Zombie Blasters

This game is another one of my favorite video games of all time and one of my favorite light gun games. And of course, another childhood gem of mine; believe it or not at the time I wasn't totally into the 'light gun" genre because I wasn't that good of a shot at the time. Let alone "horror movies" and the "survival horror" genre. But this game was a surprise when I saw that you had the ability to blow away the monsters, to pretty much go all Rambo on them.

The game is sort of "Operation Wolf" doing "Resident Evil" (on a side note the "Resident Evil" franchise also had a few light gun shooters). It really was a unique light gun shooter for it's time as it was horror themed which wasn't common at the time, it sort of predates the game "Carnevil" and the "House of the Dead" franchise just as that game was about blasting zombies, mutants and monsters so is this.

Really nothing to the plotline except you're a "Ghostbusters" like team and your job is to blast away the beasts of the night. That's it in a nutshell like most light gun games you not in it for story you're in it for the action and it's got plenty of it.

The whole game is one crowded and gory shooting gallery. There are just zombies, mutants and monsters that are coming out toward you left, right, up and down with specific attack patterns in each level, it's almost impossible to clean out most of the level as they just keep popping up really quickly; which is a similar style in SNK's previous game "Mechanized Attack". But that's part of what makes the game, it really has just frantic, over the top, crazy action; despite the overwhelming odds against you, you honestly feel you can take them down.

There is plenty of ammo magazines that constantly comes down and is hidden in the levels, so you won't have to worry too much about low ammo if you hit the magazines. You also have grenades/explosives, there are different kinds that drop down and each have different functions, two of my favorites are the electro grenade as it produces a web of electric death. And the other the Rocket Powered Grenade which is awesome as it's the most powerful that can clear out the entire screen perfectly, pretty much instant death.

I really like the animation, from the levels of certain parts of the city that have a sort of an almost post-apocalyptic urban setting as everything is gritty, broken and run down. But what stands out are the animation of the monsters and gore, but also just the absurd tongue and cheek humor of the whole game.

The gore effects are cool it's not on the level of "Resident Evil" or "Splaterhouse" the gore effects here are more on a moderate/mild level but their effective all the same and if it, as you are blasting zombies and monsters you see them completely blow apart. It was a really cool effect because you saw just pieces of them split apart completely really fast in you face, it really felt almost like those blown monster parts were going to come straight at me and hit me in the face.

But I just really like the roster of monsters which is colorful, crazy, crazy. But what makes them really stand out is in their absurdist nature which makes the game kind of funny, these are things you just must see for yourself to believe.

You have all kinds of different zombies, you have the regular kind in the typical generic civilian clothing, but there are also football player zombies, construction workers, biker gangs, army man zombies and each of them are armed with guns, Uzis, grenades, rockets, knives and can even drive vehicles. Yeah you heard me right, these monsters can shoot right back which I'll admit is strange considering their zombies, only time I actually seen zombies use guns is the movie "Versus" and this game was years before that film.

I thought that was kind of cool and it increases their threat level as you see them actually fight back at you, instead of their clenched attack like in the movies where they simply charge at you, tackle you, and eat you alive. This added to the humor of the game as it turned that cliché on its head.

I even like the bosses whom are each colorful, you have a floating mutant eyeball that is protected by body parts you have to shoot though, a combat vehicle that is actually a living mutant, two Jason's armed with Uzi's, the list just goes on and is just more bizarre than the next.

So overall if you're into vintage light gun games or even survival horror games then this is one worth checking out, "Beast busters" is a busting blast.
