Bear is in the desolate, barren highlands coast, where British elite troops get 'Arctic training'. Vegetation is scarce and skinny, hence food rare, so he can't be picky and tucks into 'instant sushi' (biting a head off) after catching two small fish painstakingly by placing a found net in a stones-narrowed passage in a lake. A rotten seal carcass isn't edible, but the skin makes a single-use-tight wet-suit to cross a wide, icy bit of sea. Even walking proves perilous as stones and rocks give way suddenly. Shelter for the merciless elements is scanty, making best of a wrecked boat. Wading a bog proves exhausting, and after falling in he improvises 'snow shoes' for buoyancy by binding heather to his boots.
