Can I interest you in a horror movie about Jesus? How about a horror movie about Jesus ... starring Nicolas Cage? The new movie "The Carpenter's Son" will be just that — a horror pic inspired by the unknown childhood years of Jesus H. Christ himself. For those of you not very schooled in a little book called The Bible, just know that after Jesus' birth is recounted, almost nothing is known about his childhood. The traditional story traditionally jump-cuts to his adult years when he's starting out his ministry. However, there are unofficial, uncanonical texts that recount Jesus' youth, including the apocryphal gospel the Infancy Gospel of Thomas. This apocryphal gospel will be the basis for "The Carpenter's Son," which hails from director Lotfy Nathan.
According to Deadline, Cage will play the Carpenter, aka Joseph, Jesus' adoptive father. Jesus' mother, Mary, will be played by FKA twigs, and Big J himself,...

“Shōgun” is looking to become the next “Game of Thrones” Emmy sensation thanks to its similar awe-inspiring world-building combined with political machinations and stunning performances. The FX series adapts James Clavell‘s 1975 historical novel of the same name. The story follows an English sailor (Cosmo Jarvis) who ends up shipwrecked in Japan while Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) uncovers secrets that could benefit him in the political wars to come as he tries to rule one of the five Regents in Japan.
Husband and wife duo Rachel Kondo and “Top Gun: Maverick” story writer Justin Marks oversee this spectacular mini-series, which is a comprehensive, historical study that transcends world-building to present compelling characters. The expansive cast all deliver career-best work while Kondo and Marks handle each plot thread smartly and expertly.
Here’s just a sampling of the rave reviews.

So far in the history of “killer bear” cinema, only Grizzly Park opens with an excerpt from The Bible. As “The Children Destroyed by Bears” goes (without getting too deep into other interpretations), a pair of bears mauled many kiddos after they insulted God’s prophet. The absurdity of such a tale would naturally lead to a movie just as, if not more inane. However, who or what exactly is pulling the strings in Tom Skull’s one and only directed feature is not so clear, at first. Is this fuzzy destroyer acting of its own free will, being manipulated by a human, or is there really an omnipotent force meting out bizarre retribution for naughty youths? In a movie as oddball as Grizzly Park, not a single one of those notions would be considered unsuitable.

From Rainn Wilson’s desire to start a spiritual revolution in Hollywood and beyond to Hilary Swank’s latest film “Ordinary Angels,” and a first look at the Amazon Prime Video series “The Baxters” the Variety Spirituality in Entertainment Breakfast, presented by Faith & Media Initiative, explored representations of faith and spirituality throughout media. Tuesday’s event, held at the Los Angeles London hotel, featured five in-depth conversations that dove into varied perspectives on the role of spirituality in entertainment and how industry leaders find inspiration from meditation to a whale’s song.

BAFTA-winning designer Sam Barlow has teased his next two games – one in the vein of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and the other a “very cool” sci-fi horror.
British designer Sam Barlow keeps challenging the conventions of videogames with each project he makes. Known in the 2000s as the creative mind behind Silent Hill: Origins and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, he later broke out as an indie developer with the terrific Her Story, Telling Lies and Immortality. Those all used live-action footage and cunning user interfaces to create some truly absorbing interactive thrillers; the latter rightly won a BAFTA for its narrative in 2023.
Since then, Barlow’s been quietly working on two follow-up titles, which have recently been given teasing entries on Steam. The first, currently dubbed Project C, doesn’t give away much – there are some atmospheric graphics of a woman’s eye and what appear to be red clouds or smoke,...

As the rap sound continues to make waves across the globe - often far from the Black communities that birthed it - a young artist is emerging in the international scene, who is using the genre as a platform to speak up for her community. J Noa, a 17-year-old Dominicana from the San Cristóbal region, was recently signed to Sony Music Entertainment. Calling herself "La Hija del Rap," she's rising in the scene as an artist with a style that is reminiscent of the genre's rebellious beginnings, all while adding her own fresh take, her native Spanish language, and authentic flow to the mix.
"With me being young, people are often like, 'Wow, her with that age, she's already with Sony?'" she tells Popsugar during an interview, reflecting on navigating the industry as a young teen. "But also because of my age and because I'm a girl, people don't take me into account,...

According to TMZ, the rapper, who has been surrounded by controversy in recent months after making a series of antisemitic comments, held a private ceremony with Bianca Censori to celebrate their love.
However, the publication stated that it doesn’t appear that West and Censori have filed a marriage certificate to make it legal, despite the musician being seen wearing a ring on that finger.
Censori, who recently switched up her look to go from brunette to blonde, is thought to have worked as an architectural designer at Yeezy for a few years.

