Netflix streaming is upping the ante this December, adding enough high-profile TV shows and movies to more than make up for last month's lackluster offerings.
On the movie side, highlights include Will Ferrell and gang in "Anchorman 2," the Heath Ledger-starring "A Knight's Tale," Cameron Crowe classic "Almost Famous," Oscar-winning "American Beauty," and horror hits "Oculus" and "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones." Oh, and let's not forget '80s classic "Troop Beverly Hills," '90s cult favorite "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion," or Leonardo DiCaprio in "The Wolf of Wall Street."
And there's plenty to love about what's coming on the TV front: "American Horror Story: Coven" finally gets its day on Netflix, "Sharknado 2" storms its way to streaming, and Brit hit "Broadchurch" finally lands stateside. Oh, and December sees the premiere of the hotly anticipated Netflix Original series "Marco Polo" on the 12th.

Finding a person who powerfully fuels your creativity and passion can be a thought-provoking and intriguing challenge. That desire to find someone who undoubtedly accepts who you are is relatably presented through the life of the title character in writer-director Howard Goldberg’s new independent comedy-drama, ‘Four Squared.’ The film not only chronicles Jake’s determination to find a meaningful relationship and the purpose in his life, as portrayed by lead star Elias Koteas; it also also highlights supporting actress Virginia Madsen’s gripping working relationships with the actor and filmmaker, both of whom she has long-standing personal connections with off-screen. ‘Jake Squared’ follows the title character (Koteas), a 50-year-old film director who [ Read More ]

Multiplicity: Goldberg’s Latest a Mediocre Mash-up of the Masculinity Affliction
A handful of exquisite references are bound to crop up in a discussion of Howard Goldberg’s third directorial effort, Jake Squared, which proves to be the helmer’s first stint behind the camera since 1996 indie flick, Eden. However, Goldberg’s work doesn’t stand as an equal to a bevy of obvious influences utilized in the film, from any number of Woody Allen’s nebbish protagonists, to Fellini’s autobiographically inclined 8½. Abundant quotes flash across the screen from a series of additional notables, the least of which include Jean Cocteau and Groucho Marx. And yet, for all the inspired quirks, Goldberg’s material is never elevated beyond banal cliché, despite a cavalcade of names and an energetic lead performance.

More enervating than it is ambitious, Jake Squared is partly a romantic comedy and mostly a pseudo-philosophical apology for self-absorption.
Creatively blocked indie-filmmaker Jake Klein (Elias Koteas) examines his failings as a lover by making a film within the film, starring a younger, hornier version of himself (Mike Vogel). While Vogel's Jake flirts with every woman he meets, Koteas's Jake directly addresses Jake Squared's viewers through a series of fourth wall — demolishing speeches and aphorisms, including pompous quotations from Federico Fellini, DailyOm.com, and Sonny and Cher.
The film's meta-narrative spins out of control after three more versions of Jake, two played by Koteas, inexplicably appear, and f...

I have to say, I didn't exactly see an R-rating coming for Jean-Marc Vallee's Wild starring Reese Witherspoon. The only photos we've seen have featured Witherspoon with a backpack as the film tells the story of Cheryl Strayed and her 1,000-mile on the Pacific Crest Trail alone. Clearly there is more to this one than picking wild flowers. This week we also have R-ratings for Lynn Shelton's Laggies starring Keira Knightley and The Purge: Anarchy. I've included the complete bulletin directly below. Cantinflas Rated PG For thematic elements, language, smoking and some suggestive material. Jake Squared Rated R For language. Korengal Rated R For language throughout and brief nude images. Laggies Rated R For language, some sexual material and teen partying. Release Date: September 26, 2014 The Prince Rated R For violence, drug content and language. The Purge: Anarchy Rated R For strong disturbing violence, and for language. Release Date: July...

