This week on Operation Kino, we're embarking on a pretty ill-fated affair, as we review Joe Wright's gorgeous new movie Anna Karenina. From there we bring you the newest installment of OpKino Indie, in which Da7e chats with Chris Cullari, Jennifer Raite and Carolyn Jania, the team behind the new short film "The Sleepover," which recently won the Cabin in the Woods/Lionsgate/Vimeo contest. (You can also watch the short at the bottom of this post!) Before any of that, though, there's a lightning round inspired by Joe Wright's career, plus tidbits, in which David loses his legs for Rust and Bone, Patches actually tells you to see Brea king Dawn Part 2, Da7e fills us in on the madness of American Horror Story, and Katey evangelizes for the podcast-listening app Downcast. We end, as always, with your lightning round answers for dessert. Take a listen...

The Sleepover is a six minute tale from Chris Cullari about a local slasher and a pair of neighbor kids whove come together for a sleepover. This horror short may be insanely brief but Cullari effectively stacks up the tautness and establishes a fine outline of the films few focal characters. The scares are tangible and the shock is palpable.

I've got another great twisted horror short film to share with you called The Sleepover. It was created by Chris Cullari, who explains that it's "a proof-of-concept for a feature film about a town living "between the sequels" of its infamous masked killer. Here's a short plot summary...
The town of Derry has a secret, but no one told the new kid. It's gonna be a long night.
The short is the winner of the Cabin in the Woods/Lionsgate short film contest, and there's a reason it won. It turned out really freakin' good, and it would be cool to see the universe explored more in a feature film. It's got a fun twist you should enjoy.
A big thanks to Chris for sending this our way! Head on over to their Facebook page to keep yourself updated! Watch the short and let us know what you think!

Hot off a streak of festival screenings (including Fantastic Fest) that culminated in the winning of Lionsgate and Vimeo's Cabin In The Woods short film competition, Chris Cullari's satirical stab at the residential routines of movie serial killer communities, The Sleepover, is now available online in all its bloody and funny glory.Conceived as a proof-of-concept for a feature, the five-minute short economically establishes a set of fun ideas that betray a larger scope. I'm particularly reminded of some of the ideas Scott Glosserman ruminated on in Q&As for his terrific Behind the Mask: Rise of Leslie Vernon, when considering where he would take a sequel (I recall his vision at the time was of a '21 Jump Street for Final Girls"), so I'm pretty excited...

Yes, I'm tremendously picky when it comes to featuring short films here at ShockTillYouDrop.com, but The Sleepover was something I caught while at Fantastic Fest and I've been waiting to share it with you.
In fact, this short came in second (as a "runner-up") at Fantastic Fest under the short horror film category. (Full disclosure: I served on the jury in this category with two colleagues from FEARnet and Fangoria.)
The Sleepover is a proof of concept piece, meaning the filmmaker, Chris Cullari, is using it to tout a feature film he'd like to see come to fruition. The story concerns a town living "between the sequels" of its infamous masked killer.

I was a judge at this past September's Fantastic Fest, tackling the horror shorts and in a sea of a lot of gross-out films, the witty The Sleepover really stood out. In the vein of Scream and Behind The Mask, The Sleepover exists in a universe in which slashers are real, and families and babysitters alike know exactly how to deal. Well, everyone except for the new kid in town.
Directed by Chris Cullari from a script by Cullari & Jennifer Raite, you can see The Sleepover right here. For more on the film, head to its official Facebook.

Subtitled "Severe Fantastic Shorts," this section of programming really did pack a punch. Whether you like gross-out special effects (making me really glad I didn't eat during this) or lyrical, emotional short films that demand your attention in a completely different way, "Short Fuse" had something for everyone.
At the Formal/Dir: Andrew Kavanagh/Australia
Though not my favorite of the bunch, I really enjoyed how this no-dialogue short mixed traditions in a way that viscerally represented a high school prom. Very tongue-in-cheek and a great ending, this was a perfect start — and clearly the jury thought so, as this was the winner of the "Short Fuse" program at the Fantastic Fest awards.
Game/Dir: Josh MacDonald/Canada
What appears to be a typical hillbilly slasher short, but with a funny shape-shifting twist. I found the acting in this one lacking, particularly at the end. However, the story is solid and really enjoyable,...

Fantastic Fest is almost at its end, which means it’s of course time for the one and only Fantastic Awards!
Now I could waste your time for a few paragraphs on the apparent ridiculousness of holding an Award Ceremony at the half-way point of a festival, but instead I’m going to save my tirades for more important matters, and just assume that Festival Organizers worldwide know what they’re doing. What I Will give you though is a list of this years Award Winners!
As you look through the list of winners, you may want to take note of a few key films and add them to your “To Screen” list. One of them is Adrian Garcia Bogliano’s homage to 70’s horror film’s Here Comes The Devil, which became the first film in Fantastic Fest history to completely Sweep the Horror Features...