Mark Burnett, chairman of MGM’s Worldwide Television Group, has left the studio, IndieWire has confirmed.
Burnett announced the news to staff in an internal memo, which IndieWire has obtained and can be read below.
The news comes months after Amazon officially acquired MGM in an 8.5 billion deal finalized this March. With Burnett leaving, MGM’s television and film arms will be without a head, as Michael DeLuca and Pam Abdy left the company a month after the acquisition was confirmed.
Burnett has been with MGM Television for eight years, when he was named president of MGM Television. He was named chairman in 2018. Under his direction, MGM Television vastly expanded its output by acquiring production companies like Evolution Media, which develops shows in the “Real Housewives Franchise,” and Big Fish Entertainment.

Mark Burnett has formally resigned from his top leadership role at MGM, a move that comes 10 months after Amazon closed its 8.5 billion acquisition of the studio.
Burnett’s departure from the MGM fold is not a surprise. The producer, known for enduring unscripted hits including CBS’ “Survivor,” NBC’s “The Voice” and ABC’s “Shark Tank,” has not served as a conventional TV executive during his nine years with MGM and was not expected to stick around after the sale.
Moreover, as a significant equity holder in MGM, Burnett profited handsomely from the Amazon deal. In the nine years since he first sold his One Three Media production banner to MGM, Burnett has reaped an estimated 900 million.
In a memo to MGM staffers, Burnett said he intended to pursue new ventures as a producer. He also emphasized that he worked hard to ensure that MGM TV’s roughly 150 staffers were...

Mark Burnett, MGM’s head of worldwide television group chairman, is leaving the company following the studio’s acquisition by Amazon.
The executive and reality producer said he was stepping away from MGM TV’s “day to day management” and returning to “independently creating and innovating” and plans to continue to oversee his legacy programs.
Burnett becomes the latest high-ranking MGM executive to exit following the retail giant/streamer’s 8.5 billion deal to acquire the studio behind franchises including James Bond, Rocky/Creed and The Handmaid’s Tale. Motion picture group chairman Michael De Luca and motion picture group president Pam Abdy also exited their roles April 27.

Jules Dassin’s powerful picture was a hit in Europe but remained mostly obscure here, despite featuring the great Melina Mercouri and a score of Continental stars. Adapted by two blacklistees in exile it doesn’t try to hide its revolutionary aims — Nikos Kazantzakis’s uncompromised storyline places The Church as a main obstruction to social progress, justice, and life & liberty. It’s no wonder it wasn’t ‘movie of the week’ in 1957. It’s been beautifully remastered at its original CinemaScope width, uncut.

If you’re looking for some family-friendly, faith-based viewing, the options out there can seem lacking. Popular streaming platforms offer countless shallow and inappropriate options, or productions that take a mocking approach to religion, but where are the Christian ones that you don’t have to think about twice before viewing with the kids?
Luckily for you, there are a number of great options at your disposal, you just need to know where to find them. That’s why we’re here to help – we’ve done the sifting for you. We’ve compiled a list of four of the best Christian TV series to watch now, three dramas and one docudrama. This What We Do in the Shadows season 2 review contains no spoilers.
FX’s horror comedy mockumentary series What We Do in the Shadows season 2 rises from the crypt to present classic-style comedy worthy of the ancients yet not entirely at odds with the modern world. Staten Island’s favorite vampires – Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), Laszlo (Matt Berry) and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) – continue to make a mess of their community, tradition, monster standing, and genre. Their human familiar, Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) continues to mop up mortal and immortal remains.
These aren’t the scariest vampires in the tri-state area. They’re not even the scariest bloodsuckers in a three-block radius of the house they share. One of the best things about What We Do in the Shadows is how it presents the dangers to the vampires. Most shows and movies about the thirsty undead make them out to be the threat.

MGM Television is expanding its international unscripted division with the hire of The Bible showrunner Richard Bedser.
Bedser joins the company, based out of London, as Evp of Factual Series, Documentaries and Specials, reporting to MGM’s President of Unscripted & Alternative Television and Orion Television, Barry Poznick.
This comes after Bedser’s All3Media-backed scripted producer Two Halves Pictures closed at the end of last year.
MGM Television planted its flag in the sand in the UK in November with the hire of former Channel 4 exec Dom Bird.
Prior to launching Two Halves Pictures, Bedser worked closely with Mark Burnett, MGM’s Worldwide Television Chairman and Roma Downey as showrunner on History’s The Bible miniseries and NBC’s A.D. He also exec produced their feature film Son of God,
Bedser spent five years as the Managing and Creative Director of Burnett and Downey’s LightWorkers Media, based out of London.

