Are You In A Broadway Show Yet?
LynxMatthews24 April 2023
If you've ever gone to a callback for someone's misbegotten idea for an off- (x5) Broadway show, done your absolute best, and still been treated like dog-doo by the arrogant creators, this show is for you.

Essentially a love letter to the kids still out there trying to make a go in the modern world of musical theatre, this sweetly old-fashioned short-form show follows the titular Sami as she tries to book something more than an uncouth YouTube spot.

Delightful B'way cameos, winning supporting cast, no big message, some gorgeous songs that should be snapped up for future auditions and open mics, and one last reunion of Bruce Kimmel and the late Cindy Williams. I'm here for it, as the kids say.

Absolutely Delightful!

"Sami" is a new short-format series from Bruce Kimmel that's a throwback to the "single woman on her own" type shows like "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" or "That Girl." Unlike those shows, "Sami" is a musical show with at least one song in every episode. Every song is a winner, every episode is a winner, and Sami Staitman as Sami Sherman is a winner, as well. The scripts by Mr. Kimmel are sweet and very well written. And most of the guest stars are real Broadway talent! The other regular actors are Karim Hazime as Sami's BFF, Kerry O'Malley as Sami's mother, and in her last project, the late great Cindy Williams as Sami's grandmother. I thoroughly enjoyed this entire season, and can't wait for season two!

I LOVE SAMI!

This show was so much fun! All the Broadway stars in cameos was so much fun to see and there's a lot of them! The episodes are all so funny and I binged the entire series in just about 2 hours. The look and feel of this show brought me right back to my childhood and the love I had for those '70's sitcoms I watched every Friday night. The girl who plays Sami is absolutely adorable and what a voice! She's a a natural comedian! She reminds me of Marlo Thomas from That Girl and a young Reese Witherspoon. Her best friend Sammy is so like-able and sweet! Cindy Williams is too funny in this as her Grandma and her Mom is perfectly cast as well. The songs were fantastic and I absolutely loved them all! What a unique series this is - I just wish there was more to watch! I was surprised to read that most of the songs were recorded live - wow! Thanks for all the fun! It was a hoot!

An Earful and Eyeful Delight

How gratifying it is to finally be able to watch this series after hearing so many promising things about it. It's worth every moment, and its ten episodes made a great binge watch this morning.

Everyone in the show, from the leads to every last cameo, are a revelation - as is the pacing and music and all that good stuff, thanks to writer/director Bruce Kimmel and music director Richard Allen.

Special mention must be made of the incredible privilege it is to watch the great Cindy Williams in what, sadly, became her last appearance. Her comic genius is perfection, which beautifully evokes her early brilliant work with Kimmel in his films "The First Nudie Musical" and "The Creature Wasn't Nice", and in their TV appearances. RIP, dear lady.

If you love classic TV situational comedy and/or just love musicals of all stripes, SAMI is for you. I will personally be back for more, and I can't recommend the series enough. Now, bring on Season Two!

'Simply' Irresistible
johngriffin092815 May 2023
The charismatic Sami Staitman stars in this series as Sami Sherman, a would-be actress doing her best to make it in New York. (If she can make it there ... oops, wrong song, wrong show.) Her life unfolds in a way that feels like an updated version of That Girl. It's sweet, but not saccharine. Nor is it too innocent, as Sami's hilarious YouTube commercial attests. But finding success isn't going to happen overnight, not when some of the roles she auditions for are of hilarious dubious quality (think of it: a musical version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). Offering support along the way are her best friend, Sammy (Karim Hazime), her mother (Kerry O'Malley) and her grandmother (the great Cindy Williams in her final role).

In each episode, we're treated to just how gifted Staitman/Sherman can be, usually in the form of a song written by series creator and writer Bruce Kimmel. Along the way, she gets to perform with and for some stage greats like Karen Ziemba and Brad Oscar. My favorite song from the 10 winning episodes was Staitman by herself giving her all to a beautiful ballad called "Simply." Irresistible. Your choice could vary as strong arguments could be made for "Annie," O'Malley's over-the-top "I'm-on-a-Diet Blues" and Williams' hilarious "I Married a Schnook."

Their combined efforts and Kimmel's witty scripts make Sami a sure-fire winner. I'm looking forward to season 2.

A throwback to the Golden Era of sitcoms
singdaw-2879124 April 2023
This sweet and funny series is a love letter to theater and musical comedy, as well as the sitcoms of the Golden Era of television. The songs are funny and wistful, the characters endearing, and - there's even a pie fight! Amazing performances all around, from the amazing star, Sami Staitman, through to a very touching final screen performance by comic legend Cindy Williams. If you are a New York theater aficionado, you'll be kept busy with all the indsider-y cameos. With wonderful performances, music, and laughs, what's not to love? The ten episodes clock in at just over 2 hours. Don't miss it!

Memorable for the wrong reason
Eighty-Days18 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
For the last two weeks (as I write this), every time I see the Youtube ad where a woman (animated, thank goodness) is sitting on the toilet straining to "go," (it's a commercial for a laxative) I can't help but think of the "Man Mower" ad from the first episode of this show. Probably not what the script writer envisioned when he had Sami do a self-tape for this men's grooming product as a satirical look at this growing Youtube trend to do tasteless commercials for "intimate" products.

Sami is a young woman in New York striving to make it in musical theatre, and while waiting for her big break she does temp jobs, etc. A story that could be told of practically every actor in New York.

As far as the actors are concerned - they do a great job with what they're given. No criticism there. Sami Straitman is a delight as Sami Sherman and each episode showcases her talents.

It's just too bad that apart from the musical numbers, the actors aren't given much to do. At least, not much to do that's fresh.

Since each episode is only ten minutes long, it's perhaps not fair to criticize the characters for being stereotypical - they are what viewers would expect when you don't have any time to set up unique characterizations: the supportive BFF, the supportive mother, the supportive but nagging grandmother (are you dating? Are you in a play yet? Ya da ya da).

The BFF's a singer and an actor too, the mother, being a woman, is of course obsessed with her weight (easy laughs) and feisty grandma disses her husband to his granddaughter and sings a song about him being a schnook (easy laughs.) In real life grandmas dissing grandgads generally have miserable lives living with someone they dislike or disrepect. I've never found that kind of thing funny. Get a divorce and find someone who'll make you happy!

Some things are contrived for laughs. Sometimes they work (in fact the funniest line in the whole series, for me, comes in the first episode after Sami has performed a song in an audition. She's wearing pink. After she leaves, the director turns to someone sitting next to him and says, "That's a lot of pink." Doesn't sound like much when I explain it, but the delivery was so great - only time I actually laughed out loud.

The big fail, for me, was the pie "fight" in episode 2.

Sami is temping as a server at a party, stationed behind the dessert table. A man comes up and proceeds to call her stupid a couple of times, for no real reason. As in real life, young Sami is so shocked that she doesn't attempt to defend herself...but a woman she'd been talking to picks up a pie and hits the guy in the face.

Well done!

But it doesn't end there. The guy retaliates by hitting Sami's defender in the face with a pie, the woman throwing the party comes over to see what's going on and for some reason Sami's defender pushes a pie into *her* face, and then pies are pushed into the faces of a couple of innocent bystanders for no reason whatsoever.

Not funny.

Audition after audition, no callbacks, dates with new actors who are already succeeding and love to brag about it...Sami perseveres through it all - and at last her dedication is rewarded.

Well, comedies always have happy endings - as they should!

There were a few chuckles, some good songs, Sami and her BFF Sammy had good chemistry together...but the whole just didn't click for me.