Sosie Bacon may only be 21, but she has a lot going for her. On top of being 2014's Miss Golden Globe, through her father Kevin Bacon, she is connected to nearly everyone in Hollywood - including every other previous Miss Golden Globe, most of whom are also the daughters (or sons) of industry power players. And while some have a connection through their famous parents, others, such as Laura Dern (who happens to have famous parents), are also connected through their own work. Don't believe us? Here's how you get from young Ms. Bacon to all of her famous predecessors,...

Take One Action, Edinburgh & Glasgow
Think globally and watch locally with this respected social action festival. There are big topics here, addressed through drama and documentary and invariably accompanied by panel discussions. A new "Sisters" strand puts women's stories to the fore but the opener, Fire In The Blood, takes a detailed look at Big Pharma and its control over medical drugs. Elsewhere, nuclear orthodoxy is challenged in Pandora's Promise, and other topics up for inspection include Russian politics, HIV and urbanisation.

The tourist-friendly Northumberland border town has found an ingenious way of attracting visitors: by turning the whole town into a "living cinema". New video artworks and site-specific installations have been commissioned for some of Berwick-upon-Tweed's celebrated landmarks.

WikiLeaks founder to judge films at the 21st Raindance Film Festival; 2013 line-up unveiled.Scroll down for full line-up of films
Julian Assange has joined the jury of the 21st Raindance Film Festival (Sept 25 - Oct 6), a London-based event that celebrates independent film in the UK and around the world.
The appointment is a controversial one. The Australian editor-in-chief and founder of WikiLeaks took refuge in the Ecuadorean embassy in London in June 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning about sexual assault allegations.
It is understood that he fears Sweden would extradite him to the Us, where he believes he is wanted in relation to WikiLeaks’ disclosure of a significant amount of classified Us military and diplomatic documents.
Commenting on Assange’s appointment, Raindance founder Elliot Grove said: “Every year Raindance invites interesting people to join our jury. In the past we have had musicians like Mick Jones, Marky Ramone and [link...

Born in Pennsylvania to a family with two grandfathers who fought in World War II, Mike Vogel now plays Army veteran Dale "Barbie" Barbara in CBS' Monday limited series "Under the Dome," based on the Stephen King novel of the same name.
Barbie is on a mission and has plenty of secrets and angst, but Vogel is a happily married father of three daughters. He also doesn't think much of actors opining on world issues.
"I grew up a plumber's son in Philadelphia," he tells Zap2it. "No one stuck a microphone in my dad's face, saying, 'What's your view on gun control?' But why would they care what I think? On paper, actors are the dumbest group of individuals essentially out there.
"Most of us have not gone to college. However, we never stop learning. Because of what we do, we're constantly researching, constantly learning. However, my opinion...

After an extensive casting process, Mike Vogel (Pan Am) has been tapped as the lead of Under The Dome, CBS’ 13-episode summer series from Steven Spielberg and Stephen King based on King’s bestselling 2009 novel. This represents one of the final castings on the series set in Chester’s Mill, a small New England town suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an enormous transparent dome. The town’s inhabitants must deal with surviving the post-apocalyptic conditions while searching for answers to what this barrier is, where it came from and if and when it will go away. Vogel will play Barbie, an Army veteran who is in Chester’s Mill on a mysterious mission. Vogel, repped by Wme and manager Geordie Frey, recently shot a major recurring arc on the upcoming A&E series Bates Motel as well as indies McCanick and Jake Squared.

Those who follow Darren Aronofsky on Twitter know he’s been rolling on Noah for a couple of weeks so far — I’d suggest those who don’t get his tweets fix that soon — yet a production of this nature is still bound to grow after things get underway. As a result, it’s not too surprising when Deadline reports that Madison Davenport (The Possession, Shameless) will be coming aboard his picture in the role of Na’el.
Biblical scripture tells us the woman — known, in elongated form, as Na’eltama’uk — was wife to Noah’s son, Ham, played here by Logan Lerman. Since a) Na’el is not typically seen as a major component of this story, and b) Davenport is being signed after just about everyone else, I take it the part is not major.
Noah stars Russell Crowe, Anthony Hopkins, Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson, Ray Winstone,...