Another month, another smattering of new Netflix titles to sift through. And it seems the online streamer is kicking off 2020 with a host of juicy horror movies and TV shows.
First thing’s first: there’s a number of big-name titles leaving the service next month, including Panic Room, Grease, American Pyscho, and the Spartacus series. That’s disappointing, to be sure, but among the January 2020 titles are news installments of Grace and Frankie and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, along with all three Lord of the Rings movies and the Kill Bill films. And it doesn’t stop there.
We’ve compiled the full list below, but a special mention must go to two particularly exciting horror additions: Sam Raimi classic The Evil Dead and Tremors.

Timur Bekmambetov is leaning in heavily on what he calls ScreenLife storytelling, a disruptive format which eschews traditional cameras for methods that visually drive the narrative through stories that unfold from the Pov of smartphone and computer screens, where most of us now spend the bulk of our waking hours.
Microsoft and Bekmambetov’s Russia-based Studio Bazelevs have 50 projects percolating in ScreenLife format. It just set a deal to establish a ScreenLife-platform based on Microsoft technologies and will create a joint laboratory for the production of films in Russia. The son of a serial killer breaks good on Fox's cop procedural twist Prodigal Son.

This Prodigal Son review contains no spoilers. The pilot is available to stream on YouTube through Sunday, September 15.
"There is no such thing as monsters," young Malcolm Bright is assured by his serial killer father early in the pilot of Fox's new twist on the police procedural Prodigal Son. This serves as the central dichotomy of the premise: being told by a monster they don't exist. Monsters don't want to get caught and they'll say anything to justify their continued freedom. Who could be better at catching these creatures than someone who was raised by one? Possibly no one, and probably anyone.
Malcolm, played by The Walking Dead's Tom Payne, grew up to be a psychologist, forensic profiler, and all around "acquired taste," according to NYPD Detective Gil Arroyo, played by Lou Diamond Phillips,...

Mark Russell takes on Green Lantern's deadliest foe in Sinestro: Year of the Villain.
Mark Russell would seem like an odd choice to write a Sinestro comic. Before he started writing the shockingly terrific Wonder Twins in the mainstream Dcu; before the critical darlings that were Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles or The Flintstones; even before the too-beautiful-for-its-time Prez, Russell got his start in comics when Top Shelf picked up a book that grew out of his party trick, where he would sarcastically retell books of The Bible off the top of his head. He and Shannon Wheeler turned it into God Is Disappointed In You, and while it's a ways off from his new project - Sinestro: Year of the Villain #1 - it's less different than you might think.

Duane Chapman’s (aka Dog the Bounty Hunter) Colorado store was robbed on Thursday. The robbery comes less than one month after the death of Beth Chapman, Dog’s wife and TV co-star.
“The official Dog and Beth merchandise store was robbed on Thursday. Not only did the thieves take thousands of dollars of clothing, these criminals took priceless personal belongings of our beloved Beth, including tributes to her kindly left by our amazing fans. We are working with our friends in law enforcement to find these perpetrators, and are offering a cash reward to anyone who provides information about their identity. To who ever did this, you better watch out. Dog is coming for you,” a family spokesperson said in a statement.

A Look Back: Murnau’s ‘Faust’A fun evening with friends including my friend Christa Lang Fuller, who introduced me to the 96 year old former actress Noreen Nash, (see blog) not too long ago. Christa hosted an evening with Justin from the Academy Museum, from next door and French American producer Martine Melloul and me to watch the vintage film ‘Faust’.
Christa is my age, German born, and was a young actress in Paris when she met the director Sam Fuller. At 23 she married him and eventually they left Paris for the U.S. They had a daughter, Samantha and she has a daughter, Samia. Sam died in 1997 and so the three women live in a beautiful warm and welcoming home on Woodrow Wilson Drive.

This summer marks multiple 50th anniversary spin-offs of 1969 cultural watersheds, from the first moon landing (Neon’s hit documentary “Apollo 11”) and the Manson family murders (Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) to concert event “Woodstock.”
In the middle of 1969, Dennis Hopper’s “Easy Rider” opened in New York at one theater, ahead of a slow rollout (most of the country did not play the film until September). Now, on the anniversary of the premiere, Fathom Events is bringing it back to over 400 theaters for limited shows on Sunday and next Wednesday.
Decades later, “Easy Rider” is not remembered so much as a great movie–although it did break out Jack Nicholson as a movie star– but more as a shocking commercial success that shook Hollywood’s timbers. The studio reaction to “Easy Rider” changed the industry forever.
Here’s how “Easy Rider” turned into a pivotal Hollywood moment.

