The entire project was conceived and shot as an Internet Webseries from October 2012-January 2013. In its early stages of post production, it was decided to scrap plans for the web series, expand on the story, and release the product as feature film.
Ansel Faraj has said this is the first in a new franchise trilogy that would connect various strands of the Hollinsworth Productions universe, as well as tell its own set of stories. This film includes the characters of Detective Adam Sera from Old Friends (2010), the magician Nikolas Winter from The Mystic Tales of Nikolas Winter (2012), and some of the Lovecraftian aliens featured in Hunters of the Dark (2011).
The project grew out of several unproduced projects that Ansel Faraj was attached to. The first of which was an alien mystery film in the style of The Twilight Zone (1959), which had been in development for a number of years before falling apart. The second film was a character mash-up parody titled simply "The Characters" - which included the characters of Adam Sera and Copycat from The Burning Within (2012), Natasha from Mr. Twistedface (2011), and Nikolas Winter, which fell apart shortly after the filming of Brother Drop Dead (2012). The third film was a superhero project about a character that was described as being "the Superman to Detective Adam Sera's Batman", which Nathan Wilson was attached to, before he and Ansel Faraj went on to make Doctor Mabuse (2013).
