2 million. Coming in second is the first of the weekend's several new releases, Universal's Dracula Untold, which actually did quite well scoring $23.4 million in its first three days and an "A-" CinemaScore from opening day audiences. I don't know who showed up and who was asked, but they clearly didn't see the same movie I saw. Universal, however, is now calling it a $70 million budgeted film instead of the $100 million that was originally reported... that will help the bottom line. New releases continue in third with Disney's Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day bringing in $19.1 million to go along with its "A-" CinemaScore and I expect this one will stick around for some time, not to mention...

Awkwardly toggling back and forth between soft-core prurience and public service announcement-style seriousness, Addicted clearly wants to have its cake and eat it too, preferably while naked. Based on the novel by best-selling erotica author Zane, the film unfortunately depicts black female sexuality, a topic rarely portrayed onscreen, with all the depth and subtlety of a late night Cinemax offering. That probably won't deter its female target audience, especially since its three ridiculously handsome, chiseled male leads spend much of their screen time in various states of undress. Sharon Leal plays the central role of Zoe, a

With its story of a married woman led astray into an affair by her sex addiction, “Addicted” doesn't fail because it wants to provide steamy, soapy melodrama to a mainstream audience; its faults are a function of its judgment, not of its genre. Adapting the work of the best-selling author Zane (aka Kristina Roberts), director Bille Woodruff (“Honey,” “Beauty Shop”) is trapped by Christina Welsh and Ernie Barbarash's script. The material swings between the sensual and the puritanical with whiplash-inducing speed; the dialogue all too often has the flat, dead sound of a first draft. Also read: ‘Nymphomaniac, Vols.

Robert Downey Jr., Dracula, and a cute, unlucky family have all come out to challenge Gone Girl and Annabelle's box office reign this weekend. David Fincher's popular psychological thriller could hold down the top spot for the second weekend in a row, with that demon doll close behind, but it's going to be a tight race with The Judge, Dracula Untold, and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. The adultery thriller Addicted also opens in around 800 locations, and there's a slew of great limited release choices debuting too, including the buzzy Sundance sensation Whiplash.