"The Bible is a moving target." Abramorama has debuted the official trailer for a new documentary titled American Heretics: The Politics of the Gospel, which looks like an inspiring watch despite the sound of it from that title. The doc film takes audiences right into the buckle of Bible belt where a group of defiant ministers, congregations, and community leaders are challenging deeply rooted fundamentalist Christian doctrine in favor of a Gospel of Inclusion. Labeled as "heretics" for their beliefs and actions, they refuse to wield their faith as a sword sharpened by literal interpretations of the Bible. Especially those fundamentalist dangerous Christian interpretations that continue to justify nationalism and hack away at landmark civil rights protections for women, minorities, immigrants, and Lgbtq communities. This seems like a sincere doc about good people fighting to make a real difference in society today, while still maintaining their faith. Here's the official...

Lucifer's first girlfriend re-enters his life, and Linda and Amenadiel prepare for the changes their angel baby will have on their lives.
This Lucifer review contains spoilers.
Lucifer Season 4 Episode 4
“Maybe you read about it in a little book called The Bible.”
No matter how much any of us want Chloe and Lucifer to end up together, it’s virtually impossible to dislike the childlike exuberance of the Bible’s first woman as she re-enters Lucifer’s life after a few thousand year absence. And while Chloe struggles to rebuild her personal and professional lives after the falling out with her partner, “All About Eve” provides a delightfully introspective glimpse into the circumstances behind Eve’s departure from Heaven and her desire to party on Earth with her ex.
Inbar Lavi (Imposters) takes on the iconic biblical temptress and plays Eve with a lovely sense of naivete completely out of place in contemporary Los Angeles.

I hear that Cru has departed the company less than six months after he was promoted to president. He joined the business, which was formerly known as Grb Entertainment in July 2018 after spending 15 years working for Mark Burnett’s production company, most recently as Executive Vice President, International for United Artist Media.
It’s not clear exactly for what Cru will do next, which Gary R. Benz, founder and CEO of Grb, told Deadline that he was leaving for a bigger role.
Benz told Deadline, “When Scott left Grb Studios he told me he was heading to work for a larger company. We appreciate his time here and wish him great luck in his new endeavors. Grb Studios will be attending Miptv next week with a full sales team, and announcing a new international co-production.

Penny Lane's documentary on The Satanic Temple focuses on political theater not dark arts.

The Satanic Temple is the Merry Pranksters of this generation. His group of elastically iconoclastic faithless may not believe in Satan, but are deeply committed to all his works and pomps, as Michael Corleone attests to in The Godfather. Before the game-changing Black Panther, visual effects supervisor Geoffrey Baumann had worked on a number of Marvel projects, supervising computer graphics and second unit work before earning his current title in this domain. A BAFTA nominee this year, shortlisted by AMPAs as well for Best Visual Effects, Baumann had one mandate from director Ryan Coogler, when it came to his first blockbuster: Above all else, Black Panthershould hold true to Africa.
Based on a superhero character first appearing in comics in 1966, Black Panther (or T’Challa) was a king-to-be, a rising force in the invisible and technologically advanced African kingdom of Wakanda, whose domain would be like none seen before in the McU. Between Wakanda, the Golden City at its center, and the otherworldly metal it possessed, allowing for superhuman feats of engineering, Baumann knew he had enormous challenges ahead of him, with the role he played in bringing this world to life.

The former manager of The Beatles' Apple Records in America, Ken Mansfield, saw the band at both final concerts.
On a chilly January 30, 1969, afternoon, the Beatles, who played their first concerts at The Cavern's lunchtime shows and last concert on August 29th, 1966, at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park, stepped onto the roof of their London headquarters at 3 Savile Row to shoot the ending for their last film. Bassist Paul McCartney, long a proponent for keeping music live, was the first to hit the roof and kept warm by jumping on the planks to be sure they'd hold the equipment. Drummer Ringo Starr noted his set was "nailed down in the wrong place," and slipped into his wife Maureen Starkey's red raincoat. Rhythm guitarist John Lennon fretted his "hands were too cold to play the chords,”and wrapped himself in Yoko Ono's fur coat.

Italy’s state broadcaster Rai is leading the way in the country’s international TV boom.
Though pay-tv Sky Italia and Netflix are churning out some edgier Italian shows for the international marketplace, the bold Italian pubcaster is now riding high after making a splash at the Venice Film Festival with the world premiere of HBO/Rai’s powerful female friendship saga “My Brilliant Friend,” based on the first of Elena Ferrante’s globally best-selling novels.
Next up are its buzzed-about “The Name of the Rose” series, starring John Turturro, and the third season of Frank Spotnitz’s hit “Medici” saga, currently shooting in Italy.

