Independence is the kind of town where everyone is both a bit of a villain and yet a bit of a hero, too.
Some slide along the spectrum further in one direction or the other, but no one is a saint.
---
Nothing makes that point better than showing the audience how Major Bad Guy, Tom Davidson, has had a past with friends and crooked little dreams in his crooked little heart.
Tom Davidson with a breaking emotions as he has to take his best friend in for a "good death" of hanging, but can't bear to see him shot.
---
Eli, the plot catalyst in question, knows that even if he goes to Mexico, he'll never outrun the tracker Santiago who's after him.
Hoping against hope to get away with things one last time, instead of continuing on the run.
---
Loved also the amazing friendship dynamic between Calian and Augustus.
Augustus has one foot on either side of this battle of good and evil, but he still feels the loss of Calian sliding further away toward the "only" good side.
Calian, meanwhile, still loves his friend as a brother in arms and attempts to pull Augustus into the light simply by being present. By listening. By reassuring, but not in an overdone way.
---
The trio of Kate, Abby, and Hoyt are amazing as always. They handle comedy with deft timing and also "bring it" during the Sidestep drama with resulting gut punch.
Hoyt is both a clown and a hero, a bit worse for wear yet a stud.
Kate is the real lawman in town, balancing facts and finding out answers. Judging, but with a dose of kindness when handing down truth.
Abby almost killed us all this episode as she realized the perfect ghost husband she'd created might also be somehow mixed up in doing wrong.
---
Love, love, love that the plot really took it up a notch this episode. We now know these people and have some sense of the world in which they live.
Tonight the writers had the freedom to simply tell a story, knowing that all that was in place.
Great job all around.