Warning: This post contains major spoilers from The Handmaid’s Tale‘s Season 2 finale.
“I wasn’t expecting the finger thing.”
Yvonne Strahovski is talking with TVLine about one of Serena’s lowest moments in The Handmaid’s Tale‘s Season 2 finale. After reading The Bible aloud before a panel of male leaders to emphasize that girls should be taught to read, Mrs. Waterford is hauled away — with her husband’s blessing — and receives Gilead’s punishment for women who read: the loss of a finger.
“That was surprising to me, a very pleasant surprise,” she adds, then realizes what she’s said and laughs.

James Mangold is the latest director to speak out about toxic fandom. The director is well accustomed to dealing with impassioned fan groups as the director of “Logan,” but he’s warning movie lovers that visionary filmmakers will stop accepting the gig to make Hollywood tentpoles if angry fans continue to attack and harass.
Mangold took to his Twitter page (via io9) to address the industry: “At the point when writing and directing big franchises has become the emotionally loaded equivalent of writing a new chapter of The Bible (with the probable danger of being stoned and called a blasphemer), then a lot of bolder minds are gonna leave these films to hacks and corporate boards.”
Extreme fan culture has been a major talking point ever since “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” star Kelly Marie Tran deleted her Instagram posts in June after facing months of online harassment with fans who hated her character,...

James Mangold, the director of Logan and the upcoming Boba Fett film has some interesting thoughts on the consequences of extreme fan backlash, like with what is happening with Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It's been disheartening to see how some fans/trolls have lashed out in their hate and anger. It's like they let the dark side take hold of them and some of them are acting like the very villain that they complain about... Kylo Ren. You know, with his childish fits of rage.
James Mangold believes that this kind of behavior from fans could lead to hacks and corporate boards directing movies in the future. And when someone replied saying that was already the case, Mangold responded saying that directors like Rian Johnson and Christopher McQuarrie are not 'owned" and says that they actually fight our battles behind the scenes.
I know some fans will roll their eyes at Mangold's comments,...

There’s a lot of talk online lately about the negative discourse of a vocal minority of Star Wars fans. This isn’t a new thing, sadly – The Phantom Menace‘s Ahmed Best recently revealed that he suffered severe depression due to the hatred of Jar-Jar Binks – but it seems to have increased as of late in the wake of controversial movies like The Last Jedi and Solo. In response to this, director James Mangold has taken to Twitter to comment that this...

Mark Burnett took the reins of MGM Television and Digital just in time to steer the independent television studio through the choppy waters of digital disruption. Good thing he’s not a traditional studio executive.
“We’re in an interesting equilateral triangle right now,” Burnett says of the changing business landscape for content producers. “We’re going down a road where all the studios will soon be dealing directly with consumers.”
The silo effect of such global platforms as Netflix and Amazon buying up worldwide rights and increasingly producing shows in-house will make it harder for studios the size of MGM TV to prosper with high-end content. The upside is limited when a studio doesn’t have the ability to sell a show in markets around the world.
This is a big part of the reason MGM shelled out $1 billion last year to buy out its partners, Viacom and Lionsgate,...

Billy Eichner is reuniting with his former Street gang for a new animated series at FX.
The artist formerly known as Billy on the Street is developing Time Travelin’ Jerk, our sister site Deadline reports. The potential series is described as Back to the Future meets Groundhog Day, and would chronicle the story of Ashley, a millennial who gets stuck time traveling — and hates every minute of it. Eichner would voice male lead Parker, an “awkwardly sweet” accountant who joins Ashley on her time-hopping adventures.

Michelle Monaghan has joined the upcoming Netflix series “Messiah” in a lead role, Variety has confirmed.
The 10-episode series chronicles the world’s reaction to a man (Mehdi Dehbi) who emerges from the Middle East creating a groundswell of followers who claim he is sent from God. Other people question whether he is what they say he is or rather a dangerous fraud bent on dismantling the world’s geopolitical order, causing civil havoc as he beguiles the world’s media and its audience. The series is told from multiple viewpoints, including a Us Intelligence agent, a Palestinian refugee, an Israeli Shin Bet officer, and a Latino preacher and his daughter.
Monaghan will play Eva Geller, a highly specialized Us intelligence officer who pits her wits and years of experience against Al-Masih (Dehbi). The character is described as whip smart, tenacious and determined to prove she is right, Eva literally...
